(Can't Seem To) Get A Line On You [4:24] The Sotheby’s Reel are Glyn John’s working tapes when he was the Stones' studio producer during Let it Bleed through the Sticky Fingers sessions, the Stones classic rock period.  The tape reel was auctioned some years ago at the famous Sotheby's London auction house and featured some different versions of great songs. Something to point out; "Gimme Shelter" recorded here on 15th March 1969 and featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano, a version of "You Got The Silver" sung by Jagger from 16th February and an early take of “Sister Morphine” almost without piano. But remarkable is also "Loving Cup" that starts with a striking different piano intro and lasts more than 6:30 minutes. Minimal are the differences in the mix for songs like "You Gotta Move", "Dead Flowers" and "Sister Morphine" second version that all resemble the finished "Sticky Fingers" release. On the other side of the coin we have to put the many opening riffs of both "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch" that are tirelessly repeated by an engineer that rolls back and forth the tape looking for a better echo effect, it seems. When the Stones recorded "Brown Sugar" in Muscle Shoals Studios it is said that they tried the song the whole night to get it right, we can feel how they felt while listening to all these false starts. Anyway when the tracks are completed like version number 11 of "Brown Sugar", here comes an early take with Stu on piano and no sax or takes 19 and 20 of "Bitch" where you can hear Jagger ad-libbing over Keith Richards' guitar solo. Last track offered is a primitive version of "Shine A Light" called "(Can’t Seem To) Get A Line On You" that stems from Leon Russell’s session at Olympic Studios in early October 1969 with Jagger on vocals (different words) but this take was officially released in January 1994 on a Leon Russell CD.
  • Private recording 8.7 - This is a cool piece of history, and the sound quality does not play that big of a role even though it is decent. It’s kind of loud, a little overloaded in spots, but just because it is raw, it doesn’t mean it ain’t great. I had this on vinyl decades ago and it was one of my favorite boots. It’s just a band, like any other (let’s pretend) jamming away in rehearsal. It’s just the coolest thing. The Rolling Stones '1968 Surrey Rehearsals' R.G. • Audience 8.0 - You are probably wondering why I am including low rated recordings here, especially Kiss…well you may have a point but here’s the thing: This site is for ALL collectors, and the reason this show is listed here is because it circulated for years in unlistenable quality (below 7.0), but thanks to modern technology it is now listenable. It’s from perhaps one of their best tours, musically speaking, and needed an upgrade so bad!  So, for the casual fan I would say pass, but for the Kiss collector who knows how bad this show sounded and wants to throw away that old CD, I would recommend this 2020 re-master. Still kind of rough but there is now music here instead of an insufferable wall of distortion. I am not 100% sure but I think the big thing about this show among collectors was the inclusion of the song “Move On” to the set list, perhaps only performed this one time. • Audience 8.4 - This tape takes a song to find its sweet spot (relatively speaking), so I give full credit to the taper for having the sense to make sure he was going to get the best capture he could get. What I like about this is that it’s not a muddy mess, it is bright, it’s present, and I think a very worthwhile addition to the collection especially considering it’s from 1972 which was, arguably, one of the Stones’ best tours. • Audience 8.7 - Easily one of the best recordings of the 1970 Euro tour. Mick and Keith really project, the sound is forceful, and even though you do get the rest of the band (and yes, Mick Taylor for sure), they are playing second fiddle to the Glimmer Twins. • Audience 8.6 This is a pretty common Who boot, and, well, it’s fine but to me I thought guitar was too low in the mix. It’s a rollicking good show, bass, vocals sound strong followed by Moon, and to be fair, during quieter parts Townshend’s guitar is clearer. It’s during the heavy parts where guitar loses force (it’s there, it’s not completely gone!) and probably it saves the tape deck from overloading so I’d rather it a little behind in the mix than completely distorting the tape. • Audience 8.9 - Very lively, great atmosphere! Sound is very very good, and the mix that gets to your ears includes everything happening on stage but what I really love is the sound of the drums. Fills the arena yet is pretty tight, with that slight bouncing off the walls effect that gives an almost 360 degree experience. • Audience 9.4 - Beautiful and well balanced, this taper was well known to have produced consistently high quality work in the area taping a variety of concerts big and small. Band was opening for Badfinger, and this is the earlier of the two performances that day. • Audience 8.5 - Pretty middle of the road, not annoying or bad, but not crystal clear. Hard to hear any detail in the guitars, it’s on the bassy side, so it’s bass and Jagger, and some locomotive sound which could be Keith and Ronnie. I mean, it is clear enough, it’s not a “bad” tape at all – in fact listening closely I am tempted to say this was pulled from a video source. • Audience 8.7 - A solid recording, some flaws including tape noise that lurks in the background at all times but only really makes its presence known when music is very quiet. Middle frequencies get just a touch crowded, still it is pretty clear, this is a very good, but not great, recording. • Audience 9.5 - Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. The only thing that prevents an even higher rating is some occasional conversation around the taper, not that it ever rises to an infuriating level or anything, but it sometimes calls to your attention. • Soundboard 9.4 - Yes it is CDB but it’s also a whole lot more. Since 1974 they hosted the Volunteer Jam and invited their friends and fellow “southern” rock bands including this legendary get together (famous for being the first on-stage appearance of Lynyrd Skynyrd after the plane crash). Sound is taken from what sounds like a couple of different sources but it’s all consistently great. January 13, 1979 Volunteer Jam V was held at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN. This Jam marked the return of Lynyrd Skynyrd to the stage for the first time since the '77 plane crash, and the CDB gave the first live performance of a song that would catapult the band to superstardom, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." Special guests also included Toy Caldwell and George McCorkle from the Marshall Tucker Band, Dobie Gray, The Winters Brothers Band, The Henry Paul Band, Link Wray, John Prine,Papa John Creach, Carl Perkins, and Jim Owen. • Various Sources 9.0 - I give this a high rating for many reasons, as it can be easily assumed that the sound quality will vary being a compilation. The producers were smart to put it together this way, I found it to play much like a legitimate record company release. The worst of the recordings is in itself not even that bad, in the context you are hearing it in, it takes on new significance. I myself did not realize how few times some of these songs were played live, so having a collection like this makes sense. I enjoyed it immensely. So will you. Even if you're a collector of every individual show this is still a keeper to have, one reason being the unreleased track on disc 5, "Nowhere Else To Turn", sure it's a Ray Wilson-led Genesis track, but one of the very few unreleased studio tracks by Genesis to have leaked to the collector's. • Audience 9.1 - A beautiful recording with a terrific drum sound, and expansive, atmospheric ensemble mix of all instruments especially keyboards to pair with that drum sound. • Audience 8.8 - Very bright recording, the bottom end is there and it has good detail but could be a little deeper. That being said, if you want to hear the combination of solid, hard rock guitar paired with Greg Lake’s proggy and sometimes jazzy keyboards well, this is about as good as that combination can ever sound. It works actually, quite well. The good thing about this recording being on the bright side is that the guitars and keys are especially clear. • Audience 9.3 - Taken from master tape, this is super clean, vibrant, and detailed – as an Italian prog recording ought to be.  These guys cover a wide range of sound and style all keeping within that certain ethos of grandiose, elegant Italian rock (can get frenetic at times, complex, gentle, ethnic, it's all that and more). • Audience 9.5 - Superb fidelity, and as always a fine performance is delivered with that trademark menacing keyboard sound. At times it could be confused with electric guitar, which is exactly what I think Gianni Leone was going for since the start of the band in 1972. • CD 1 Audience 8.8 - A very good, bright, well balanced recording. Most welcomed because for me, it’s this time period (actually 1970-73) of the band I like the most. CD 2 Audience 8.1 - A somewhat flat, and a little bit muffled recording. I can still hear everything, it lacks dynamic range, but I did not find it annoyingly so, just when compared to disc 1 this one sounds lifeless. • Audience 9.7 - This recording is a sonic treat for your ears. The band performs a percussive style of music that is picked up by tapers equipment in a most dynamic way, with beautiful tonal quality, separation of instruments, and atmosphere. A winner! • Soundboard 9.3 - A very well traveled tape, seeing release as a video, as well as countless boot CD’s. The video was so-so, the audio has always been great. The show itself, not their best, and not their worst. Is it essential?  It’s a great sounding ’76 board tape (the closing gig of the tour in Europe) so, my thought is that it should be somewhat necessary in the collection. • Audience 8.6 - This is an untouched, raw transfer straight from the reels, and as such it will sound like it could be MUCH better sonically with some professional sound re-mastering. Many people will no doubt want to hear it as it was recorded, and it is good, it’s really pretty good, but what I would prefer is a sonic facelift because I think this one really deserves it. It’s still a great show. • Audience 9.1 - A really fine recording and a great show this is! Some minor limitations present during very heavy passages where the equipment fails to maintain the clarity we get used to during most of this show – but it’s not a deal-breaker at all because the recording remains powerful without distorting which is critical to the success of the tapers’ efforts here. You might lose a touch of vocals and some clarity (a little bit) but that will not detract from the pleasure you will get from this show. Mostly Very Good to Excellent quality audience recordings. Interesting to listen in this context, with the idea being that the band worked out the arrangements in front of live audiences then went to record after the tour. • Audience 8.8 - A rare treat! Two sets in a small venue in really good quality by a band that had tremendous potential. This is such a cool find, more like this please! • Audience 8.9 - A super clear recording with a marvelous drum sound. Recording levels are a touch low so crank it up, don’t worry it sounds MUCH better loud! • Soundboard 9.8 - There would be no reason why a professionally recorded Kraftwerk show should sound anything less than near perfect because let’s face it, unless you are a complete moron, it would be hard to screw up their mix. It’s pretty basic, and because of that what you have here is pretty darn good. Kraftwerk l'Olympia Paris, France February 28th, 1976 Personnel: Ralf Hütter: Minimoog Model D, Vako Orchestron, mixer Karl Bartos: Electronic Percussion Wolfgang Flür: Electronic Percussion, photo-electric light-activated drum cage Florian Schneider-Esleben: ARP Odyssey, Votrax VS-6 "talking typewriter", electronic flute-synth device, mixer Disc 1 1. Tuning & Radioactivity 2. Airwaves 3. The Voice of Energy & Die Sonne, Der Mond, Die Sterne 4. Kometenmelodie 5. Tongebirge & Tanzmusik Disc 2 6. Autobahn 7. Mitternacht Notes on the show: Yet another AMAZING find that's now just come to light. This is a master tape from the France Inter archive of the FULL l'Olympia show! We only had 21 mins from the 'Somewhere in Europe' LP and then 38 mins from a rebroadcast in 2015. This is the complete show from a radio programme called "We're Going Out Tonight" with no radio DJ talking over the music or tuning. Very likely recorded before being broadcast on the radio. Of special note is Florian's use of the Votrax VS-6 "Talking Typewriter" as Karl put it in his memoir for "Die Sonne, Der Mond, Die Sterne."
  • Audience 7.8 - Recorded on what sounds like a realistic cassette deck, it’s limited in dynamic range and clarity. It is not, however, a pile of muck and murk, you can hear pretty much every instrument, and guitar cuts through during solos but rhythm-wise it’s behind the sound a bit. Vocals are clear, I get drums pretty well, so it’s not a waste of time and it’s a great tour with 25 or 6 to 4 being their latest blockbuster smash hit.  I would get this if you appreciated the band during their initial rise to stardom, as the joy in their playing does come through on this tape. • Audience 8.6 - I don’t quite know what to make of this tape – it is very clear but with some kind of slight crispness in the middle to high band that suggests the microphone being used was not up to the task. That being said, it’s still a pretty good recording, and with a class mic it would have been a 9.0 or better. Well worth getting, that is my final assessment. • Soundboard 9.5 - Superb clarity and attenuation, especially where the high end is concerned. Very lifelike, no sign of radio compression which suggests this tape to be pre-FM broadcast. • Audience 8.7 - Electric and palpable, from the band on down to the audience members, a solid gig and a pretty enjoyable recording with a terrific bass response especially. In the pantheon of Yes shows, I’d have to rate this performance as transcendent, and a great reminder of what Patrick Moraz contributed in his brief tenure.
