Audience 9.1 - Atmospheric, where even if it may be recorded from somewhere in the middle, the immersive experience has been well captured. Vocals sound lush and full, and percussion is crisp and well defined with a nice, rounded bottom end holding it all down. This is a decent recording that allows the listener to imagine where they are sitting and how the event sounded, the actual P.A. sound. Audience 9.0 - Recorded in the middle of a whole lot of fun but retains a nice focus on the music throughout. When you listen, you begin to fully kind of appreciate the aspects of an audience tape that soundboards simply don’t provide – there’s an immersive quality to it, as long as the audio fidelity is good you can relive the concert through the taper and his position in the audience. Audience 9.3 - At first I thought this might be a board, it’s very clean and clear. Then in spots, especially crowd (but some boards get bleed from stage mics) but certainly during hand claps it gives it away. It’s a really sweet recording for sure, and just sublime playing all over the place. Audience 8.7/8.8 - A little fluctuation but not much, mainly due to at times where the recording sounds a little further away probably due to taper hiding his gear. A very lively show, you can tell this is at a time when Prince mania was at a real high level (especially considering this was New Year's Eve!). Soundboard 9.7 - One of the most interesting concerts by Prince I have heard. It’s an after show gig, and Prince is cutting loose with some amazing guitar solos, to the point where it is hard to believe it is actually him playing. Certainly one to add to your collection, and one that will get frequent plays.
-
Denver 1983 Soundboard 9.3 - Typical of the sharp and detailed board tapes from this tour.
Detroit 1983 Video source 8.6 - Possibly grabbed off a VHS or some other video source. I cannot confirm this 100% but my ears tell me that is the case here. It is a professional recording with a lot of issues concerning compression and noise – I say it is pro because of the location this is being recorded from which seems definite it is not from the audience.

Soundboard 9.4 - As always the performance is stellar, and even during the early 80’s Prince had a great sense of tone and did not plasticize his guitar sound. There are some tasty and snarling moments that make you think “what was the audience thinking during this solo?” You know, the early 80’s typical Prince fan probably had no interest in fuzzed out Hendrix style soaring guitar solos mixed in with their pop/soul/funk music. Audience 9.3 - A very good tape, with less of the perfect instrumental separation but more of the live power that can be delivered through good house P.A.’s, and as long as taper is not a complete moron and/or using radio shack circa 1985 gear, chances are you’ll end up with a nice recording…as this one is. Audience 8.7 - A good tape, not one that Prince purists might visit often due to how many great soundboards there are but I’ll tell you what, I enjoyed this one. The quality evens out and reveals a tape that may not present a super clear soundfield but it does deliver plenty of realism and vibe. It’s “good enough” to be able to play all the way through and afterwards say “that was a good gig, glad someone recorded it”. Prince Special Invitation Concert Texas Southern University Houston, TX. Studio Quality 9.7 - Here is Prince’s rookie card! It’s quite interesting to hear, a pretty well rounded set of recordings musically, with maybe that late 70’s dated sound (still red hot) but it’s hard to say if I heard it in 1977 would I have thought this artist would develop into such an immense talent. Lakeland 1980 Soundboard 9.3 - So it’s the early 1980’s and I have to be honest but I would not have given Prince a chance. But, listening to these recordings today I hear real drums, crunchy guitars with an almost psychedelic tone, and confident rhythm section all belting out some decent funk and pop (although I don’t quite hear the precedent to superstardom). Interesting in hindsight. Columbia 1980 Soundboard 9.3 - Early period Prince already showing so much confidence on the live stage. Excellent sound! Audience 9.1 - Crisp and clear, rowdy audience that thankfully do not intrude into the music that much. It is strange to hear it put this way, but the nature of these funky songs lends itself well to having a sort of background of people whooping it up. It works in this case to great effect. A really fine one to enjoy whenever you need your fix of his Royal Purpleness.

Audience 8.8/9.3 - So, you know how huge the O2 Arena is, right? Well it sounds like a huge arena, but aside from the large mega stadium ambience, this is not that bad at all. It’s what you call “immersive” because you really can imagine yourself there. The audio quality itself is very good, as far as the tonality and levels, etc. The “live mix” is typical of an event like this, tons of atmosphere, party vibe (with about 15,000 of your closest friends), and Prince as always delivering the goods. The after show audio is extremely well done, sounding quite intimate and very warm. Pro 9.5/Aud. 8.8/Aud.9.4 - The main attraction I would say is the Nokia 09 show which is fantastic audience tape with lots of brightness, atmosphere, and enough punch to really elevate the listening experience. The Disc 1 LA main set is also great, and of course the highlight for me being his flawless rendition of Spanish Castle Magic. The Tonight Show tracks are obviously pro recordings and are nice to have since it was so long ago who keeps up with it anymore? A great title for the collection!

Audience 8.7 - Is this the mother of Prince shows? It very well could be just that. A marathon to begin with, but even better, the band and Prince are in spectacular form as an audience that has waited some 19 years for Prince to return to their city literally explode as one hurricane caliber force. Perfect, intense, brilliant. Audio quality is VERY good too, some nice ambience and just enough of the crowd next to the taper to imagine yourself there at the show. Just a ton of fun listening to this, and missing Prince dearly.

Soundboard 9.3 - There are moments in this recording that you swear it has to be one of Prince’s best ever – what got him so pumped up for this gig? Maybe he was pumped for every gig but slightly more at certain gigs. I don’t know but this one got me pumped as well! Love the energy and fluid playing.

Studio Quality 9.7 - Another fantastic collection of stuff Prince did in his studio and on air with disc 2 being the unreleased Milk and Honey album with Tamar.. What struck me about this particular set is right off the bat, the first track on disc one just blew me away. It’s an extended remix of Computer Blue with the sickest guitar, a real grinding, psychedelic and metallic tone that he squeezes to maximum effect and doesn’t want it to end. Neither did I!! Soundboard 9.5 - Fantastic as usual, although I wasn’t crazy about Prince’s guitar tones during this period, although he sure knew how to play the damn thing! Audience 8.8 - A functional capture, not like maybe the typical Prince stealth recording with the crisp highs and deep lows, punchy middle...this one is the stepchild I suppose where it has everything one step below it's vaunted siblings. Does that mean it is bad? Not at all, it's a fine recording that presents a VERY top form and funky Prince in his element...it's very good but not greatness and I am thankful to have it nonetheless. Audience 9.7 - Contrary to what you initially would have thought about Prince audience recordings, that the people there to see him aren’t exactly the type you would think would be overly concerned about getting an excellent capture…sure I am profiling here but it’s true - you expect this crowd is mainly there to bump and grind with each other and party like it’s 1999 or something. Now, I have to say after listening to many Prince audience recordings I come away as being impressed for the most part. This tape confirms what I now believe, that Prince bootleggers actually give a shit about the quality of the sound recordings they make. I LOVE the sound and feel of this tape…hands down I put this up against ANY soundboard you want to throw at me. This has ELECTRICITY and you don’t get that out of line recordings. Audience 9.5 - What makes this one so special is that it is a COMPLETE document of the entire processes that unfold while a performance is orchestrated. That means you will hear the entire soundcheck (a concert in itself), the show in its entirety, and the Aftershow. All of this occurs over two days, and let me tell you when I say it is immersive, I mean in the literal sense you are completely immersed from start to finish. Even the sonic quality is excellent although I understand this is entirely subjective. For me, I loved it. I loved being in the crowd and even the screams and oohs and aaahs added a real sense of realism and were not obnoxious at all. The mix and balance of the sound is so good, I love the drums, guitars are really present and vocals are in a good spot. Audience 9.3 - Yes, it is that good – and there is, I believe, a soundboard which is the source for the pro shot video but the audience tape is used here because, quite frankly, it is better. You need the atmosphere, you need the sense of space, distance, and vibe that a well-done audience tape can produce. The dynamics are good, the sound is round and warm, lush if you will. My only complaint would be the lack of the crisp highs, but there are highs present just a little rounded off maybe. I am nitpicking!

Soundboard 9.6 - Another near perfect one from you-know-who and this time guest appearance by Miles Davis. I did hear some minor static interference with Prince’s guitar pedal during some solos, nothing that would probably even be noticed by most people. Audience 8.7 - OK, so I totally understand why someone might pass this up- but I think you would be missing something special. It’s an audience recording, very very deep into the crowd, it’s noisy, it’s not fantastic but it is great – now here’s the rub: If you are reading this review, this can be considered a spoiler alert. It took me a complete song before I realized the audience was not a part of the show. The people near the mic sound like they are a part of the stage show, or at least they did to me. I felt like I was in New Orleans but its New York City. I liked this performance, and I tolerate the recording, I came away after listening to this feeling I understood Prince just a little better. After this review I think it’s only fair to warn you – on a few songs the drummer’s high hat sounds like a missile shooting through your speakers – it’s unnerving and I don’t think there’s much you can do but wait for the next song. It’s an uh-oh I ain’t gonna lie. Prince Gotta Lotta Butter To Go Butter Restaurant New York City, NY. 06-17-2006 Disc 1 1. It Ain't Over - Peach 2. Te Amo Corazon 3. Audience 8.7 - Do not be dissuaded by the rating, yes there are innumerable pristine board tapes out there to enjoy but let me tell you this show is a MONSTER! I was exhausted by the end, and what an ending stretch it is. The audio is very decent with a wide stereo field which helps it. When I first heard this tape I knew it needed to be refreshed because the performance was extraordinary and in fact it was a big event at the time. I remember hearing about it and I live in Texas! So, with that in mind I worked on it and the result is very convincing and gives life to the tape. It’s not going to be the best sounding show you’ve ever heard but it will be one of the best performances you’ve ever heard. I think this is worth it. Prince Madison Square Garden New York City, NY. Studio Quality 9.7 - A lot of collectors may think they are getting the same stuff over and over again in a different package but with the Prince studio collections you really are getting something different, but that might just mean alternate takes, mixes, or a different session with different players. Prince did like to experiment a lot and might want to try a song a hundred different ways before he was satisfied, similar maybe to Jimi Hendrix. I always find something to enjoy and always end up admiring Prince more and more after each listen…which is why I keep offering these titles because it lets me listen to even more Prince! Audience 9.4 - I think these recordings accurately translate the exact feel and sound in the venue, which is a great thing because this is the kind of emotional performance that only Prince could elicit...what I mean is, it's just him playing the piano and singing and yet it is mesmerizing, electrifying, and sometimes melancholy in a good way.

Soundboard 9.3 - Excellent, tight, punchy, clean but there’s still some atmosphere which I think may just be electricity, as in the electricity this band creates and that spills out onto the recording. A party-like atmosphere permeates and the band is very good all throughout this 3 disc set. Great performances, each and every band member shines. Soundboard 9.7 - As crystal clear as it could possibly get. Why it doesn’t get a 10 rating? Because in my opinion a perfect recording is not just crystal clear but has numerous other elements that separate it from just another clear board tape. Not to denigrate this at all, because it is great – but a crystal clear near perfect board tape is just that, a near perfect board tape that does not reflect ambience, atmosphere, vibe (although not always), and other elements of a live concert. Still, you will love this anyway it’s Prince after all and these kind of fly on the wall type recordings are super cool. The Spectrum Philadelphia, PA. 11-22-84 Disc 1 1. Bass Try Out #1 2.
