• Audience 8.7 - A somewhat subdued tape that begs for increased volume, which actually may be fine if you have a nice pre-amp…or just turn this up and get down because it isn’t bad. One thing I do appreciate about this tape is that Tony Martin is probably the clearest out of everything, then maybe Iommi and especially his lead work which really rings out. All instruments are present, I think this tape is a keeper. • Audience 9.4 - Let me say straight away that this is a MUST for anyone who digs Steve Miller Band…and even if you don’t. This is fantastic! Great, and I mean GREAT live atmosphere that totally puts you in the moment. A real treat for the music enthusiast and collector – even the guys who swear they won’t listen to any audience tapes. • Audience 8.7 - Do not be dissuaded by the rating, yes there are innumerable pristine board tapes out there to enjoy but let me tell you this show is a MONSTER! I was exhausted by the end, and what an ending stretch it is. The audio is very decent with a wide stereo field which helps it. When I first heard this tape I knew it needed to be refreshed because the performance was extraordinary and in fact it was a big event at the time. I remember hearing about it and I live in Texas! So, with that in mind I worked on it and the result is very convincing and gives life to the tape. It’s not going to be the best sounding show you’ve ever heard but it will be one of the best performances you’ve ever heard. I think this is worth it. Prince Madison Square Garden New York City, NY. • Audience 8.8 - The one thing that all the Japanese 78 audience tapes share in common is that the taper is A. Usually recording on some decent gear B. Usually sitting somewhere at least in the middle of the venue and not in the corner against the back wall and C. usually benefitting from quiet, respectful audiences (when they aren’t clapping during the songs as they did for the rock and roll acts of the time, thankfully I guess they afforded Jeff Beck a mostly non-clapping show with a few exceptions). This recording is pretty decent sounding, and I am sure it is going to sound even better once you tweak it to your liking at home. • Audience 9.2 - This recording is very clean and very bright, it does not favor the bass but what you’ll find is that the guitar sounds like it’s right next to you (which for the taper maybe it was). That is what is going to bring you into this show anyway – it’s all here, it’s a great recording with excellent airspace (atmosphere) allowing the sounds to breath.

  • Audience 9.0 - This is a very good recording that delivers most of what you need, but for someone who perhaps understands the nuances of sound they may have wished for hearing this from a little bit closer with more clarity. That is nitpicking though – I think this sounds very very decent. The main attraction is Jeff Beck’s guitar playing and Johnny Depp’s accompaniment and you get that all very nicely. • Audience 8.8 - Taper seems to have a pretty decent set up, because this recording sounds very lively, bright, and there are enough dynamics here to satisfy. What is apparent though is that the poor taper seems to be having to deal with the Japanese phenomena of clapping during songs (not all of them, but yeah the crowd is super enthusiastic). In this sense, because it’s a good recording, I went along with the energy and excitement, settled in, and had a real good time. You will too! • Audience 8.8 - This show, while not the soundboard you expect since there’s so many from this tour, is a real charmer regardless. I am not trying to sell you on this, this just captivated me and by the end of the show I felt like I somehow knew Eric personally a little tiny bit. The audio is pretty good, let’s just say I listened all the way through because this tape and Eric’s delivery kind of pulled me in. Eric Clapton Madison Square Garden New York City NY. • Audience 8.9 - This recording is super duper realistic, meaning it’s probably exactly as your ears would have heard had you been in tapers seats…a but far back but because taper used exceptional quality gear you get a crystal clear sound. It’s the main PA mix that you hear which is not an ideal mix to be honest. Guitar and vocals are not pronounced but horns are prominent which kind of gives a unique way to hear the band. Is that bad? Well, I am not saying instruments are buried, I am saying the mix does not favor them and overall this is a unique recording that provides realism of atmosphere and amazingly clear and clean sound. Worth exploring for sure. A 1985 concert is a 1975 concert is a 2005 concert – consistently excellent and never selling out integrity for anything approaching chart success.
