• Radio Broadcast 9.3 - Some tape hiss but otherwise a beautiful full sounding set here. This music is glorious, it’s maybe not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s very heartfelt and genuine, delicate, contemplative, uplifting. Highly recommended! • Audience 8.8 - This may not be a tape with good song separation or detail but it occupies a sonic range that is very comfortable on the ears. Usually when attending a very loud, bombastic heavy rock or metal concert you aren’t going to distinguish much anyway, you will basically hear a roaring sound…but this tape delivers a little more than just that. This is a good document and taper used good gear, sat in a good spot, and recorded everything. I would call this recording completely immersive, with a warm, inviting sound. • Pro TV Studio 8.7 - A good live recording with atmosphere, it sounds slightly dated but has the ability to transport you to the time and place…I think that when a recording can do that, it overcomes some of the limitations that may be present. • Soundboard 9.3 - This is, for me, a real revelation. I never knew anything of this band outside of their lone smash hit “My Sharona”, which incidentally happens to hearken me back to a very specific time and place of my youth when this song blasted from every radio every 10 minutes. Listening to this show, I am stunned at how excellent the band is, and how good ALL of the songs are. How they remained pigeonholed and forgotten as another 1 hit wonder it just amazes me because they should have been more than that. I could not stop playing this once I started…I was on board for the whole ride and will do it again! THE KNACK THE FORUM INGLEWOOD, CA 1980-03-30 01. Baby Talks Dirty 02. Your Number Or Your Name 03. • Audience 8.3 - Limitations with the microphone is probably what prevents this recording from blossoming as it sometimes seems like it wants to do. You can hear it, for instance, during some of the passages, but I think the overloading of the bass crowds out the guitar a bit too much (although you can hear guitar, just not in a clear and detailed manner). Drums and keyboards dominate with a very insistent, pulsing bass undercurrent throughout. Does that count this out?  Not at all, due to the disparity of live BJH recordings, I think this one is worth exploring. The compositions and playing make up for the limitations on the tape. • Audience 8.4 - Not a high fidelity recording, sounding almost like an AM radio broadcast, but it gets a good sound review because it’s got clear guitar and bass (some tape hiss) and vocals are very clear. When a new tape pops up from such an early vintage you always immediately suspect it will be muddy crap so it’s a pleasant surprise to hear that it is decent. I like this show too, it’s a regular tour stop but the band is out to prove a point – and that point is that Led Zeppelin is not the only great English heavy rock band touring the States. • Soundboard 9.4 & Audience 8.6 - the first few discs are excellent soundboard which is cool because they are very early performances and there’s a lot to dive into there. The next couple of discs are good audience tapes, the first being a bit towards the back of a medium sized club, but it’s not bad. Overall it’s an interesting collection, really allows you to contemplate the artists changes over time, with band members, and compositions. Good stuff! • Audience 8.6 - Not a bad tape at all, and seeing how there’s now all of what, one known live tape of this band I would say that is kind of cool. The band?  Well they are in their final incarnation here, and playing is very loose and experimental…but honestly they needed to ditch the flautist as he contributes not only nothing, but he’s in the way. Let the guitarist do his thing ‘cause he seems to be able to turn on the switch and lay down bursts of awesome psychedelic insanity. • This collection has been remastered and despite that, there are still one or two tracks that show the ravages of time. One can only assume some of it was not saved, as was the BBC’s policy of not giving a shit, therefore it was up to fans to record from a radio broadcast themselves. Most of this does sound very good, a worthy effort for sure and some of this I’d never heard before. The Who - BBC Sessions 1965-1971 {Remastered & Complete} Disc 1 01. Good Lovin' 02. 'Pete interview #1' 03. Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere 04. Leaving Here 05. Just You and Me, Darling 06. 'Pete interview #2' Recorded: Aeolian Hall studio 2, Bond Street, London UK; Monday 24 + Tuesday 25 May 1965 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Saturday Club': Saturday 29 May 1965 Producers: Jimmy Grant/Brian Willey Sources: transcription disc Notes: The Who's second session for the BBC actually appears to have been a double-date. On the 24th, a three-hour session produced: 'Good Lovin'', 'Anyway Anyhow Anywhere', 'I Don't Mind' and 'Daddy Rolling Stone'. The next afternoon they performed: 'Leaving Here', 'Please Please Please' and 'Just You and Me, Darling'. The sessions tapes were wiped and the selections here are all that has survived on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription discs #31 & #34. The song selection here is dominated by soul covers picked by Roger, who was still the undisputed leader of the group. Yet, it was Pete who got to do the interviews and talk about the group's beginnings and prospects. 07. The Good's Gone 08. 'Pete interview' 09. My Generation 10. La La La Lies 11. Baby Don't You Do It Recorded: Aeolian Hall studio 1, Bond Street, London UK; Monday 22 November 1965 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Saturday Club': Saturday 27 November 1965 Producers: Jimmy Grant/Brian Willey Sources: 01-04 transcription disc; 05 off-air recording Note: The third session was again recorded live in studio and produced completed takes of: 'It's Not True', 'The Good's Gone', 'La La La Lies', 'My Generation' and 'Baby Don't You Do It'. The sessions tapes were wiped and the selections here are all that has survived on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #57 and an off-air recording made by a fan. By now, Pete's role as the main provider of song material has been firmly established. 12. Man With Money 13. 'Pete interview' 14. Substitute 15. Dancing In the Street 16. You Rang Recorded: Aeolian Hall studio 1, Bond Street, London UK; Tuesday 15 March 1966 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Saturday Club': Saturday 19 March 1966 Producers: Jimmy Grant/Brian Willey Sources: 01-04 transcription disc; 05 off-air recording Note: For this fourth session, the band recorded: 'Barbara Ann', 'Substitute', 'You Rang', 'Man with Money' and 'Dancing In The Street'. The sessions tapes were once again wiped and the selections here are all that has survived on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #73 and an off-air recording made by a fan. 17. 'Intro' 18. Disguises 19. 'Pete interview' 20. I'm A Boy 21. So Sad About Us Recorded: Playhouse Theatre, Northumberland Avenue, London UK; Tuesday 13 September 1966 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Saturday Club': Saturday 17 September 1966 Producers: Jimmy Grant/Brian Willey Source: transcription disc Note: Fifth session, which produced: 'I'm A Boy', 'Disguises', 'Heatwave', 'So Sad About Us' and a cover of the Lovin' Spoonful's 'On The Road Again'. The sessions tapes were wiped and the selections here are all that has survived on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #99. In an attempt to control the mixing balance, John suddenly turned his bass up in the middle of 'Disguises'. The balance engineer on the session did not bother correcting this and as a result the sound turns into a muddy mess from that point on (with the mixdown compressor working on overload). 'So Sad About Us' was left off the official 'BBC Sessions' release from 2000 for unknown reasons. 22. Run Run Run 23. Boris The Spider 24. 'Pete interview' 25. Happy Jack 26. See My Way Recorded: Playhouse Theatre, Northumberland Avenue, London UK; Tuesday 17 January 1967 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Saturday Club': Saturday 21 January 1967 Producers: Jimmy Grant/Bill Bebb Source: transcription disc Note: For this sixth session, the band recorded: 'Happy Jack', 'Run, Run, Run', 'Boris The Spider', 'See My Way', 'Don't Look Away' and 'So Sad About Us'. The sessions tapes were once again wiped and the selections here are all that has survived on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #117. Disc 2 01. 'Intro' 02. I Can See For Miles 03. Pictures Of Lily 04. Summertime Blues 05. I Can't Reach You 06. Our Love Was 07. A Quick One (While He's Away) 08. Relax 09. My Generation - Boris The Spider - Happy Jack - My Generation 10. Pictures of Lily [Alternate Mono Mix] Recording & Broadcast Production: De Lane Lea Studio, Kingsway, London UK; Tuesday 10 October 1967 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Top Gear'; Sunday 15 October 1967 Producers: Bernie Andrews/Bev Philips Sources: 01-02,07,09-10: tape 03-06: transcription disc w/ patches from tape sources 08: off-air recording Note: This seventh session marked the first time the BBC allowed any musical act to record for them outside their own studios. Recorded on this day were five jingles, 'My Way' (not broadcast) and alternate versions of 'Pictures Of Lily' & 'A Quick One While He's Away'. Also readied for the broadcast were early mixes of 'I Can See For Miles'*, 'Relax', 'Our Love Was', 'I Can't Reach You', 'Summertime Blues' & 'Someone's Coming'. These songs were already recorded on an earlier date and would eventually appear on official Who product with a slightly different mix (although it took more than 30 years for 'Summertime Blues'). This is the first Who BBC session that has at least partially survived on tape on the BBC archives, as the jingles and 'A Quick One' do not appear on copies of "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #157 & #160, yet appear in crystal clear quality on the official release. Strangely enough, the two TOTP discs seem to have been the source for the other tracks on the official CD, all of which are marred by a voiceover. The versions here are uninterrupted from start to finish (with the exception of the ending of 'Our Love Was'), for the first time ever. As a bonus, I have added a clean mono mix of 'Lily' with better fidelity than the BBC source which has not circulated before. * The 45RPM & BBC versions both contain a heavy bass dub that was imposed on the mono album master. The dubs differ, to ensure the BBC got a unique master recording. 11. 'Pete interview' 12. Pinball Wizard Broadcast: BBC TV 'Top of the Pops'; Tuesday 27 March 1969 Source: transcription disc Note: Roger/Pete(?) sing along with studio version. Part of the interview has appeared on a bonus disc that came with a limited edition of the official 2000 release. Tracks are sourced from "Top of the Tops" transcription discs #232 & #233. 13. 'David Wigg interviews Pete Townshend' Source: transcription disc Note: Sourced from "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #289 (released 20-5-1970). 14. John forced a re-shoot after the director did not include a shot of him in the first take. Sourced from "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #283. 15. I'm Free 16. The Seeker 17. Heaven And Hell 18. Shakin' All Over - Spoonful (Medley) 19. Substitute 20. Pinball Wizard Recorded: IBC Studios, London UK; Monday 13 April 1970 Broadcast: BBC Radio 'Dave Lee Travis'; Sunday 19 April 1970 Producer: Paul Williams Source: 01-04: transcription disc w/ patches from tape sources 05-06: tape Note: The last formal band session for the Beeb and again recorded outside an official BBC studio. 'Heaven and Hell' was later released in a slightly reworked version as a B-side to 'Summertime Blues'. Like the October 1967 session, this one is believed to have survived on tape on the BBC archives. But even so, the official album used the "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #286 as its source for Tr. 01-04, with voiceover over the intro's and outro's. The versions presented here are uninterrupted from start to finish (with the exception of 'Seeker') for the first time. 21. 'Keith Altham talks to Pete Townshend' Source: transcription disc Note: Sourced from "Top of the Tops" transcription disc #304 (released 2-9-1970). 22. I Don't Even Know Myself Recorded: Olympic Studio, Barnes, London UK; 1971 Source: tape Note: This one is a bit of a mystery. No details about it are given on the official BBC session CD. It is the same take that was released in 1971 as the B-side to 'Won't Get Fooled Again' but here we get a clean mono mix that differs in a few places from the released version. Believed to have been recorded in 1971 during the Who's Next sessions.
  • Audience 8.6 - In contrast to the Finland show, this one doesn't have the boominess but it is thinner sounding, however it is very clear and Kay is much more audible. Guitar, drums, and vocals very clear albeit thin. I found the bass to be lovely, round, very cool to hear such detail! This is NOT a muddy recording, and being 1970 that means you get the classic songs performed close to the records. • Miami 2019 Audience 8.8 - Tremendous atmosphere while retaining good and clear sound. It’s understandable being that the band plays enormous stadiums that you may have problems getting a solid capture, but provided that you aren’t in the nose bleeds, and your gear is decent, you can really get something worthwhile on tape with PA systems being so good. This is one such job. Charlie’s last gig with The Stones, and thankfully a good capture of the event. • Studio Quality 9.6 - Make no mistake, as I once did, that just because this was the Stones entering the era of “disco” and experimentation, it is very much a bona fide Rolling Stones album and these sessions prove that they still jammed old school on every song. It’s an eye opener for me, when I hear the musicianship across a lot of songs I dismissed early on or never properly examined, I have new appreciation for the Emotional Rescue album and that period of the band. • Mahavishnu Orchestra Central Park 1972 Audience 8.6 - A somewhat percussive recording that has loads of middle band punch making for a sound that contains fierce kinetic energy. The performance is astounding, the recording adds an element of immediacy, with the drums especially sounding like they are placed right next to you. Very cool. Mahavishnu Orchestra Munchen 1972 Professional TV audio 9.3 - This is a nice one, and it is not suffering from TV compression although the “atmosphere” here is somewhat muted as if it was in a studio setting and not live in front of an audience. Either way, no bother, it’s great. Mahavishnu Orchestra Disc 1 Central Park N.Y.C. New York, U.S.A. • Audience 8.7 - A good recording with what seems to be a little middle band compression but not too much. So, it’s smooth low end and louder upper middle and highs but softer middle band, that is not necessarily bad, it’s just lacking in that punch factor. It is though, as stated, a pretty decent recording. Oh, and the last song of the evening is “Don’t Fear The Reaper” so VERY cool to hear another live version of that. You know why BOC fans love the live recordings? Because with 5 guitar players at any given time, you just want to hear what they do with these amazing songs on stage. • Black Sabbath Los Angeles 1980 Audience 8.9 - This is a much welcomed recording of perhaps the best post Ozzy era of Black Sabbath. 1980 was an interesting year, Ozzy making classic “solo” albums with his new band and Sabbath beginning a new era with a new singer in Ronnie James Dio and neither the worse for it.  This is a great show, in great quality. Black Sabbath Vienna 1980 Audience 8.3 -Unfortunately this recording suffers from many ailments, mainly in the range and dynamics, but what it does offer is a previously uncirculated (and complete) show from Sabbath in Europe during the very crucial 1980 tour with Dio as new front man. This is what I get from this show- Dio is very committed to bringing the audience in to the spectacle…the performance is killer in every respect. The sound quality is not trash, but I want Dio more clear than this because he is really on his game this night. I think this tape belongs in this set because it doesn’t have to be the centerpiece of the set, it offers the collector a new tape of a complete show from 1980 and that is enough for me. • Soundboard 9.6 - Fantastic sound and even better performance here. Look, I know Skynyrd had a lock on all things Southern Rock for most of the 70’s, but can we agree that Molly Hatchet carried the torch admirably into the 80’s?  They did. Here is proof. • Audience 8.9 - A good, clear, and very strong recording. The percussion is crisp and detailed, all of the music is well balanced, Prince vocals are mixed above all which is great. • Audience 8.7 - This is a “realistic” sounding tape, by that I don’t mean it sounds like it was recorded on a Realistic tape machine, rather it sounds like what your ears may have heard had you been at the show sitting towards the back of the hall. Is that bad?  Not necessarily, because the tape sounds pleasing to the ears. Good, round, atmospheric…only flaw is the detail is missing. I can’t make out individual band members except the main gultars, bass, drums, and vocals. Other instruments come and go during the show as they get a spotlight on them, but I rate this show as very good because it’s so relaxing and pleasant overall and deserves a real deep dive into its contents. • Soundboard 8.9 - Kinda cool when you get these board tapes that pan a guitar, and then one other lead instrument to the other side, which in this case is keyboards. I think this allows for an examination of the instrument in question, so you might find yourself listening once and concentrating on guitar, then another time you’ll give drums and keys more attention…and that is why this show might have you coming back several times for more.  Interesting! • Atlanta 1977 Audience 8.6 - At times the tape shines (quieter sections) but for the louder parts (most of the concert) the bass overtakes guitar, and the bass is not boomy so it is not an annoying thing it’s more of a live mix thing. Clarity is very good but not great, frequencies are all intact here, the sound can breathe a little, it’s not a bad tape and it is not a great tape…and I think the consensus is that you would benefit from having it in the collection. Louisville 1977 Audience 8.7 - The sound here borders on distortion but manages to stay within a sane level of tolerance due to exceptional re-mastering (which is so difficult, to keep highs and mids but lose clipping, it’s a task I would not want myself). If taper was able to manage his levels, this would have been one of the best audience tapes of all time…you can hear the quality, but yeah, some problems there with the upper level distortion keep it as a very good tape as opposed to extremely great. Still, I have to say this is well worth having. Milwaukee 1977 Audience 8.2 - This is the kind of tape that is hard to get through without needing some major adjusting. I can tell you only that even after careful re-mastering, it is still an average tape with some decent moments but mostly difficult on the ears. It’s saving grace?  It’s a brand new discovery, and is only popping up for the first time since it was first recorded. I enjoyed the quieter parts (such as Wish You Were Here, and the acoustic portions of the Pigs suites).
