Heyoka - The Spirit of Revelation 2-LP. Gatefold cover colored vinyl limited edition double album filled with incredible late 70s progressive hard rock from this unheralded Texas group. Mention the name Heyoka to any self respecting rock music aficionado in the state of Texas and chances are they remember this legendary 70s hard rock band. Without a doubt this band was one of the greatest unsigned bands ever to originate from Texas. Opening for every major touring act that passed through San Antonio, including Rush’s first tour of America, this band even had a song featured on MTV in the early 80’s, before it got unceremoniously banned. They featured two guitarists, a singer that played flute, keyboards, and a crack rhythm section. The music is reminiscent of Jethro Tull and Kansas, but retaining a unique quality all its own that will take the listener on a musical journey evoking Native American imagery under the mystical guide of Black Elk. All tracks recorded between the years 1977 and 1986, almost all previously unissued. For those into classic era Rush, Kansas, Jethro Tull, Thin Lizzy and the like. An absolute must-have release! Released on vinyl, this features excellent multi-layered guitar, ripping bass and drum work, and Ian Gillan inspired vocals with dark, haunting, somewhat blues-tinged hard rock songs. Recorded in Rosenberg, TX. only a single 45 rpm was released, but the tracks on the 7" were from a previous demo recording done in 1974. This and much more is featured on the CD version, where you can hear for yourself why the world should have heard of the name Ottis Coleman, but hopefully now they will get the chance. For fans of Trapeze, Deep Purple. -

This is the CD only follow up release to the first album by Hooker. These tracks were culled from the bands personal archives and were transferred from the original reels. The time frame spans a period of several years, from around 1978 to approx. 1986. Some of the tracks do feature on the first album, but are going to be alternate versions, mixes, etc. There are also a few live tracks, we concluded those would have been from around 1974 making them some of the oldest surviving recordings of the band. -
Soundboard 9.8 - Superb is how I would define this recording. If you have any interest in any of the musicians from Jefferson Starship and Jefferson Airplane than I highly recommend this one. This gig eventually led to the members deciding to go tour. Audience 8.8 - A tape that sounds like it has been extensively worked on to try to bring out the tones and reduce noise. It’s a very old recording that has been preserved as well as could be expected although I feel like it has more life in it. Either way, it’s clean enough, in almost a soundboard way as you don’t hear any atmosphere except between songs where, quite honestly, it sounds like there’s nobody in the “crowd”. Strange. Audience 8.4 - Technically speaking, there would be people that would argue with this rating but you have to account for ENERGY and VIBE and this recording bristles with swagger, sweat, and INTENSITY. -
Audience 8.7 - This recording is better than it has a right to be, after all it is in a big stadium, early 70’s so the gear, if it doesn’t weigh 80 pounds, has to be cheap crap…but, dang it this sounds cool! Granted, instrument separation isn’t great (it is good enough), and it isn’t super close up, but all that still does not detract from how stompin’ this is. Great fun! Audience 8.2 - A good recording that gives you the whole show in clear, decent quality with maybe the only real flaw being a sort of pushed back guitar but it is there and you can get just about everything in the mix. Enjoyable! -
Audience 9.2 - This recording has a special quality to it, it’s not that it’s technically great – the instrument separation isn’t very good but the band does project well – the thing about this tape is it feels like you are sitting just above the audience, in the middle of the room, and you hear the space around you, you have a great sense of where you are and it’s weird but you can visualize this show. I give it a high rating because this recording captures the “essence” of this moment in time in an accurate manner that allows the listener to be transported. Audience 9.5 - Superb fidelity, and as always a fine performance is delivered with that trademark menacing keyboard sound. At times it could be confused with electric guitar, which is exactly what I think Gianni Leone was going for since the start of the band in 1972. Audience 9.4 - This is a revelation for me. I was not too familiar with the band and always assumed they were just another “Neo Prog” band from the 80’s. Boy am I wrong! This is KILLER! The audio quality is thankfully excellent and bright so as to capture the insane complexity and brilliance of this band. Sure, there’s going to be obvious attempts to compare them to other bands but to my ears they had something unique going, while also tipping the cap to bands like Marillion, Genesis, and UK. The amount of ideas going on in each song is beyond belief. Audience 8.7 - It’s hard to screw up a recording when you have good equipment and decent seats, unless you fall asleep and drop the recorder on the floor. This crew didn’t, and the results are very good to the ears.
