If I was a fan I would still love this show, I mean, it’s clear and clean and it’s finely performed so there’s no real downside here.   • Soundboard 8.7 - The only flaw with this tape is that it features a typical video compression type sound but the mastering job mitigated a lot of that so that the sound does breathe a bit more. It’s still very good, a little rough maybe but I take it and I am happy with it especially if nothing else because all instruments are present, the bass work is surprisingly defined in this mix…I can actually hear individual notes being played and my goodness Michael Anthony was a boss!   • Audience 8.7 - This is a very strong, clear tape that captures almost too much atmosphere (crowd) and leans towards the upper-mid band frequencies a little much. That being said, I still recommend this one because the sound is good enough to be very responsive to EQ, so if you season it to taste you will end up with a very nice experience. I instantly assumed any 80’s band was shite…I was so stuck in my own world of Pink Floyd, Steppenwolf, Hendrix, Van Halen, Sabbath, Zeppelin….but I should have been more open minded.   • Audience 9.1 - This is a very cool old tape, first I have to issue a disclaimer: If you don’t like deep, round, brassy bass you won’t like this recording. Bass is the star of this show, and I don’t mean it’s a low end muddy mess either – it’s a beautiful bass sound that pretty much drowns out most of the keyboards (not entirely) and at least vocals area able to hold their own in the mix.  That all being said – this ROCKS!  I love it, I love hearing the tone and detail of the solid bass work of Greg Lake. It’s a bunch of free-thinking kids who’ve smoked a little something, maybe popped a few little somethings…and then whaddya know the blues and folk and country and all kinds of music you grew up with sounds a whole lot better if you amp it up and throw some wild licks here and there…maybe let the sound feedback some…the birth of the San Francisco sound of the 60’s. Some minor bumps and bruises with the old tape but it also sounds like it’s right in your living room so the minor hiccups don’t even phase you.   • Studio 9.2/9.6  - Not a lot to complain about here except maybe just the little bit of tape hiss (unremarkable). I found it interesting to hear the early takes because on some of the tracks it really shows less of the Southern influence and more of the psychedelic influence (listen to their cover of Evil Ways).   • Audience 8.7 - This slightly above average tape sounds like it has been re-mastered and life restored to it, but the mix favors percussion and keys. The rest of the band is a little behind them but thankfully Carlos’ solos rise up above much more in the mix.  I did find it an interesting tape with an atmosphere that lets you kind of soak up the Italian vibe – between the chatter and the feel of the venue itself it is kind of strangely…renaissance.  Let’s just say the recording captures a little more than just the rock band that evening and it adds a lot to the experience. That is why I can still recommend this to fans, and the fact that it is 1971 which is that interesting period with Neil Schon.   • Studio 9.0-9.4 - Varies as far as the overall sound and mix but does not stray much below a solid 9.0…but man what you are getting here is bona fide Aerosmith and NOT the dressed up, slicked out, packaged presentation of Aerosmith that the record company needed in order to make vast profits.  This is down and dirty, raw, primal, and above all – fantastic!  To hear unadulterated guitars, guttural, almost fuzz style bass, and howling, tortured Steven, and this is 1987 mind you! How can it be?  I don’t know but this set rocks! Open, great stereo pan, and for once I actually heard the keyboards and I could not even believe some of the little quirky bits that it added to the music.   • Audience 8.7 - Do not be put off by the rating! This is a very strong 8.7 verging closer to 8.8. Why do I stress that?  Because it has a lot going for it, the only black mark I hold against it is due to the lack of distinction between guitars and Paul being pushed back in the sound mix. That being said, it’s more the “mix” of the guitars that leads me to say that, not that you can’t pick each one up. I think I am just being picky though. No distortion, max volume, hear every instrument – in fact great separation of the guitars that is so realistic and cool they seem to pan across the speakers!  A very well done tape for this time period in that it does not sound like one of those heavily compressed Aiwa tape recordings, it has a lot of liveliness and decent headroom.   • Audience 8.6 - A tape that has gone through extensive rehabilitation and is now something I can recommend to fans. First off, you no longer have a low volume, crowded tape – this new re-master has the sound panned wider which allowed the muddier channel to be dealt with properly…all the work has paid off because, quite frankly, any 70’s-‘80’s Priest tape needs to be considered as historically valuable, right up to around 1986 IMHO.   • SDBRD 9.8 - Fantastic upgrade to what was already a super good tape. Why is it so much better? Transferring off a newly discovered pre-broadcast master, you really can get all the ambience, the background, the crisper highs and deeper lows…all of this adds up to something really special. Even if you already have this, I recommend getting this upgrade version if nothing else just to compare the two. I think this ups the ante significantly.   • Adrian 1969 & Detroit 1970 Audience 9.1 - Surprisingly good and clear! I was very tempted to call this a board tape but there’s too many artifacts that suggest otherwise…but it’s an amazing find being now the earliest known Amboy Dukes tape. Detroit 1970 Audience 8.6 - The audio is clear but the live mix drowns out vocals. Drums are perhaps the strongest here, followed by the guitar/bass in tandem but I can also hear keys in the mix…so the verdict is that this tape is most welcome and delivers where it is needed even though it is a little rough around the edges.
