• Soundboard 9.5 - Pinpoint precision, that is how I describe this one. The band, the songs, the mix, the tone…so what I am saying is “it’s a good one”. Pine Knob, MI.  July 26, 1978 Disc 1
    1.  Song For America
    2.  Point Of Know Return
    3.  Paradox
    4.  Journey From Mariabronn

    2.  Portrait (He Knew)
    3.  Carry On Wayward Son
    4.  Sparks Of The Tempest
    5.  Bringing It Back
    6.  Magnum Opus
  • Soundboard 8.9 - Would have rated higher but the tape breaks a little at the top where the levels are so hot, not distorted, just that fragile old analog tape overloading signal noise but only during the really heavy sections where the whole band is cooking. Still highly enjoyable!
  • Soundboard 8.8 - Very decent, smoothly mixed no major tape problems. Lacks just a touch of dynamics keeping it from the 9.0’s on my rating.
  • Audience 8.8 - Strong and clear with good atmosphere. Be sure to check out BAD COMPANY also at the Providence Civic Center on April 13, 1976 if you want the complete nights performance, as KANSAS opened up for BAD COMPANY .... and what an exciting night it was!
  • Audience 8.8 - Tremendous wide open sound field that not only captures a great band at a great time but also some dynamics of the hall. Immersive experience.
  • Soundboard 9.2 - Another fine recording from the board is here to enjoy. A great setlist, and I mean it is super strong all the way through. Hard to beat this period. Great stuff! Kansas Rochester Auditorium Theatre Rochester, NY March 17th, 1977 Disc 1 1. Carry On Wayward Son 2. Icarus: Borne On Wings Of Steel 3. Down The Road 4. Mysteries And Mayhem 5. Lamplight Symphony 6. The Wall 7. Lonely Wind Disc 2 1. Miracles Out Of Nowhere 2. Guitar Solo - Jam 3. Magnum Opus 4. Belexes 5. Song For America 6. Hungarian Dance No. 5 - Cheyenne Anthem
  •  Soundboard 9.2 - A “reference” board mix, clearly…but it’s great. It isn’t going to win any awards for sparkling and atmospheric sound, but it’s a punchy, in-the-pocket sound that marries well with Kansas’ heavy progressive style.

  • Audience - 9.5, 8.5, 8.8  We start with a real cracker of a tape, recorded close up with excellent gear…hard to put this down it is extremely captivating. Then we have a first – the first gig in Europe by the band, and it is a very good tape but we are going to feel the difference between this and the first disc. It’s not got the dynamics of the ’77, but it is considered a very good tape nonetheless. The final disc contains a very good recording with plenty of atmosphere and some dynamics, maybe a touch of clutter in a very specific mid band frequency but it is minor to my ears. It’s a real enjoyable tape! • FM Broadcast 9.5 - This is kind of like the Red Bull of rock in the mid 80’s. In hindsight, you could say it was cool that even when these guys had some very anthemic rock numbers (and some with cheesy lyrics), they at least had a heavier approach to the music. The sound quality is excellent here and it seems to me if you have any interest in mid 80’s hard rock/aor/metal, this band would be and should be on your radar and then by extension you would seek out something like this FM broadcast. Keel Harpo's WLLZ Live Broadcast - FM Detroit, MI March 8, 1985 1. Back to the City 2. Electric Love 3. Speed Demon 4. Lay Down the Law 5. Easier Said than Done 6. Princess of Illusion 7. • Soundboard 9.6 - Superb recording as far as mix and clarity. I would guess it was recorded with releasing it as an LP, but it just did not happen as far as I know.
  • Soundboard 9.3 - An expertly recorded and mixed show. It’s hard to find anywhere to improve it, but maybe, and I am nitpicking here, but boosting the guitars in the mix a bit (disclaimer: I am a guitarist, I have bias!). Kick Axe Country Club Los Angeles CA 1984-09-17 01 – Alive & Kickin’ (4:10) 02 – On The Road To Rock (4:43) 03 - Vices (4:13) 04 – Just Passin’ Thru (4:56) 05 - Maneater (3:24) 06 – Runnin’ Wild In The Night (3:30) 07 – The Dark Crusade (7:12) 08 – Dreamin’ About You (5:16) 09 – Stay On Top - Drum Solo (6:09) 10 – Heavy Metal Shuffle (3:14) Band: George Criston - vocals Larry Gillstrom- guitar Raymond Arthur Harvey - guitar Victor Langen - bass Brian Gillstrom - drums
  • Audience 8.3 - This recording is clear, but does have low recording levels so turn the volume up on this one.
  • Barcelona 1973 - Audience 7.8 - Bright, reasonably clear, enjoyable (nice bass!) Berkeley 1973 - Audience 8.4
  • Audience 8.9 - By ’73 audiences had realized King Crimson was not a typical “rock” band and this recording captures the experience of a group of people seeing and hearing something entirely unlike your basic rock concert. The taper was well positioned and used very good gear, and this source sounds very much like either 1st gen or master it is quiet (although just the faintest bit of tape noise) and has captured the ambience and mood of the gig which is nice. Both shows are represented, what a fine document this is! • Audience 8.4 - This is a recording that is hard to figure out because on the one hand it could also be taped in a television studio which is my hunch. The tapers and those around them can be heard between songs but settle down once the music starts, it kind of adds a lot to the atmosphere. That being said, this is still pretty good, and what a gig, really, I mean amazing!
  • Audience 8.6 – 8.8  - All of the recordings here are good to very good audience recordings made on obviously portable tape recorders with limited capacity to hold the bandwidth needed for a loud, intense rock group. That being said, the tapes have gone through processing that allows more music information to come through, less tape hiss and background gunk, so you get to actually hear and decipher well what can only be described as groundbreaking experimental rock/jazz/prog by the band that wrote the book on it. Amazing power and finesse on display, and to reiterate my point on sound quality – this collection of live KC is still fundamentally indispensable to any self-proclaimed prog rock aficionado. • Audience 8.2 - What does this tape offer?  Unequaled tension, suspense, musicianship, mood, and satisfaction. Is it the best quality?  No, but you can clearly hear every instrument, and I will take an 8.2 Crimson over 98% of anyone else in a heartbeat. This music is just brilliant and intense.
  • Audience 8.9 - The great thing about this band is that most times a relatively normal tape machine can capture them cleanly and a really good machine captures them gloriously. This is a very good tape, almost approaching a dirty glory. King Crimson Arts Centre Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA September 28, 1973 Disc 1 01. Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part One 02. Bob’s MC 03. • Audience 8.8 - A solid recording, with just a hint of bass-rattle in the lower extremities but it is not problematic. In October of 1973, Bill Aucoin, who had witnessed several KISS concerts during the summer months, approached the group to become their personal manager. KISS hired Aucoin, and subsequently inked a recording contract with Casablanca Records on November 1, 1973. KISS was the first act signed to Neil Bogart's new label. KISS began recording tracks for their debut LP at Bell Sound Studios in New York City during Autumn of '73. On December 31st, KISS performed at the Academy of Music in New York City, opening for Blue Öyster Cult and Iggy Pop, with the hyped New Years Eve gig billed as the band's official industry premiere. This has gone down in KISStory as the first time Gene would accidentally ignite his hair while breathing fire at the end of "Firehouse!" "Dirty Livin'" extended version wasn't very widely known at the time of release, possibly because it was only released in countries like Italy, Germany, France and Mexico. Soundboard 8.6 The board mix favors only one half of the band to the near exclusion of the others but does level out some as it progresses. In this presentation it certainly allows you to understand the contributions of Ace!  The bonus material is all outstanding. This is worth picking up despite the strange board tape because it is extremely early Kiss and these kinds of tapes are very scarce.
  • Soundboard 8.9 - Hard to find anything to complain about when it comes to listening to vintage Kiss board tapes, that is, if you are like me and grew up with Kiss.  Believe it or not, Kiss displayed very competent musicianship back in these days.
