Audience 8.8 - A reasonably clear and even somewhat dynamic old tape, that sounds to me like someone did some work on it and thankfully so. I’ll take as many of these 1980 tapes as I can because I think this is a misunderstood period for the band. I personally think this is incredibly progressive music, and of course they sound great especially here in front of a London audience. Radio Broadcast 8.7 - This is one of the toughest tapes to review because I don’t know what it is, literally I don’t know how they captured this to tape. To my ears it sounds like it was broadcast over the air and someone placed a microphone in front of their stereo speaker and recorded it. Either that or maybe it was broadcast over AM, I just can’t tell you but for sure it’s not as good as a radio broadcast should be, not is it as bad as an amateur audience recording, this one hovers somewhere in between but I still thought it was decent. Someone definitely re-mastered this, and I am 100% sure it was a major benefit. Audience 9.8 - Your ears will be telling you this HAS to be a soundboard, then the song ends and you hear the audience right next to you and you say to yourself “thank goodness I picked this one up” yes even though it’s an audience tape it will BLOW YOUR MIND it’s so good. Audience 9.2 - Someone did a really good job handling this stealth recording because it’s quite good and has enough atmosphere to allow you to imagine being there. I like “time capsule” recordings like this. The band sounds inspired on this evening. Audience 9.1 - A very bright and energetic recording that does NOT suffer at all from anything getting in between the band and the microphone because there’s nothing between the band and the recorder it seems. Listen to how Mick sounds especially on Shattered – it’s perfect end of story but wait a minute Bill Wyman is actually present and accounted for in a way you never hear. Audience 8.8 - This old tape is fascinating, and frustrating. The “DJ” is a guy who seems to work for a local radio station who somehow got to broadcast this show – but my spidey sense says it’s not actually what went down. This is a ruse to get the tape machine into the venue, I am willing to bet money on it. So, he’s in the venue but to keep up appearances he does station ID’s periodically (almost every song) and because of his cheap recorder, the station id he does just sounds like a loud sonic swoosh (thankfully they are real short). Zep are in good form but fight constantly against poor PA which makes for a very interesting evening and a unique tape. One thing I want to point out is that because of the weird PA problems, it seems Page is getting much more feedback than normal and it causes him to sound much more psychedelic and I actually enjoyed that very much. Soundboard 9.7 - Terrific in every way this one will melt your brain. The engineer mixes this on the fly and works it out during Brown Sugar but there are some cool moments while he figures it out – like some stereo panning, and you’ll hear him juggle the bass a bit, but he gets the mix right and off we go! Audience 9.2 - This recording has a special quality to it, it’s not that it’s technically great – the instrument separation isn’t very good but the band does project well – the thing about this tape is it feels like you are sitting just above the audience, in the middle of the room, and you hear the space around you, you have a great sense of where you are and it’s weird but you can visualize this show. I give it a high rating because this recording captures the “essence” of this moment in time in an accurate manner that allows the listener to be transported. Audience 9.0 - Here’s a great sounding complete show from the ambitious “reunion” tour of 1974 which had the band in not only fine form but giving audiences a marathon set loaded with excellent songs. This is surely one for all collectors of great music regardless of any particular artist because if it’s good, it’s good the ears don’t lie…and this one is good! Both of these sets are Soundboard quality and very cool to listen to. Good British heavy rock and roll, good players, good everything and well worth rediscovering. Audience 8.4-8.6 - This gets a double rating because I found that it seemed to become better as it went, and really had its best moments during songs or parts that were not full on max volume. Now that being said, the mic that taper used (probably a condenser mic built into his deck) could not accurately reproduce the sound it was picking up in the hall to the tape itself – but because there was level adjust (I am guessing auto level), it never distorted. So what you get is a crowded sounding tape during most of the performance when the music is at full tilt (it’s Black Sabbath so yeah, it’s mostly full tilt), but during parts where the music is more sparse (like during Black Sabbath, or the solos, especially the drum solo) you can hear what the recorder was capable of because it is way much better. In fact I praise the drum sounds, super massive and that’s why I loved Black Sabbath on this tape in particular because it’s frighteningly dense and scary sounding here. This show can be appreciated for the inclusion of songs like Gypsy, All Moving Parts, and Rock and Roll Doctor which are audible enough that you can thank this taper. I’d not heard of this tape before so I assume it’s new to circulation, and personally speaking I am glad it exists and I feel it offers something worthwhile.
