  • Audience 9.3 - Legendary Mike “The Mic” Millard recording and what a sparkling one it is. It’s hard to place Yes’s music into any sort of time frame because it is timeless, therefore a good 1991 show is just as “good” as a 1971 show, meaning as you listen you realize there’s no real difference in that the 1991 show might as well be the band during any time frame because it’s just as good. YES – Decades 1970-1980 (Deluxe Metal Canister 11 CD)

Original price was: $85.00.Current price is: $70.00.
This set was assembled with both the hardcore collector and casual collector in mind. The variety of material that will appeal to longtime Yes collectors is the immediate standout feature, aside from the beautiful design of the canister itself. Now, let this be the one and only disclaimer: The inclusion of the Dallas 1972 show, even though it may be considered below the high standards set by collectors of this venerable progressive rock band, was too important to not acknowledge here because, as you know, we lost Alan White not that long ago and the Dallas '72 gig was his first with the band. It's also kind of interesting to hear how well he did with only a couple of days to learn the challenging material. The rest of the set is an excellent combination of stuff guaranteed to keep you interested throughout the entire set. Highlights include the new to circulation Providence 1976 which is an excellent sounding tape, and the demos/alternates from Time And A Word. • Soundboard 9.1 - Fantastic! I’ve always known there was something recorded at the famous Whiskey-A-Go-Go by the band but had never run across it until now. It’s a nice and relaxed show with great guitar interplay (as usual) and tight backing (listen to Berry’s bass solo it’s on point). • Audience 8.8 - This is a real surprise, for this early vintage you do not expect anything really good especially out of the Music Hall but I have news for you – this is a good, good tape. Of course it is going to have that almost cavernous kind of quality but  regardless it’s a really clear sound and one that shows off each member of the band and offers at the same time a feeling of time and place. • Audience 8.9 - Two different evenings in Boston, each three years apart. For one thing, it's a well balanced capture all the way around (both gigs). Hearing the differences between stadium acts performing in '74 and then in '77 reveals subtle changes in music and delivery. I like being able to notice things like that and sets like this really allow the listener to immerse themselves in their own analytics as they listen. The sound is very good especially because a well done remastering job refreshed the tapes. I love this, this is a treat for people who wished they got to hear the opening acts too but tapers seldom saved tape for them. • Audience 8.8 - This came as a total surprise as I never knew it existed…and man, I gotta tell ya this is f’kin AWESOME!  This is a band that is crucial to the burgeoning British punk movement but they owe more to the MC5 than the Sex Pistols. This one off show features the band going under the moniker The Doomed because they have a certain Lemmy Kilmister on bass. What a high energy, totally wild and crazy fun gig too! Good sound quality, thankfully!  Great setlist with a nice handful of covers that highlight their influences (they even do Silver Machine from Hawkwind!). • Audience 8.9 - A recording that seems to be, if I had to guess, somewhere mid crowd but manages to bring you closer to the action. Great separation of instruments and a clear capture with zero tape noise so you can almost hear the pot smoke swirling above your head ha ha!  But, this is quite good, and mesmerizing, so have a great trip as you put your time machine headphones on and set it to Seattle in ’76. • Audience 9.3 - This tape reminds me very much of the excellent Osaka 84 recording, it’s bright and atmospheric. I gave this one a very high rating because it’s right up there with the Osaka show. • Audience 8.7 - This is a really nice and rare treat. I have been collecting every known Toronto show by Rush and this fills a nice place in the 70’s portion…and wow man I gotta say the quality is surprising since most of the other 70’s tapes are really not that great. I am not saying this is sparkling minty fresh, but it’s much more clear and present than the others and that is good for us because this is the earliest known AFTK performance and features tracks yet to be released. • Audience 8.7  - This tape has one thing really going for it, and that is it is surprisingly clear, maybe not super close to the stage but that means there’s no distortion…there’s also no boominess, and there’s some good live atmosphere. The mix is decent, and overall this tape can be really enjoyed by anyone but let me tell you why I love it – because they play my fave Thin Lizzy song “Opium Trail” so there ya go. • Soundboard 9.2 & Audience 9.7 - Right away you are going to question this rating. Most of you will be familiar with the ’69 set as it is well traveled and professionally recorded and as such has a purity about it. Now, I like it, I like the purity and clarity and all of that, but just listen to the raw audience tape from 1972 and then tell me it doesn’t deserve the rating I give it. If you don’t hear the unbridled intensity, the electricity zapping the entire stadium and coming through your speakers directly into your head at full throttle, than just stop collecting right now and take up another hobby, maybe crochet or something. • Audience 8.8 - This rates highly as a new audio tape discovery from decades ago you might have low expectations but it’s a good, clear (but for Alice being a little low in the mix) and I would say powerful show in sound and performance. • Soundboard 8.7 - The mix here tends to lean on a darker side (meaning more low end but not boomy) with guitar being clear enough but not the prominent instrument which is fine as this is totally all about ensemble and vastly different than anything he was doing with Deep Purple. That in itself makes this kind of odd, if he’s touring with Deep Purple yet managed to play some gigs with other people and sound so totally different musically, it’s really a zig zag routine here as the music is so all over the place in a good way. • Audience 8.7 A real surprise here because when I first came across this one I assumed it would be crap. • FM Broadcast 9.4 - This could be considered as one of the best live documents of the band I have ever heard. While there is the faintest amount of FM static in the background during quiet parts, this does not distract in any way the absolute mastery of music that this band delivered. Just stunning, and I can imagine how many young musicians must have been inspired after hearing this band live. Do yourself a favor and grab this, it’s phenomenal. • Audience 8.8/9.1 - Two pretty good recordings with the second evening (July 4th) having the benefit of much more high end definition and overall clarity, with soaring headroom that makes for a generally relaxing listen, so you’ll tend to favor it more but that is not saying July 3rd is bad, it’s actually also very decent just not as clear and defined as the 4th. • Audience 8.7 - So let me put it this way – the recording is not perfect, but is near perfect for someone who needs to try and understand what makes Iron Maiden special. This captures a night, just another night (in fact this was a stand of shows at the Radio City Music Hall) on a long, never ending tour for the band but they play as if it was their last show. It’s amazing how night after night, town after town, tour after tour, Iron Maiden never gives a bad performance. I love this capture even though it suffers a few bumps and bruises, because it’s in the trenches from the hardcore fans perspective, it’s as if the taper is working as hard to capture the gig as the band is in delivering it. I LOVE it, and once I started playing this, I could not stop. I think you’ll love it too. • Audience 9.5 - Astounding! Not just for the excellent sound but the dynamics are so present here, you get lush, rich lows and then all the way up through the spectrum including detailed but not sizzling highs. • Soundboard 9.2 - This is the only known board tape from 1975. It’s very good, I find no real problems other than occasional drop outs, and it’s maybe a little distracting here and there but I don’t think it kills the fun. • Soundboard 9.7 - This is the one to get if you want to hear this band at arguably the peak of their powers. Sounding like a flashier, somewhat more progressive version of Iron Maiden to these ears, but whoa nelly there is a whole lot of premium quality musicianship happening and it is happening in fantastic quality. Most recording of busy, progressive metal groups simply have a hard time mixing the different instruments in such a way as to deliver the punch without over-killing it and destroying the integrity of the sound. This recording is brilliant because it doesn’t do that, and I honestly have never heard live early Queensyche in this manner before and it is a thrill, it’s a MUST have if you have even a passing interest. • Audience 9.2 - What immediately strikes you about this recording is that Rick Wright’s synth sounds and effects are NOT window dressing! In fact, they are almost overwhelmingly loud at times during the concert. Now, what I like most about old recordings is when they reveal something to me I never knew – in this case I did not know or appreciate how much Rick’s work, however consequential during the song, was not mixed out or down by any stretch but you might think that judging on the myriad hundreds of tapes that exist that do not give you a true appreciation of the volume.  This tape is insistent, relentless, and thankfully clear and dynamic. The middle and upper midrange is sometimes almost too much but never does it distort. Get ready for a front row earschplittenloudenboomer! • An absolute beast of a canister! Loaded down with 14 discs, it's quite the experience as you follow the Who on tour in the States in 1980. For the most part, all of the recordings reside in the mid to upper 8's on the 1-10 scale, with a couple coming in at over 9.0 (Essen, for instance). I found it to be very satisfying as all of the songs I enjoy hearing them play are represented, without the overindulgence into Tommy...finally! The material is compelling, the band is tight and very convincing although they needed some work on their stage banter ha ha!  Very cool indeed! • Soundboard 9.3 - An interesting tape because it’s from soon after losing Duane, and I don’t think there’s many tapes from that period immediately after his death. • Stuttgart 1970 Audience 9.1 - A sometimes startling tape in that in certain sections of the performance you could swear the effects are swirling right over your head. A clear (with a little hiss but not a bother) and highly enjoyable tape! Saarbrucken 1970 Audience 9.3 - A tape that has tremendous depth, really if you play it loud you can imagine you are there. There is nothing about this tape, and show, that I do not love. • Soundboard 9.3 - I was unfamiliar with the live sound of Stevie Wonder having only heard his studio output, I was happy to hear that he and his band really could jam. I’ll be exploring more live Wonder because of this show. • Audience 9.4 - This is a killer!  First, it’s new to circulation and second, it’s fantastic sounding. Taper was right in the sweet spot with excellent gear, got the whole show…and yup, it’s a wonderful performance so this one checks all the boxes. Yes Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA. • Audience 8.2 - A loud and raucous tape, with a band of noise in the upper mid frequency that prevents better separation of instruments. Saving grace?  Duane is the clearest instrument on this recording – in fact it is his guitar that soars over the sound to the degree that you almost inevitably focus solely on him throughout.  As it happens, Gregg’s vocals are next up in the mix.
