Aud 7.1 - Here’s an interesting situation, a marginal recording that is clear and audible. How can that be? It’s a transistor cassette deck recording, but the capture is centered, and the band is actually clear, just lo-fi. A recent remastering really brought out some of the music and to my ears lifted this tape out of “curiosity only” and into actual collectable status.

Aud 7.2 - Thin, like a small transistor cassette deck recording but surprisingly the narrow bandwidth allows Jimi’s guitar to penetrate and come to the center, so you are treated to a Jimi fest on this tape. Lo Fi, yes, but it’s the Jimi show with a cutting guitar sound with that tell tale stadium echo that gives it a nostalgic vibe. I kind of like this tape. Really interesting capture!

Aud 7.4 - Lo-Fi sound to be sure but the upside is that it’s not a sludge wall of sound mess here. Guitar is reasonably clear and louder than everything else by far as it sort of cuts right through this tapes’ audio spectrum. Drums peak through the haze next followed by distinguishable bass notes, and Jimi is remarkably clear as far as hearing every word he sings. Let your ears adjust to the narrow bandwidth and you are going to enjoy this show a lot more. It has many good qualities to offset a lack of sonics. Less loud songs shine through the clouds.

CD 1 Aud 8.2 Nice version here, must be a very low gen tape source. CD 2 Aud 8.3 I like this recording a lot, it’s a touch overloaded but you hear a very realistic sound, pretty close to what you may have heard standing close to the mains. Maybe a little bit of tape saturation (not distortion, two different things!), otherwise this one is very fun to hear putting you right in the middle of it all.

Aud 6.9 - Not an impossible one, for instance, vocals and guitar are here, although in a not-so-hi-fi form. That being said, the guitar bombastics in this show are second to none. He’s really letting it all fly, so I figure he was getting a good sound from his backline and he was in a terrific mood. Fiery show and worth getting for that alone.

Pro Studio 9.8 - Glorious sound quality, and the intimate setting of the Record Plant radio broadcasts back in the day is just perfect here because we all know what happened to this guy’s career after Margaritaville took off…would have been hard to reproduce such intimate settings after that. Audience 8.8 - Sonically it sits in a good place. Although separation of instruments is a little quirky to my ears, the signal is very strong, as if right in front of the main PA system, but Plant is crystal clear, and the guitar/bass combo is super fat right behind him. It makes for an interesting experience, really giving a sense of being in the front row.

Audience 8.7 - Is it possible to be too good of a player? I mean, he’s clearly got mastery of the instrument, and the material, but there’s something about a player that gets too close to the edge that excites me, like Rory Gallagher for instance, you know, where it seems at any moment they might just completely take it to the ragged edge – and Joe has a very controlled fire in contrast which is fine, but I need more. Fans will love this performance, he’s clearly at the top here.

Audience 8.6 - A “crisp” sounding tape, emphasis on drummer and vocals in the mix but you also can really hear the background keys which is nice. Not saying Joe is buried, just that this house mix seems very democratic in allowing all players to have a presence. I appreciate hearing how much the piano and keys helped shape this material. The audience is very respectful, and they love their Joe, that’s for sure.
