Audience 8.8 & 8.7 - Same taper for both nights, and thankfully this is someone who knew what they were doing as you can tell they diligently set their levels and position to maximize the end results, and man, what end results these are! More probably for the outstanding performance and great house mix, but the tapes have held up well with just maybe a touch of overload in very loud parts that do not annoy, just you may notice it on occasion. Great performances by the band especially Craig who just rips on the guitar on practically every song and even Grace is in excellent form. A must! -
Audience 8.5 - OK, so the deal here is that the taper seems to be real close to the PA system and his machine is getting bombasted like heck, but the thing is holding up somewhat. Early on, the snare drum is pegging his meters and it’s kind of annoying until he seems to either move a little or dial back the recording levels because it evens out after a couple songs. A very kinetic and wild show and recording that throws you headfirst into the action, a thrill ride of epic proportions I would say. Have fun! -

Audience 7.0 - A noisy tape that is to be expected from this time period and from a fan in the audience…that being said, it has something to offer to the collector. It’s a little distorted in the low frequencies which is OK because this band does not live on bottom end anyway. The guitar is pretty clear, so you get treated to the band’s formidable front line with vocals and bass coming in behind the guitars. -
Radio Broadcasts 8.7 - Contrary to what the title states, there is no Utica show, it was broadcast out of Utica but recorded elsewhere, two shows, two different dates – and the title should more technically be “Utica 1969/70” since the recordings date from those two years. -

Audience 7.8 - I love these little time capsules, maybe it’s not the best fidelity, but I can hear pretty much everything here and the bass is fat without distorting so it’s got some balls to it. You know, listening to things like this makes one really wish they had an actual time machine. -
Soundboard 9.2 - Still sounds as fresh and exciting today as it did then. Maybe just a tiny amount of “hot” mic but it only adds to the energy of this recording. Audience 8.3 - This recording originates from a very low generation, but probably master tape source and as such it is very clean. The caveat is that it seems to have been recorded from the back of the hall, which is not that bad since the hall was probably not that large. It’s a good recording that needs a volume boost, which thankfully you can crank it and it does not distort. -

Radio Broadcast 8.3 - A professional recording that could be better with some final mastering. Right now it sounds like it needs some multi-band compression but it is technically a good sounding tape. -

Audience 8.5 - Certainly has to be considered as one of the clearest of the ’68 aud recordings out there. The other great thing about this one is the performance is very good, Jeff is on point throughout the gig. -
Audience 7.4 - Noisy recording from very close to stage, but it’s so raw and energetic you get sucked into it immediately. A jolly good show! Clear, loud, and tons of fun to listen to. -
Audience 8.4 - This is the August ’72 show and the sound is pretty decent with clarity, average depth and dynamics but regardless it’s a very enjoyable listen. Perhaps it could be said this is one of the better ’72 tapes in circulation. -
Volume 3: Audience 7.6 - Bass is pumping at the expense of everything else unless the music pauses now and then which makes guitar front and center for a moment. It’s somewhat muddy, but you do hear everything happening, and the ears do adjust. It’s the worst of the three night stand. Good, at times, and worth having nonetheless. -
Volume 2: Audience 8.2 - Sounds like taper attended the first two nights and had different seats each time because this one, while pretty strong, shows a rather overloaded bass signal that does not distort the tape as much as it crowds the sound field in the middle. This places guitar secondary in the mix, and vocals third. Drums sound good. The overall mix is what I would call decent for 1969 audience but not as clear as the first night. -
Volume 1: Audience 8.4 - Very clear, especially Jeff, with Rod pushed to the background. Tends toward “shrill” with the cymbals but because it is a “hot” show with decent clarity we overlook some of the minor gripes. -
Audience 9.6 - As good as I have heard - clear as a bell, and full, up front, balanced sound. A must have! Audience 9.2 - This recording is very clean and very bright, it does not favor the bass but what you’ll find is that the guitar sounds like it’s right next to you (which for the taper maybe it was). Audience 9.0 - This is a very good recording that delivers most of what you need, but for someone who perhaps understands the nuances of sound they may have wished for hearing this from a little bit closer with more clarity. That is nitpicking though – I think this sounds very very decent. The main attraction is Jeff Beck’s guitar playing and Johnny Depp’s accompaniment and you get that all very nicely. Audience 8.6 - I don’t quite know what to make of this tape – it is very clear but with some kind of slight crispness in the middle to high band that suggests the microphone being used was not up to the task. That being said, it’s still a pretty good recording, and with a class mic it would have been a 9.0 or better. Well worth getting, that is my final assessment. Audience 9.2 - Both shows represented here are very similar and probably done by the same crew, in roughly the same vicinity because both are close to the P.A. (and not distorted!). In fact, both are exactly the kind of audience tapes I like the most – brutally powerful with just enough atmosphere to get the feel of the day. Audience 7.7 - A little crowded but at times it clears up a bit, it’s actually pretty decent and Jeff is very much up front in this one. Well worth getting. -
Audience 9.3 - Turn it up, it just gets better and better. A wide open stereo sound field lets the music breath and soar. -
CD 1 - Audience 8.4 - A lively, jumping tape that is a fun listen but the limitations include some minor over-saturation which surprisingly does not ruin anything, but keeps the rating in the mid 80’s technically speaking. I like this recording personally, I find it exhilarating! CD CD 2 - Audience 8.8 - A very well made recording with a great balance to it, a warmth and tone that is pleasing to the ears. Lovely! CD 3 - Audience 8.2 - A tape with a preponderance of low end, to the point where you can’t ignore it, not that it is particularly muddy, just that it is bass heavy. I do get the other instruments thankfully, but like I said…bass. CD 4 - Same as disc 3, but I will say this much, on songs where the bass work is minimized, it sounds excellent. -
Audience 8.4 - A pretty loud recording, and not super defined but it’s VERY good nonetheless and well worth hearing. It certainly has a very immediate and live feel to it, even after all these years it’s as if it happened yesterday. -
Audience 8.9 - One thing for certain, you can’t knock this recording for not having enough wide open and bright atmosphere! Holy crap it’s got that in spades, at maybe at a little expense of the lower register – although the bass is present in a sort of brassy and sassy kind of way. If you want to hear that guitar detail and don’t mind that the recording favors that sort of mid band/upper high range of sound and less emphasis on deep bottom end (most people would prefer not being overloaded with bass as it tends to muddy the sound) than you will like this a lot. I did not miss having phatness in the bottom end because I cranked up my bass on the EQ and lo-and-behold there was bass! Soundboard 8.9 - Great recording that is guitar centric with vocals a little behind the action. The June 15th fragment is a funky SDBRD feed with guitar panned hard right and vocals hard left. It’s also a bit harsh or I should say “biting” but it’s still a joy to hear. Jeff sounds incredible! -
Audience 8.8 - Another great tape made by someone obviously knowing what they were doing. There are a couple of cuts here and there, not deal breakers by any means but full disclosure. Anyway, a solid, in the pocket recording of a sizzling gig with great interplay between Jobson and Beck. -
Audience 7.8 - Good and clear but missing some fatness in the bottom. Still a good one and the band is hot. -
Audience 8.7 - a good recording with some signs of age, and a minor buzz that occurs only occasionally which is not related to the stage sound. Thankfully it’s not prominent during the actual music. The show itself is very tight, Beck is in good form. Very worthwhile! -
Audience 7.0 - Compressed, all squeezed up in the center…problem is there is just so precious few 1972 recordings and many consider this period to be very important in Beck’s career. -
Pro Studio 9.7 and SDBRD 9.4 - Only the cleanest and best source material is used in this set. I would recommend this as a good starting point for a 70’s era Jeff Beck collector. -
Audience 7.1 - A mediocre recording with some tape hiss present, and bass distortion that is present but thankfully is very minimal. Guitar work is great and is not buried in the mix. With some remastering this could be a lot better. The performance is worth the price of admission- definitely one of his better shows. -
New Haven 1975 Audience 9.0 - Nice one here, a lovely guitar tone that rings out clear and true, so close you can put yourself in tapers seats! Only heard one small drop out, there’s another somewhere else but I don’t recall. Only lasted a few seconds. Either way, this is truly an electrifying tape and I have to say I think it can be considered a must have. Tulsa 1975 Audience 8.6 -A recently re-mastered version has appeared, and thankfully so because this tape suffered serious hiss and muddiness before. Now, there’s some hiss remaining but not near as much, and layer after layer of muck has been removed revealing a fine tape, and a blistering performance. Detroit 1976 Audience 9.1 - Electric atmosphere, almost palpable as you settle into a great show by a guitar master. Band is hot, audience is responding…a great night for rock and roll! Audience 8.8 - The one thing that all the Japanese 78 audience tapes share in common is that the taper is A. Usually recording on some decent gear B. Usually sitting somewhere at least in the middle of the venue and not in the corner against the back wall and C. usually benefitting from quiet, respectful audiences (when they aren’t clapping during the songs as they did for the rock and roll acts of the time, thankfully I guess they afforded Jeff Beck a mostly non-clapping show with a few exceptions). This recording is pretty decent sounding, and I am sure it is going to sound even better once you tweak it to your liking at home.
