  • Soundboard 9.5 and Audience 7.8 - Well, there you have it. You go from first to worst, thankfully most of the show is the board tape which is stellar.  For the sake of completeness, the not so great audience source fills in the missing bits and I for one don’t mind that at all. I’d rather have the whole show. • Audience 8.7 - Recorded with reel to reel tape machine, this is actually very good although it begins with some fluctuations as the tapers settle in. They do an admirable job throughout as the tape stabilizes, they comment here and there but keep it to a minimum, as is the crowd noise. So, it’s a relaxing and enjoyable experience, the band sounding like they are not willing to sell out just yet as their set is not necessarily a top 40 showcase which is good actually. Some hits, but a lot of deep and meaningful music. • Audience 8.6 - A clear tape that EXPLODES from your speakers…but maybe because that is because the levels are really hot (but next to no distortion!) and it makes for a ridiculously electric sounding show. It’s like, man, I am here, my ears are melting and my mind is blowing! Way better than the previously circulating high gen tape, this is from the master reels and it shows. • Audience 8.4 - This is a welcome tape as far as I am concerned. Anything with Ian Gillan has my attention, and this show is much better than the Dublin gig, which I mention because it also contains the infrequently performed “Hot Line” so it’s a big win for fans. The vocals are really clear, and so is the crunchy guitar, with occasionally a little phasing effect but kept to a minimum. Not hi-fidelity, but very good and well worth having in the collection! • Pro Studio and Pro Live All four volumes are excellent start to finish and even though songs do appear on other releases, there are inevitably always some gems that turn up on these well produced comps that you don’t find elsewhere. I think this one is well worth the effort, and you can cherry pick the volumes or go all in, save some money, and by getting the complete set you get the cool track sheet that does not come with each volume separately. • Audience 8.2 - From tape source not LP, this recording has some tape hiss present, but it’s not overwhelming the music. Music sometimes seems a little muddy but then clears up a little then returns to a little muddy. It’s not bad though, it’s much better than most of the multi gen STP tour audience tapes out there. • A mix of various sources but I find overall quality to be very good to excellent. In fact, it's strange but there are better sounding tapes from '75 than there are for the following year. You'd think audio quality would get better each subsequent year...alas one only need to listen to most of the 1980's audience tapes to know that is simply not the case. • Audience 8.1 - Not only is this incredibly important in the Maiden’s history but it’s also very listenable too. • Soundboard 9.5 - So I haven’t kept up with this band since Steve Morse joined. I’ve always loved them, but they just fell off my radar. It was with great pleasure that I reacquainted myself with them as I reviewed this show. It’s multi-layered, multi-dimensional music with some resemblance to the old band if Ritchie traded places with his Southern fried twin brother!  I mean, it works, don’t get me wrong – but it can fool you because it’s not Ritchie’s band by any stretch. I like this one maybe a little better to be honest. This is a “deeper” Deep Purple actually, and the orchestra behind them makes it that much more interesting, if sometimes a little bit “cabaret” but it still rocks when it has to and the guitar work by Morse is impeccable. • Audience 8.3 - This is your standard “decent” sounding 70’s audience tape. It does not offer a wide dynamic range, although it is pretty clear and you hear every instrument and vocals above all of it  in good clarity (important when it comes to Free where vocals are a huge component). Nothing about this tape offends the ears sonically speaking. It could be argued by this time Free was sounding maybe a little tired, but that is subjective. • Soundboard 8.8 - A real surprise, and a real treat this one! The band is playing a college campus and having been on the road for a while their chops are all finely honed. It’s so nice to hear a tape where Terry’s guitar is articulate and clear and not buried in the mud. This is NOT a muddy tape, if you are getting tired of hearing all those muddy early 70’s tapes out there, this one is for you. Chicago Stephen F. • Audience 7.8 - A recent remastering job has brought out much more of the music in this tape. It once circulated for a while in unlistenable quality, which is why you are probably unfamiliar with it. Now, it was rescued from the original reel to reel it was recorded on and spruced up a bit. I can honestly say it is MUCH better! That is all relative of course to the actual sound of this tape – which is average even though it’s clearer than before by far. What is happening is the music is all blended together with only vocals riding over it, to where you get distinct definition on them but everything else is hard to decipher…I mean unless you aren’t counting stadium bass/drum sound. To be completely fair, I listened to most of this show and my ears did adjust, and I started to get more out of it. • Audience 8.3 - I find these early club dates fascinating. It sounds closer to Taste than anything he was doing on subsequent tours. The guitar work is more off the cuff, edgier maybe. This recording features a pretty clear and up-front guitar, with vocals next and kick drum following. It’s good, a little hiss present, but to have tapes like this to hear the early period Rory post-Taste is most welcome. • FM Broadcast 9.4 - This is sourced from a low gen tape source, and it sounds very clean, bright, precise. • Soundboard 8.9 - This is not the same Clapton of the ’74 comeback tour, this is much more cohesive, much better playing. • Soundboard 8.8 - The mix gets a little cluttered up at times, guitars being rather hot in this mix but I guess that is what you would prefer. The first disc is all BB King, the second disc is when Eric comes on to join for the remainder of the set. Eric Clapton with B.B. • Soundboard 9.3 - Not the typical sounding board mix here, it’s got a much more live sounding guitar sound, like mic’d a little further away giving it some spacial quality, and vocals same way, like they are not fed direct into the board. It’s just sounds different than most, not in a bad way, just different. • Audience 9.0 - I like the sound of this recording, it’s got a very nice and smooth bass which is pretty articulate, and the instruments in general are in perfect harmony with each other, you would be hard pressed to get a better mix even through the board. It’s also a historic concert, for the obvious reasons, and hearing it knowing what happened later, it adds another dimension. A great one! 04-12-1971 Montreux Casino, Switzerland 1. Intro, 2. • Audience 9.4 - This to me is what keeps me in the game. When I thought I had every 79 show (my favorite period) and this comes along…and….it…smokes…everything! Maybe not a perfect score in the audio dept. which by the way it is excellent (a little pegging of the meters when the band is in full on rage but it’s minor, a minor issue) but it delivers in just about every possible way. Frank’s playing is off the charts and his tone is evil. He sounds relaxed, and satisfied – all is going well. Maybe he forgot about this gig a day or two later, but I can’t get the CD out of my player (and not because it is stuck!). This just rules. Period. • Studio Quality 8.8 - Some tape hiss present, but the quality is there, makes for an interesting listen to hear a pre-final production version of these songs. When the gloss is removed it sounds like it could have been recorded in the mid ‘70’s. Rolling Stones Tattoo You Sessions Studio Outtakes Track List: Hang Fire (1) Black Limousine(1) Aint No Use In Crying Slave Waiting On A Friend Black Limousine(2) Neighbours Claudine Goin' Mad Worried About You/Heaven Tops Aint No Use In Crying(2) Start Me Up Hang Fire(2) Hang Fire(3)
  • Audience 8.5 - The thing with this tape is that it’s great on both ends…but in the middle it is kind of undefined. The sound begins to gell and battle itself for presence right in the middle frequency, but at the same time, when the frenzied battles end, like during quieter passages for instance, the sound is right in the pocket. It’s like the equipment wasn’t ready for the volume, but it still captures the sound in a pleasing to the ear frequency so you aren’t put off by the mix, you just strain a little to make out the details. And, the details are important in this line up because the twin guitar work at times is spectacular. I am critical of the mix for that reason, I want to hear every lick – but overall the consensus here is that this is a tape not to be missed.
