Soundboard 9.8 - Almost perfect. -
Audience 9.0/9.2 - Two very good captures that convey a lot of information, most notably the popularity of the band at such an early stage of their careers, and that the Japanese used very high quality taping gear and knew instinctively how to stealth record a rock show. This is good for historical purposes in that these recordings always eventually take on much more significance with the passage of time. This is my argument for why artists should relax their stances against "bootlegging" because while your moment may be on the surface a commercial venture, in the long run it is a milestone not just for the artist in their career but in the overall culture and therefore should be, if possible, preserved. End of rant.

Audience 8.6 - Pretty solid actually, you get pretty good instrument separation even though the rhythm guitar and bass combination is REALLY powerful on this tape, just thankfully not enough to bury the lead work which rings out over the top of it all. Audience 8.5 - This tape sounds very low generation if not direct from a master, very articulate high end but missing a good solid low end – that does not kill it though. It’s got a good amount of hall atmosphere without actual reverb effect which is fine. Listening to this, I realize that the Turbo tour was really damn good, a lot of good songs and great playing.

Audience 9.2 - A solid one, with a good timbre and pleasantly punchy in the mids, enough highs to get crispness without sizzle, and a smooth bottom end without boom or overwhelming rumble. It’s really quite excellent, with a sound leaping out of the speakers at you! Audience 8.6 - A gem of a show, and a recording that thankfully is pretty decent although it does highlight Halford at the expense of the rest of the band. That actually works well here because Rob is just killing it, hitting every high note and wowing the audience. The musicianship is as always a cut above the rest, hence the reason this band lives on to this day. A keeper! -
Audience 8.8 - A really good tape with a loud and phat bottom end that is probably not that unlike what the actual sound would have been at the show. If the vocals were a little bit louder I would have mistaken this for a radio broadcast. Audience 8.5-9.1 All in all, for what you are privy to hear in this collection (some pretty darn rare bits!), it’s pretty good and listenable. It sounds to me that the band, from 1973 and again a few years later in 1975/78 REALLY progressed, it’s almost like night and day. Audience 8.6 - A surprise because the inclination is to assume this tape will suck – and it’s true it is not high-fidelity but it’s clear and decent and being one of those very few pre-1978 tapes I feel it is a must have for Priest fans. FM Broadcast 9.2 - A professionally recorded and mixed production that does not seem to have much in the way of compression so it has a good spaciousness to it, it is crankable. -
Audience 8.7 - It’s getting harder and harder to find recordings such as this. For one thing, it’s something that I never heard before, either it has been hidden in someone’s shoebox or just got overlooked but either way it’s a GREAT find and sounds real good, with plenty of atmospherics without being washed out or boomy. Great job by taper! Audience 8.5 - This recording has a lot working in its favor by mainly allowing the listener to hear each instrument clearly. The tape does have sonic limitations in that it sounds like the taper wisely dialed down the levels so as not to overload the signal, especially as JP was probably quite loud. This means that you will want to turn the volume up a little even though it may mean that you also bring up some background noise, which is present but not invasive. It’s a very good tape, I believe that this has been re-mastered too, so I consider it an upgrade to other versions that may be out there, although I was unfamiliar with this show until recently. -

CD 1 and 2: Madrid - Aud 7.8 - Focus on the guitars here, so less than stellar but good for listening to the amazing guitar interplay which is superb during this show CD 3 and 4: Niagara Falls - Aud 8.4 - A remastered version of a pretty good gig, sound is very bright and lively, and that helps convey the manic energy of the band and audience, who respond overwhelmingly. Both shows offer benefits to the Priest fans. -

Pro Recording 9.3 - The reason this is not listed as a soundboard (and it very well may be) is because they way it was recorded sounds like they may have hung microphones rather than direct through board. In this case I find the recording to be more preferable to the “dry” board mix, here you get some atmosphere and it helps immensely! Audience 9.7 and Soundboard 9.3 - Opening for ELP, this is the short lived Robert Fleischman period just before the arrival of Steve Perry. Hard to find anything about this recording to complain about, it’s amazingly life-like and extremely dynamic – about the only fault is how short it is. Taper arrived late, but makes up for it with a stellar recording. The bonus concert is a KBFH broadcast of a show taped in New York in 1978 of excellent quality. Formed in 1969, legendary heavy Southern psyche rock group Josefus took Texas by storm, recording a monumental LP (Dead Man) and touring throughout Texas in 1969 (opening act for Grand Funk on most of the Texas dates). Somehow, through all the craziness, they have kept it together (original singer and guitarist) all these years and continue to record and play live. This CD showcases an exceptional live performance on one side (this was originally done on vinyl which is now out of print) and a rare 1978 studio session on the other side (was lost for over 35 years!). FM Broadcast 9.0 - This material was broadcast in 1974, and so you can tell the performances were somewhat pro or at least held up pretty well. There is a slightly amateurish nature to the old tapes but therein lies the charm, since Joni herself pours charm out of her like maple syrup. Pro 8.8 - Recorded for TV broadcast, this is really great stuff with only perhaps the age of the tape coming into play, but not in any kind of annoying way, just maybe a bit of tape noise in the background. All in all it’s really quite good. -

Audience 8.3 - Both shows recorded by same taper so sound quality consistent throughout. This is another one of those “right in the middle of the action” tapes, where literally you sense the surroundings, and settle yourself in to what will be a wild night of rock and roll music. Quality is decent, without too much in the way of dynamics, but also this is not a muddy, crappy recording, it’s just not showcasing a wide range of tones. What you do get is a total immersion, and a very real sense of the electricity in the air (and in the excitable crowd). FOGHAT Music Hall Boston MA. Radio Broadcast 8.9 - Two different sources were used to make one complete broadcast and as such there is slight audio change throughout, but all is good because it is all very good! Some signs of time and dust but for the most part it is a tape that delivers…and what you might notice is how articulate Johnny’s playing is around this time. Soundboard 8.7 - This is a pro recording but what hurts it is the upper end frequencies, they seem a bit shrill to me. Now, the good news is that you can EQ this and since the highs are so present, you won’t lose them with any EQ’ing. So I think this tape is a sound engineer’s dream. -
Soundboard 8.8 - A good live radio broadcast with emphasis on the guitar where it should be of course. Sound ranges towards treble and that gives guitar lots of bite, however everything else is right there. -
Audience 8.5 - A good and clear tape that stays pretty much in the center channel, without a bunch of dynamics but also no distractions either. It’s a solid capture of a great period for Johnny Winter. -
Audience 7.4 - Consider this a big upgrade to whatever was previously circulating. From original master cassette tape, the sound is focused on guitar primarily, with everything else being somewhat unclear or just not as distinct in the mix. I would call this average, but I am happy to have an upgrade to what was once very much below average. Besides, it’s classic Johnny Winter And – perhaps many people’s favorite line up. -
Audience 9.7 - If you were previously unaware of this tape, get ready for a supersonic blast of low down and dirty twin guitar American Blues Rock and Roll like you won’t believe. I don’t know how it can much better than this, I mean, it’s like you’re sitting right in front of the stage. Audience 7.4 - 7.7 - Varies because most of the show is pretty decent coming from a master cassette tape, but towards the end it decreases just a little bit and makes me think taper had to relocate or something. I believe this show was recorded a little later than the official live album recordings. -

Audience 9.2 - Amazing recording! Not that it is perfect, in fact, the audio mix is off, but it is off in a spectacular way. So, it’s basically guitar, I mean, plugged directly into your brain and proceeding to torch your brain cells until they are dry spots on the carpet. Yeah, it’s like that, but don’t worry if you do not hear vocals perfectly, or bass is too low, or drums are not pounding because while all that is here, it is predominately the Johnny Winter and his hypnotizing psychedelic blues at maximum volume show. Now, the tape does show signs of age, mainly with some light hiss present and occasionally the volume decreases but not in a really annoying way at all. This is some fiery playing and a pretty clear, and sometimes dynamic tape. -
Pro FM Broadcast 8.8 - Sounds like the band is right at the top of their game, with Johnny inspired and ripping out one superb lead after another flawlessly.
