Soundboard 9.2 - Both excellent, crisp and clear and brilliantly performed. -
Audience 8.8 - Solid right in the middle, with perhaps a little bit of “darkness” in the mix towards the low end that causes a fractional amount of over saturation but this is a fine recording. Let me put it this way, something like this seems to have been “authorized” or at least recorded with the knowledge of the artists. It’s placed too well in the venue, and no audience interference you have to think they knew it was being recorded. -

Audience 8.6 - Both recordings seem to sound quite similar and garner the middle 8 rating but don’t let that dissuade you – these are not bad at all. Considering the scarcity of live Omega recordings I would say these deserve some time in the player, and the ears will adjust and you’ll find them of redeeming value. The material is progressive and at times ventures into more risky territory for a prog band but the band can be forgiven for that as overall I appreciate the adventure. Audience 9.0 - This is a heroic taping accomplishment, to be able to get virtually all of the performers in really nice quality, it’s an effort to be admired. Heavy, rural psyche that features pretty acid influenced guitar (putting it mildly) stoned, psychedelic lyrics with an Eastern mysticism pervading. Effects include conch shell through echoplex (yup), flutes, walls of feedback, sort of what you might get if you mixed Ya-Ho-Wa 13 with Tangerine Dream, Loch Ness, Hendrix, and Amon Duul. Audience 7.5 - Pretty clear, some natural reverb from the hall present but surprising clarity in the highs so I gather this is a very low generation tape source. -
Begun in Houston in 1969, brothers Duane and Bill Massey created an eclectic hard rocking progressive rock band that survived numerous line-up changes over the years and still exists to this day. An album, "Ruff Mix", was released in 1975 and features excellent arrangements augmented with blazing electric guitar by Richard Heath who went on to join Lic. This CD captures them in the early 80's where more emphasis was placed on hard guitar sounds, not necessarily metal but good Texas hard rock. -
This is the follow up album to the recent reissue of Ruff Mix, the band's official studio offering released in 1975. Culled from the band's personal archives, the music was saved from destruction (literally the master tapes burned in a fire and barely survived) and remixed to present a picture of the band just prior to recording Ruff Mix, and then a few years after its release. The CD features late guitarist Richard Heath (Oz Knozz, Lady Killer, Lic) on side 1 and Rick Wheeler on side 2. -

Soundboard 9.7 - I saw this band around the same time and I can tell you it’s great that there are board tapes around because even though they were spectacular live, the sound was very dense and there’s a lot going on. With this tape you can hear it all in glorious quality, it’s prime stuff, psychedelic rock taken to the next level. This set collects not so widely available shows of varying quality but certainly ones that fill in missing parts to a collection. CD 1 - Audience 7.4 - Actually not that bad at all, and probably one of the better ones of this set. CD 2 - Audience 7.7 - Fine recording that kind of stays in a rather crisp mode, but if I were to remaster it or want to add bass this recording is a PERFECT one because highs are so good on this, and accurate to a fault really. A decent recording that needs low end but VERY enjoyable! CD 3 - Audience 7.0 - Might be the worst of this set, but Randy is clear here on this tape, followed by Ozzy, so the priorities are at least straight! CD 4 - Audience 7.5 - Right down the middle, as far as sound-field, but it is not that hard to go ahead and appreciate this for what it is. Mediocre and at times gets really good and clear especially during softer sections of songs. CD 5 - Audience 7.3 - I would rate this higher for the fact that levels are good, and everything can be heard, but the fault is that everything is mid to upper band and gets too harsh for me. I think a good EQ would do wonders, because at least the mids and highs are there in which to round out more and even reduce in favor of low mid and low frequencies. -

Audience 8.6 - This recording really surprised me. I saw Ozzy around this time and it was excruciatingly loud so I wondered how could anyone get a good capture unless they were using excellent mics and level control? I guess someone did. Cleveland 1981 is an FM Broadcast 9.2 which I had not heard before believe it or not, so, I was suitably impressed. Anyone would be appreciative! The second disc (and most of the 3rd) is Montreal 81 and is an FM Broadcast 8.9 due to a more subdued signal that does not take away any frequency range but rather slightly compresses the sound just a bit. Now I want the listener to realize that this is a subjective opinion, technically speaking the audio here is excellent so it’s a matter of personal taste in this case. The second half of disc 3 is all studio quality. Open, great stereo pan, and for once I actually heard the keyboards and I could not even believe some of the little quirky bits that it added to the music. SDBRD 9.4 - I actually believe this recording probably sounds a lot better than what the people at the show were hearing. I say that because these huge outdoor concerts did not always have the pinnacle of clear sound mixes, and ear-bleeding volume does not always mean it sounds good it just means it sounds stupid loud. I’d rather have a good sounding recording rather than the damaged hearing. -

Studio Quality 9.8 - Almost as good as could be, a tiny amount of hum only noticeable at the beginning and end of songs…this is almost perfect but it is unmastered studio demos that to my ears sound very close to final mix. Audience 7,8 - It’s hard to get across the reason why Ozzy/Randy era collectors really ought to get this even though the rating seems low. Well, it was lower until it got remastered, and that helped highlight what is good on this tape, which is that the guitar is nicely in front, and that you can actually hear everything and it is not distorted or too muddy…except when taper seems to have to hide his mic, which thankfully is not often. But, yes, it’s got issues like most stadium rock bands that played at high volume, where the tape deck just cannot get the hugeness of the sound onto the old magnetic tape. Now, let me just say, when Randy solos, you get that clear and center here, and especially during his solo part in Suicide Solution where it’s just him. It’s kind of like pulling off the bed sheets, it really opens up. A good tape for collectors that has a lot to offer, the bonus being it is not a common tape at all. -
Audience 8.5 - A pretty clear but somewhat distant tape, with Ozzy being front and center followed by Randy and then some tin can drums and little to no real bottom end – but you do hear the notes played which makes this one to investigate as it is not very well known about. As I listen, I think the selling point is indeed how relatively clean and clear it is, a good capture all in all. Drums get a little better… the bottom end remains thin though. Audience 8.4 - This tape starts off rough but gradually opens up and ends up quite listenable especially considering this originates from an early tour stop in England 1980. These tapes are few and far between, so grab it is my advice. One thing I noticed, the sound timbre is rather eerie, a spooky kind of effect I can’t explain and it is magnified by the fact that Randy’s guitar is clearest in the mix. I could not help myself while listening to ponder what may have been, such an advanced musical sensibility that would have only gotten better. Sure, he was a great, mad front man in Sabbath, but I really didn’t see him as a solo act. Ozzy always struck me as crazy, fearless, yet almost child-like. He fitted well within the Sabbath context, and as part of a group; but on his own? How wrong I was. Nobody could have predicted just how successful his career would turn out to be. But it was obvious from the first time I saw him in concert and heard him play his new songs that Ozzy was going to be OK, more than OK in fact. The new album had some great tracks in “Crazy Train”, “Goodbye to Romance”, and “Mr. Crowley”, and he included Sabbath favorites “Iron Man”, “Children of the Grave”, and “Paranoid” in the live show, so how could he not be great? Oh, and Randy Rhoads was simply an incredible guitarist, just as good as his legend suggests. The tour called at Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle Mayfair and Sunderland Mayfair. The line-up of Blizzard of Ozz was Ozzy (of course) on vocals, the late and truly great guitarist Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley (Rainbow) on bass, Lee Kerslake (Uriah Heep) on drums and local lad Don Airey on keyboards (replaced by Lindsey Bridgewater for the tour). Support came from those excellent Welsh rock heroes Budgie. -
Audience 8.4 - This is a hard one to set aside, it’s an uncommon tape that sounds very good. It’s bright, and atmospheric (not echoey!) without any big hall boominess. The real selling point here is that both Ozzy and Randy are the focus in this live mix. I say go ahead and grab it if you want to hear the very early Blizzard Of Ozz on tour ‘cause this is a great find. Disc 1 Denver 1976 Soundboard 9.5 - A very bright and clear board tape with emphasis in the mix for maximum vocal clarity, but I like the way the drums sound and the horns are very clear too. Overall this is a “funk” mix. My only criticism might be the sizzle of the cymbals but they aren’t crowding the mix which might have been a deal-breaker for me. This is good funked up stuff! Disc 2 Oakland 1977 Soundboard/open mic audience 9.3 - I have to say my ears do not lie and there definitely is a professional quality to this recording but I could swear they have ambient mic’s to add atmosphere or perhaps to fill gaps? When the music is playing it’s most def soundboard, that is all I know. Detroit 1978 Soundboard 9.0 - A somewhat compressed but excellent tape, I particularly love this one because they play Maggot Brain which is my fave PFunk tune. The tape itself that was made from the broadcast is a little aged it seems but holds up pretty well. It’s a solid old tape, just could use a little brightening up. Soundboard 9.5 - This is a brilliant recording, razor sharp and electric at a time when most music was becoming rather lame. Not saying Pat Benatar did not have her share of radio friendly numbers, but even those featured good, solid rock guitar that did not resemble anything else offered by mainstream top 40 at that time (aside for maybe The Cars and Foreigner…and Cheap Trick).
