Audience 9.3 - This show rates highly in the audio department because of how the guitars sound and I am a guitar guy so there is some bias…but it doesn’t matter what I like because it’s just a great recording all around. The sound envelopes you, it’s a completely immersive type of recording and will suck you in immediately. What a great find this is! Audience 8.9 - It’s amazing how tapes still pop up after so many years and sound like they were recorded yesterday. This is one such tape. The music also holds up, and since I never saw Elton John live I am still impressed with how much the guitar factors in to this show. I enjoyed this performance and I felt the excitement of the crowd and felt totally transported which is the hallmark of a well-done recording. Audience 8.2 - Not one of the better ones, it lacks clarity (drums are actually pretty clear though, and the vocals do rise above somewhat) and to these ears, I gotta say, this is the closest I have ever heard Boston sounding like a heavy metal concert. The lack of sonic clarity does not mean you can’t tell they were f’ing loud! Disc 1 Audience 8.7 - Surprisingly decent effort capturing a rarely recorded Borneo Band in what sounds like a small club. Disc 2 Soundboard 8.7 - A tape showing age, but of decent enough quality that you can dive in and enjoy this rare recording. Audience 8.5 - While some may say this recording is not technically that great, I beg to differ. Now, it is not super clear, but it is not muddy…it is not distant, it is not super dynamic but it still has guts and balls. I actually REALLY grooved to this, and the band is ferocious sounding. Hearing the fresh faced Vinnie Appice on drums for the first time with Sabbath and he’s really driving the beat, a different style to Bill Ward. This one is a must have for anyone that calls themselves a Sabbath fan. It’s THAT important. Soundboard 8.8 - OK, so yeah this board tape is extremely clear but it suffers from the sterility of most board tapes, and when the band is ACDC, you really need that electric atmosphere a rowdy audience provides. I also found this tape kind of missing some “guts”, but, if you want to hear everything, all guitars and drums, vocals (including backing vocals), then you can’t miss with a clean board tape that allows everything to be present. Audience 8.8 - At first my thought was that this was a recording for a broadcast because even though it sounds like an audience recording, that may just mean that the station used room mics to capture the concert. What tipped me off to the fact that this is indeed just a really good audience tape is the clapping near the mic after the songs. Truly somewhat of an oddball release, this album stems from a long lost rehearsal session by a bunch of stoned South African teenagers in the late 60's. Not much was even known about them, not even at the time as the band never gigged or recorded a legitimate album. Still, the music reverberates with manic acid rock intensity. You've been warned! -
Audience 8.7 - This recording is better than it has a right to be, after all it is in a big stadium, early 70’s so the gear, if it doesn’t weigh 80 pounds, has to be cheap crap…but, dang it this sounds cool! Granted, instrument separation isn’t great (it is good enough), and it isn’t super close up, but all that still does not detract from how stompin’ this is. Great fun! Studio Quality 9.5 - I am thankful for this because it has further taught me to appreciate and respect Clapton’s musicality, and his desire to remain true to himself first and foremost.
