Audience 8.5 - The thing with this tape is that it’s great on both ends…but in the middle it is kind of undefined. The sound begins to gell and battle itself for presence right in the middle frequency, but at the same time, when the frenzied battles end, like during quieter passages for instance, the sound is right in the pocket. It’s like the equipment wasn’t ready for the volume, but it still captures the sound in a pleasing to the ear frequency so you aren’t put off by the mix, you just strain a little to make out the details. And, the details are important in this line up because the twin guitar work at times is spectacular. I am critical of the mix for that reason, I want to hear every lick – but overall the consensus here is that this is a tape not to be missed. Audience 9.7 - both of these shows were recorded onto a 4-track machine which is clearly obvious when you hear just how crystal this stuff sounds, as well as the separation of instruments. Some minor stuff does occur with the old tape in a couple spots but that passes without much fuss, it’s hard to knock these recordings but I do have to let you know what I hear. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Telluride 1978 FM Broadcast 9.2 - A little hit and miss on the live mix, where sometimes I don’t get some of the background instruments associated with the synth or whatever is happening back there…but I could be wrong about that, I mean it is rather subjective whether I am hearing the mix as the band intended or if I need something personally – no matter, because this is lovely and warm, with just enough audience sound to give you a better representation of the liveness of the recorded gig. I need that, personally, otherwise you might as well just listen to the albums!
Boston 1978 FM Broadcast 9.7 - A very well preserved recording that features soaring instrumentation in crystal clear quality – highs are sweet and distinct and bass is warm and round. The mid tones are sublime, and your high-end system will love reproducing this recording!

NY 1978 SDBRD 9.3 - Really nice sounding, warm, well mixed. A couple of songs fade in, and a couple fade out, so that is unusual in my opinion for a board tape but it’s most of the songs, it isn’t drastic…and all the songs are instrumental anyway. A great one for the collector! Nuremberg 1980 SDBRD 9.5 - Another really good tape and excellent show, with minor complaint being a couple of fade ins and a couple of fade outs which only really may have an effect on those people who are intimately familiar with the band’s material. Gainesville 1978 Soundboard 9.5 - A professional straight board feed recording that is as clean and balanced as you’d ever want – but very occasionally there may be a slight tape drop out (rarely), and the sound is almost too good…meaning it could use some ambience and atmosphere but if you only want to hear this as a musical performance rather than event, this is damn near perfect.
Cincinnati 1989 Audience 9.7 - A soaring, elegant recording that captures this event in spectacular quality. Guitars seem to float over your head and wrap around your ears as they seem to pan across the room, drums filling the spaces and adding immediacy. When the audience claps and responds it’s as if it is a part of the show how it blends in and seems so respectful. Overall man this is a frighteningly good recording and performance and is pretty much in the “must have” range IMHO.

A 1985 concert is a 1975 concert is a 2005 concert – consistently excellent and never selling out integrity for anything approaching chart success. Radio Broadcast 8.8 - This is most definitely a broadcast although when it starts you may confuse it for a very good audience tape. The tape itself that was made from the broadcast is a little aged it seems but holds up pretty well. It’s a solid old tape, just could use a little brightening up. Disc 1 Denver 1976 Soundboard 9.5 - A very bright and clear board tape with emphasis in the mix for maximum vocal clarity, but I like the way the drums sound and the horns are very clear too. Overall this is a “funk” mix. My only criticism might be the sizzle of the cymbals but they aren’t crowding the mix which might have been a deal-breaker for me. This is good funked up stuff! Disc 2 Oakland 1977 Soundboard/open mic audience 9.3 - I have to say my ears do not lie and there definitely is a professional quality to this recording but I could swear they have ambient mic’s to add atmosphere or perhaps to fill gaps? When the music is playing it’s most def soundboard, that is all I know. Audience 8.4 - This is a hard one to set aside, it’s an uncommon tape that sounds very good. It’s bright, and atmospheric (not echoey!) without any big hall boominess. The real selling point here is that both Ozzy and Randy are the focus in this live mix. I say go ahead and grab it if you want to hear the very early Blizzard Of Ozz on tour ‘cause this is a great find. Audience 8.4 - This tape starts off rough but gradually opens up and ends up quite listenable especially considering this originates from an early tour stop in England 1980. These tapes are few and far between, so grab it is my advice. One thing I noticed, the sound timbre is rather eerie, a spooky kind of effect I can’t explain and it is magnified by the fact that Randy’s guitar is clearest in the mix. I could not help myself while listening to ponder what may have been, such an advanced musical sensibility that would have only gotten better. Sure, he was a great, mad front man in Sabbath, but I really didn’t see him as a solo act. Ozzy always struck me as crazy, fearless, yet almost child-like. He fitted well within the Sabbath context, and as part of a group; but on his own? How wrong I was. Nobody could have predicted just how successful his career would turn out to be. But it was obvious from the first time I saw him in concert and heard him play his new songs that Ozzy was going to be OK, more than OK in fact. The new album had some great tracks in “Crazy Train”, “Goodbye to Romance”, and “Mr. Crowley”, and he included Sabbath favorites “Iron Man”, “Children of the Grave”, and “Paranoid” in the live show, so how could he not be great? Oh, and Randy Rhoads was simply an incredible guitarist, just as good as his legend suggests. The tour called at Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle Mayfair and Sunderland Mayfair. The line-up of Blizzard of Ozz was Ozzy (of course) on vocals, the late and truly great guitarist Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley (Rainbow) on bass, Lee Kerslake (Uriah Heep) on drums and local lad Don Airey on keyboards (replaced by Lindsey Bridgewater for the tour). Support came from those excellent Welsh rock heroes Budgie. -

Montreal 1984 - Audience 8.6 A real curiosity this one is…and, well, I don’t know what to say. It’s authentic, I mean, it’s really Ozzy in his most staggeringly real persona (drunk off his ass). He can be forgiven, after all it is an after party at a club in Montreal, I’d be drunk too! Audience 8.5 - A pretty clear but somewhat distant tape, with Ozzy being front and center followed by Randy and then some tin can drums and little to no real bottom end – but you do hear the notes played which makes this one to investigate as it is not very well known about. As I listen, I think the selling point is indeed how relatively clean and clear it is, a good capture all in all. Drums get a little better… the bottom end remains thin though. Audience 7,8 - It’s hard to get across the reason why Ozzy/Randy era collectors really ought to get this even though the rating seems low. Well, it was lower until it got remastered, and that helped highlight what is good on this tape, which is that the guitar is nicely in front, and that you can actually hear everything and it is not distorted or too muddy…except when taper seems to have to hide his mic, which thankfully is not often. But, yes, it’s got issues like most stadium rock bands that played at high volume, where the tape deck just cannot get the hugeness of the sound onto the old magnetic tape. Now, let me just say, when Randy solos, you get that clear and center here, and especially during his solo part in Suicide Solution where it’s just him. It’s kind of like pulling off the bed sheets, it really opens up. A good tape for collectors that has a lot to offer, the bonus being it is not a common tape at all. -
Audience 7.2 - Big outdoor stadium sound. Not great, but does have atmosphere and guitar can be heard throughout. -
Studio Quality 9.8 - Almost as good as could be, a tiny amount of hum only noticeable at the beginning and end of songs…this is almost perfect but it is unmastered studio demos that to my ears sound very close to final mix. Audience 8.3 - This recording is super lively but there’s some crowding and crunchiness right in the middle frequencies that takes some of the clarity out with it, but it’s just a great listen nonetheless. I am surprised I was not familiar with this show, it’s a keeper. -

SDBRD 9.4 - I actually believe this recording probably sounds a lot better than what the people at the show were hearing. I say that because these huge outdoor concerts did not always have the pinnacle of clear sound mixes, and ear-bleeding volume does not always mean it sounds good it just means it sounds stupid loud. I’d rather have a good sounding recording rather than the damaged hearing.
