Audience 7,8 - It’s hard to get across the reason why Ozzy/Randy era collectors really ought to get this even though the rating seems low. Well, it was lower until it got remastered, and that helped highlight what is good on this tape, which is that the guitar is nicely in front, and that you can actually hear everything and it is not distorted or too muddy…except when taper seems to have to hide his mic, which thankfully is not often. But, yes, it’s got issues like most stadium rock bands that played at high volume, where the tape deck just cannot get the hugeness of the sound onto the old magnetic tape. Now, let me just say, when Randy solos, you get that clear and center here, and especially during his solo part in Suicide Solution where it’s just him. It’s kind of like pulling off the bed sheets, it really opens up. A good tape for collectors that has a lot to offer, the bonus being it is not a common tape at all. -
Studio Quality 9.8 - Almost as good as could be, a tiny amount of hum only noticeable at the beginning and end of songs…this is almost perfect but it is unmastered studio demos that to my ears sound very close to final mix. SDBRD 9.4 - I actually believe this recording probably sounds a lot better than what the people at the show were hearing. I say that because these huge outdoor concerts did not always have the pinnacle of clear sound mixes, and ear-bleeding volume does not always mean it sounds good it just means it sounds stupid loud. I’d rather have a good sounding recording rather than the damaged hearing. -
Audience 9.3 - Fantastic! Wow, I’d never heard this one previously and it’s a real revelation. Open, great stereo pan, and for once I actually heard the keyboards and I could not even believe some of the little quirky bits that it added to the music. Just listen to Crazy Train and you will hear some sounds that are NOT the guitar, almost kind of funny. Great great stuff, this is a must have! Ozzy Osbourne Milwaukee Mecca Auditorium Milwaukee, WI. Audience 8.7 - This could also get a few tenths of a point up for the careful re-mastering that recently was applied to the old tape. It definitely needed a refresh, and it got one and it is way the better for it. The highlight for me is that Randy's guitar is the clearest instrument, followed by Ozzy and the others all decently placed in the soundfield with the only knock being the overall clarity and dynamics. That being said, this is a great recording for the time period, knowing how precious few great sounding Blizzard tour tapes there are. I have to rank this in the top 5 I think, because the guitar is so good (you get the tone, and a great sense of the spirit of the room and the band). Soundboard 8.8 - This is perhaps one of the most famous and well travelled live recordings of the legendary Ozzy/Randy team. It is indeed a board tape, not exactly pristine, but certainly something everyone remotely interested in this band should have in their collection. Audience 8.6 - The first thing you want to do when you begin to play this is skip the first song. The taper is bustling around trying to get into his seat, the tape deck microphone is buried deep within his clothing and the sound mix on stage is still being dialed in...all told this track is unlistenable. What happens next is miraculous - the sun begins to shine in the darkness! We now have a recording to enjoy, and it is enjoyable. It's not Randy, but look, what was asked of Bernie was impossible and he did a remarkable job filling in while they searched for a permanent replacement. I admire Bernie Torme and do not ignore the live recordings of him with Ozzy (not many are very good unfortunately). This is one of the better sounding tapes out there from this period. Cleveland 1981 is an FM Broadcast 9.2 which I had not heard before believe it or not, so, I was suitably impressed. Anyone would be appreciative! The second disc (and most of the 3rd) is Montreal 81 and is an FM Broadcast 8.9 due to a more subdued signal that does not take away any frequency range but rather slightly compresses the sound just a bit. Now I want the listener to realize that this is a subjective opinion, technically speaking the audio here is excellent so it’s a matter of personal taste in this case. The second half of disc 3 is all studio quality. Audience 8.7 - This is a show that just came onto my radar, I can't believe I'd never heard it before. What I was expecting and what I got were two wildly different things...and I mean, it is a good thing. It's a good tape! It also happens to be the gig where the iconic photo of Ozzy lifting Randy was taken, and being able to now hear that show is kind of cool.OZZY OSBOURNE Rosemont Horizon Chicago, Illinois January 24th, 1982 *** "Diary of a Madman" tour *** 01. Glasgow - Audience 8.7 - A great tape to hear the very beginnings of Ozzy's solo career. and the brilliance of Randy Rhoads. Clear, and decent separation of instruments. Newcastle - Audience 8.5 - Slightly muddy but it has the bones of a good tape recording. I feel like if this old tape was re-mastered with AI tools it would shine. Nothing is buried beyond salvation here, in fact I would say if you just keep listening your ears adjust to the sound and it gets better and better. Thankfully guitars are distinct, vocals too, it is really the bottom end that is a bit diffuse and rumbly. Audience 8.6 - This recording really surprised me. I saw Ozzy around this time and it was excruciatingly loud so I wondered how could anyone get a good capture unless they were using excellent mics and level control? I guess someone did. This set collects not so widely available shows of varying quality but certainly ones that fill in missing parts to a collection. CD 1 - Audience 7.4 - Actually not that bad at all, and probably one of the better ones of this set. CD 2 - Audience 7.7 - Fine recording that kind of stays in a rather crisp mode, but if I were to remaster it or want to add bass this recording is a PERFECT one because highs are so good on this, and accurate to a fault really. A decent recording that needs low end but VERY enjoyable! CD 3 - Audience 7.0 - Might be the worst of this set, but Randy is clear here on this tape, followed by Ozzy, so the priorities are at least straight! CD 4 - Audience 7.5 - Right down the middle, as far as sound-field, but it is not that hard to go ahead and appreciate this for what it is. Mediocre and at times gets really good and clear especially during softer sections of songs. CD 5 - Audience 7.3 - I would rate this higher for the fact that levels are good, and everything can be heard, but the fault is that everything is mid to upper band and gets too harsh for me. I think a good EQ would do wonders, because at least the mids and highs are there in which to round out more and even reduce in favor of low mid and low frequencies. -
Soundboard 9.7 - I saw this band around the same time and I can tell you it’s great that there are board tapes around because even though they were spectacular live, the sound was very dense and there’s a lot going on. With this tape you can hear it all in glorious quality, it’s prime stuff, psychedelic rock taken to the next level. ShroomAngel Records officially licensed and released album containing vintage 70's professionally recorded tracks. If you like their 1975 debut album, you will love this. Live versions of almost all of the songs on Ruff Mix, featuring the original guitarist (side 1) Richard Heath. Smoking hot heavy progressive rock! -
This is the follow up album to the recent reissue of Ruff Mix, the band's official studio offering released in 1975. Culled from the band's personal archives, the music was saved from destruction (literally the master tapes burned in a fire and barely survived) and remixed to present a picture of the band just prior to recording Ruff Mix, and then a few years after its release. The CD features late guitarist Richard Heath (Oz Knozz, Lady Killer, Lic) on side 1 and Rick Wheeler on side 2.
