Audience 7.3 - The sound field just won’t open up no matter how much you hope it will. However, this tape holds some rewards if you hang in there, there’s enough head room to sweeten the sound with Equalizer, so it does need a little boost on the highs – the mids and lows are all there and are not super well defined nor are they too boomy or muddy. There’s some muddiness but it is not a deal breaker. This is a good historic artifact. -
Audience 8.8 - Sounds like a pro recording to me. A little remastering would have this officially releasable. -

Italy Prog Fest 1972: Volume 1,2,3 Audience 7.5 - The stuff that dreams are made of! How long I have waited for something like this to materialize. I mean, I have been listening to and collecting these bands for ages and now I get to hear a full on multi-artist concert experience by all of the era’s top artists at the zenith of the prog rock movement. How cool is that? What a set this is too! The quality of presentation equals the unquestionable importance of this as a document of an important time for rock music. Thank you to whoever recorded this, and thank you to whoever packaged the recording like this. -

Audience 8.8 - Every now and then a tape surfaces that really gets you excited as a collector. This one is just such a tape, because for one thing not only is the quality very good, but it’s super nice on the ears. What I mean is, the timbre of the recording is very comfortable, so it’s easy to listen to the entire show there is no fatigue on the ears at all. The icing on the cake is having both opening acts in the same kind of quality, in complete form. So, what more could you ask for? Audience 5.0 - Low fi, but so few good recordings from the early days. The lead work is the clearest sound on this, vocals non-existent. Can appreciate the dual guitars on this even though it is low-fi. -
Iron Maiden - Tour of Japan 1982: (complete set) Volume One: Audience 7.4 - Thankful for these Japanese tapers who had the best gear at the time. Reasonably clear if a little squashed, it nevertheless is way better than 85% of the early Maiden audience recordings. Volume Two: Audience 7.6 - Just a touch better than Volume one, suffers from the same limitations but has a slightly more open sound. Volume Three: Audience 8.4 - This is best of the tour by far. St. Austell 1980 Audience 8.4 - In the pantheon of early Maiden live recordings this one is far from the worst, in fact I would say it’s worth a good listen because one thing is a grimy, muddy old tape and another is a relatively good tape that is NOT muddy but maybe does not have a wide dynamic range…and I’ll take the latter every time.

Audience 8.9 - This is what I consider the best audience tape from the Somewhere In Time Tour. It’s got loads of atmosphere but not at the expense of the “directness” of the PA to the mic. It’s a realistic sound, this tape replicates exactly what your ears heard coming out of the PA at this show…without artifacts to detract. Get this!

FM Broadcast 8.8 A tape recorded off air sounding its age but surprisingly it’s actually decent enough that fans of this venerable band will rejoice at hearing such an early gig in very good quality. If you compare it to a typical FM broadcast you’ll be less ecstatic, but I tell you this: in the year 1982 there were few bands that could match the intensity and precision of Iron Maiden. Audience 7.0 - Kind of like the Rainbow show, it is clear and one of the other decent early shows from an audience source. Again, not much bottom end here, but you can hear all instruments clearly. -
Audience 8.7 - So let me put it this way – the recording is not perfect, but is near perfect for someone who needs to try and understand what makes Iron Maiden special. This captures a night, just another night (in fact this was a stand of shows at the Radio City Music Hall) on a long, never ending tour for the band but they play as if it was their last show. It’s amazing how night after night, town after town, tour after tour, Iron Maiden never gives a bad performance. I love this capture even though it suffers a few bumps and bruises, because it’s in the trenches from the hardcore fans perspective, it’s as if the taper is working as hard to capture the gig as the band is in delivering it. I LOVE it, and once I started playing this, I could not stop. I think you’ll love it too. FM Radio Broadcast 8.9 - This is not a typical radio broadcast, it is very raw and in-your-face loud! That makes it much more enjoyable to me. The kick drum and bass are nicely present in this mix – but are not boomy or obnoxious so this is a great way to hear instrumentation normally not very defined. Pro 9.9 - this is unbelievably solid. Everything is in the pocket, which is awfully hard to do with a metal band. Every instrument, and the crowd mixed in to provide atmosphere. This had to be a broadcast, but it’s not from a broadcast it has to be a pre-broadcast master. I mean, it’s almost perfect. Audience 7.2 - A very desirable early Maiden show because it is one of the better sounding audience recordings. Very few early Maiden shows are well recorded. This one suffers from lack of bottom end but it is rather clear and thus it is sought out by collectors. -
Audiece 7.0 - Loud and noisy, but Maiden fans know all too well the kind of lo-fi muddy sound most of the early recordings suffer from, that’s why this is welcome. It is not nearly as horrid as most, in fact in places this is actually pretty decent. You do get a great feel of the hall, and the energy level, and even though it is a tad crunchy you do get most of the band. -

Audience 8.4 - Buried in a closet for decades this important document has finally surfaced. It’s, to my ears, slightly better than the next oldest live document which I believe is the Music Machine gig. The tape itself is not as bad as you’d imagine and that could be due to the diligent re-mastering that was done. The sound is not as murky and indecipherable as a lot of the other 1980 tapes. This can be appreciated, I mean, this is May of 1980 the band had yet to break open and even though they had a hardcore following, was not known outside of UK in any substantive sense. If you were a fan of Iron Maiden in these times, it’s akin to investing money in Google stock when it was first offered. Why would you? …maybe because you liked what they were doing and had a hunch. Audience 8.7 - While this tape may not enjoy the same clarity as some of the Japan 82 recordings, it does have a good powerful delivery nonetheless. Vocals come through the clearest, but the combination of bass, and guitars follows with the force of a piledriver to your skull...and I rather like it. Audience 8.1 - Not only is this incredibly important in the Maiden’s history but it’s also very listenable too. That is gotta qualify as a rarity! Audience 8.9 - Taper was seated 15 rows back so this recording gets you a good clear image of the event. Being an outdoor venue, there is occasional “wind” effect that does not really bother. A solid capture! -
Audience 9.3 - Way better than what you might expect. I was pleasantly surprised to hear how clean and rather detailed this tape is. I feel like I saved some money not having to buy a ticket to the show, but even though I missed them on tour, with tapes like these I can travel in time to Italy and relive this most excellent gig! Audience 6.3 - There is music here, buried under time and dust. Understanding that we have a limited number of pre-Bruce era tapes, and that most of those sound horrid, it is suggested one must hunt down the ones that have been mastered like this one. -
Audience 8.7 - It’s hard to screw up a recording when you have good equipment and decent seats, unless you fall asleep and drop the recorder on the floor. This crew didn’t, and the results are very good to the ears. -

Audience 9.4 - This is a revelation for me. I was not too familiar with the band and always assumed they were just another “Neo Prog” band from the 80’s. Boy am I wrong! This is KILLER! The audio quality is thankfully excellent and bright so as to capture the insane complexity and brilliance of this band. Sure, there’s going to be obvious attempts to compare them to other bands but to my ears they had something unique going, while also tipping the cap to bands like Marillion, Genesis, and UK. The amount of ideas going on in each song is beyond belief.
