  • Aud 7.3 - Most of the 1970 audience tapes are horrible, barely audible sludge fests, this one is not. You actually can hear Jimi! His guitar, singing, and the band rise enough above the noise to actually provide a decent listening experience. Not great, but not the typical hot mess either.
  • Aud 8.7 - with reel to reel, Jimi recorded numerous private jam sessions throughout his short career. This is one, and it’s decent but there’s a bit of hiss present.

The first half of the first song you wonder how it will be, and you fear it might wobble because taper is adjusting things on the fly but it gets sorted and wow, I have to give props to taper on this one! He sounds maybe halfway back in the venue, so not close up, but he’s using either high end consumer gear or maybe something more professional to be able to lock in his levels and get a really good timbre. • Audience 8.5 - Ripping show! Monster guitar shred
  • Audience 7.8 - A somewhat distant sound, not as in stadium distant, but recording levels. It’s as if the center has dropped out from the mix, but what saves it is the fact that you can really turn up the volume and make up for some of that. The new re-mastering really has saved this tape; it is MUCH easier to listen to now. This is a RARE tape I am told, only surfacing recently.
  • Audience 9.0 - It takes a song or two for the tape to balance out to the ears but when it does you immediately sense how realistic a recording this is. I mean, this would have been exactly what your ears would have heard had you been there. Excellent!

  • Audience 7.8 - Let me first say this: Why did this album get panned so harshly? I mean, even the band expressed some regret over it. Look, I get that Passion Play may not fit with the preconception of what Jethro Tull’s music is supposed to be, but at face value the music and playing is superior. The fault may have been the accompanying stage show, and maybe if I were to criticize one thing about the compositions would be that they relied a lot on overly dramatic minor key shifts way too often. However that stuff does not diminish the overall content and performance of a fine and unfairly panned album. This CD captures a complete performance of Passion Play in pretty good overall quality with some minor issues here and there. Fascinating!
  • Audience 8.5 - A real surprise this old tape, it sounds pretty darn good! The sound is warm, rounded, and has great atmosphere without losing the immediate punch of the music.  Even at full tilt volume, the tape manages to hang together and not get overly saturated. Good job early tapers!
  • Audience 8.7 - Comfortable on the ears, with a true stereo mix making this a choice headphone experience.
  • Soundboard 9.4 - A terrific “live” sound and feel, it’s hard to tell even if it is a board tape because it just has too much “room” and atmosphere. It’s quite astonishing really, it’s a fantastic sound and mix, and feel, and of course there’s the band and their amazing material. What I can say is that you will love this and play it again…it is one of the best. Jethro Tull February 5th 1977 Apollo Theatre Manchester, England Disc 1 01 -Wondr'ing Aloud 2:29 02 -Skating Away 4:53 03 -Jack-In-The-Green 3:43 04 -Thick As A Brick 14:28 05 -Songs From The Wood 5:07 06 -Instrumental - Drum Solo 2:59 07 -To Cry You A Song 2:33 08 -A New Day Yesterday 2:49 09 -Flute Solo 7:18 10 -Living In The Past 1:37 11 -A New Day Yesterday (reprise) 2:49 12 -Velvet Green 6:57 Disc 2 01 -Hunting Girl 6:33 02 -Too Old To Rock'N'Roll 4:01 03 -Beethoven's Ninth Symphony 3:13 04 -Minstrel In The Gallery 5:22 05 -Aqualung 9:16 06 -Guitar Solo 3:05 07 -Wind-Up 4:41 08 -Back Door Angels 4:56 09 -Wind-Up (repise) 2:28 10 -Locomotive Breath 5:46 11 -Land Of Hope and Glory 2:24 12 -Back Door Angels (reprise) 1:34 Ian Anderson - vocals, flute, guitar Martin Barre - guitar John Glascock - bass guitar Barriemore Barlow - drums John Evan - keyboards David Palmer - keyboards, saxophone
  • Soundboard 9.8 - What makes this recording rate so highly is the professionalism all around – that means the band first for putting in the sparkling performance (and that’s even more succinct here with the unusual line-up and changing sound of Tull), and then the sound engineer for so deftly mixing and preserving this recording. I mean, it’s not just a board tape where you pop in the cassette and capture whatever sound you’ve dialed in for the evening, this is a well manicured mix that seemingly must have been made with a view towards a release because it is just too good, too perfectly balanced to be just a house mix. Jethro Tull L.A. Sports Arena Los Angeles, CA. • Soundboard 8.6 - A little noisy and compressed but still hot and a great show.
  • Audience 8.7 - Not too bad for 1972, this tape has some nice energy, and not to say it doesn’t have limitations, but it seems to deliver a lot more than the expectation. You have to accept that the hall is a touch echoey, or at least the guitar seems to bounce off the wall to give a very short reverb effect. It’s not a distraction at all, in fact it is exactly how it sounded at the show – the recording is very accurate. • Audience 8.3 - A dusty old tape, with signs of age including a bit of tape hiss. Sounds to me like this old tape could have benefited greatly from some remastering work but as it is, it’s listenable and a very fiery performance by the band. I like that you can hear every instrument, I think this recording has promise and I hope it gets a facelift soon. SPECIAL NOTE: Another title also going under the same date and venue has made the rounds but is in fact NOT Los Angeles 1970 (in fact it is listed on this site, so if you bought that, feel free to exchange it free of charge for the ACTUAL real date and venue that is that title - Anaheim 1970). • Audience 8.4 - A marathon concert!
  • Audience 8.6 - Good and clear recording, no distortion, sounds very center, punchy.
  • Audience 8.8 - Thankfully Tull fans can rejoice as another good quality Passion Play recording is available. What a vast leap it was from 1969 and 70’s bluesy Tull to 1973’s ambitious progressive rock extravaganza Passion Play! • Audience 8.7 - An immersive experience. Great presence, you can place yourself in the seat at the arena practically. No distortion, just clean energy and sound.
  • Audience 8.4 - Not a high fidelity recording, sounding almost like an AM radio broadcast, but it gets a good sound review because it’s got clear guitar and bass (some tape hiss) and vocals are very clear. When a new tape pops up from such an early vintage you always immediately suspect it will be muddy crap so it’s a pleasant surprise to hear that it is decent. I like this show too, it’s a regular tour stop but the band is out to prove a point – and that point is that Led Zeppelin is not the only great English heavy rock band touring the States. • Audience 8.8 - Here we have two concerts in very good quality that show a band undeniably at the peak, a peak that seemed to stretch out for a VERY long time I might add, but a creative peak that gave audiences a lot to digest musically. The quality of this tape is pretty decent but I give it a knock in the rating (although 8.8 is still high) because I got too much emphasis on an upper mid frequency that didn’t rub me the right way and this is a subjective analysis. The tape allows plenty of information in that you get pretty much everything, it’s clear, and the content is worth the price of admission. I am making a subjective observation but I feel the taper had done an amazing job and it would have gotten a 9.4 if the mic he used delivered more dynamics and a wider sound-field. Picky picky picky!  This sounds good. • Boston 1970 Audience 8.4 - The separation of instruments here is rather dense, not muddy, just not to a degree one would prefer. The sound itself is not bad, I actually do hear every instrument I just want certain things prominent when it comes to this band…I really need more detail in the guitar solos. I still think this is a good one for the collection – the band is not afraid to stretch out and jam, they have tremendous freedom onstage and it shows. Los Angeles 1970 Audience 9.3 - This is a sparkling recording, my guess is that the same crew that taped the infamous Zeppelin Blueberry Hill did this as well. To me it sounds similar. It’s short, but it’s very very sweet. Jethro Tull Disc 1 Boston July 10, 1970 1. Nothing Is Easy 2. My God (with extended flute solo) 3. To Cry You A Song 4. With You There To Help Me 5. • Audience 8.9 - A very powerful and full concert experience in stereo, clear and well balanced. So good!
  • Audience 8.3 - Not that bad really, some hiss present but otherwise it’s worthy of your attention.
  • Audience 9.1 - A very bright and energetic recording that does NOT suffer at all from anything getting in between the band and the microphone because there’s nothing between the band and the recorder it seems. • Audience 8.7 - Amazing for such an earlier audience source. It does border on the ragged edge of breakup, but it’s so real, so close, so powerful, I mean you are literally there. Fantastic to my ears (some tape noise but it goes away when the band is cranking it).
  • Audience 8.0 - Very loud up front tape which gets a little crowded during intense jams but is actually my kind of audience recording. It seems to be more exciting and electrified when it is so close to the stage as long as it doesn’t distort I love it.
  • Audience 9.3 - A brilliant, dynamic, and exciting recording that anyone could enjoy. I mean, this sounds like it could be officially released…not 100% perfect but I would not be as thrilled about it if it was perfect. I don’t need perfection, I need a good blend of excellent audio and nice atmosphere and this tape has that.
