Studio 8.7 - A little sonic degradation to these professional studio demos (the bonus tracks are abbreviated probably due to legal reasons at the time they were recorded). Some of the tracks are better quality, but the worst are still very good, just maybe a little loss of clarity and fidelity but nothing major. You’ll enjoy this if you are a fan. -
Audience 8.9 - A slight improvement over the 1st night recording, but only by the narrowest margin. I do hear more keys, but they tend to “blast” a bit here. Audience 8.8 - A very decent recording for the vintage. Small club atmosphere permeates which gives this recording the legendary status it deserves. A collection of rare, never before issues tracks originating from Texas during the 1970's. Featuring a handful of demos produced by the group Truck, a band who slipped under the radar and whose music remained undiscovered for decades. The rest of the disc is rounded out by some known and some very obscure acts, some so obscure we do not even know what their name is! These tracks were discovered on an old forgotten multi-track reel that was owned by Ernie Myers (guitarist of Hands out of Dallas, TX.). Studios would frequently reuse reels to save costs, and this particular reel was no exception Tracks were discovered on the end of the reel that was used to record some demos in 1980. All that we know of the band are the first names of the members written on a track sheet inside the tape box. The recordings originated out of a studio called JD&D Sound...and that's it. The music is excellent! -
Audience 8.8 - What this tape shows is that Vanilla Fudge were loud as hell on stage. That Hammond organ, it filled every square molecule of space with massive sound. No other bands at the time were using an organ quite like this! But, it’s fun to hear, if a little dated perhaps. A loud tape that barely stays together at full volume but miraculously manages to capture the event in good form. Vanilla Fudge .... Audience 8.8 - A very good recording here, and the atmospherics are plentiful. There’s a natural reverb going on that adds another dimension to this, and I mean that in a good way. Lovely! Pro Soundboard 9.1 - Recorded for broadcast in a studio setting so you know it is going to be really good. Tape is just a touch “aged” in that it is not as bright as you would expect but still darn good. -
Audience 9.0 - This is a very fine recording no doubt about it, although there is some kind of audio artifact present at the extreme high almost like it might be from the main microphone (stage mic). So, I don’t think it is the tape, or taper’s gear. At first you may think it is almost like a noise reduction artifact but it is not that which you will agree when you hear the electric guitars. That’s probably the only thing you can knock this for, but even that is rather minor, the music is very present, great live mix too. Soundboard 9.5 - Wow! Man, this is totally unexpected and will brighten your day (week, or month even!) like nothing else. A brand new discovery and it's a one/two punch with back to back soundboard recordings of Diver Down tour Van Halen, a tour that previously featured a measley two board tapes in existence. Well, it's not a perfect score, but the imperfections are a tiny price to pay for the glorious sounds present here! Each tape in slightly incomplete, but in places that the other show fills in so you end up hearing the music that makes up a complete Diver Down tour setlist. Basically, the sound engineer most likely had to stop rolling in certain spots in order to make tape changes, but all you have to do is look at each nights set list to see how it shakes out, and, thankfully some good editing has smoothed over some of the stops. As I listened, if I hadn't known there were cuts, I probably would not have been the wiser, basically unless you know where the cuts are you won't notice. But, the SOUND man! The sound is great, I really get to hear Michael Anthony's articulate bass playing, and he's all over the place with fills and runs! You kind of lose that detail in most Van Halen recordings. Eddie is just lighting it up as always, but it sounds especially amazing on these two tapes. The interplay is magic, I don't care if the band had their shortcomings personally, with each other, with whoever, it doesn't show on stage. Somebody get me a doctor, I just got double dosed with prime era Van halen soundboards I've never heard before! What an unbelievable find.

5.1 - Sounds like it was recorded on a cheap old cassette recorder. No low end, squeaky sounding...but, historically significant recording. Bonus tracks sound excellent. -
Audience 8.4 - I expected more from a post 2000 audience recording, but this one is decend just seems to be toward the back of the hall. You do get all instruments, and mixed properly, with pretty much Eddie and DLR being the clearest and out front. Solos sound good as they seem to swirl around the room giving it a cool atmosphere. The show does seem to get better as it goes, might even boost the rating another .3 for the slight improvement. -
Audience 8.7 - Solid! Good presence, great clarity with just occasional moments where maybe someone walks in front of the mic. A nice “live” atmosphere makes for a very enjoyable show. -
