Soundboard 9.5 - So I haven’t kept up with this band since Steve Morse joined. I’ve always loved them, but they just fell off my radar. It was with great pleasure that I reacquainted myself with them as I reviewed this show. It’s multi-layered, multi-dimensional music with some resemblance to the old band if Ritchie traded places with his Southern fried twin brother!  I mean, it works, don’t get me wrong – but it can fool you because it’s not Ritchie’s band by any stretch. I like this one maybe a little better to be honest. This is a “deeper” Deep Purple actually, and the orchestra behind them makes it that much more interesting, if sometimes a little bit “cabaret” but it still rocks when it has to and the guitar work by Morse is impeccable. It’s so nice to hear a tape where Terry’s guitar is articulate and clear and not buried in the mud. Audience 8.3 - I find these early club dates fascinating. It sounds closer to Taste than anything he was doing on subsequent tours. The guitar work is more off the cuff, edgier maybe. This recording features a pretty clear and up-front guitar, with vocals next and kick drum following. It’s good, a little hiss present, but to have tapes like this to hear the early period Rory post-Taste is most welcome. Audience 9.0 - I like the sound of this recording, it’s got a very nice and smooth bass which is pretty articulate, and the instruments in general are in perfect harmony with each other, you would be hard pressed to get a better mix even through the board. Audience 9.4 - This to me is what keeps me in the game. When I thought I had every 79 show (my favorite period) and this comes along…and….it…smokes…everything! Maybe not a perfect score in the audio dept. which by the way it is excellent (a little pegging of the meters when the band is in full on rage but it’s minor, a minor issue) but it delivers in just about every possible way. Frank’s playing is off the charts and his tone is evil. He sounds relaxed, and satisfied – all is going well. Maybe he forgot about this gig a day or two later, but I can’t get the CD out of my player (and not because it is stuck!). This just rules. Period. Audience 8.1 - Tape is not clear but also not muddy, it’s just typical of early 70’s gear not being able to handle freakishly loud rock bands. This recording highlights drums, guitars, and bass and vocals are in the background. That being said, the drums and guitars are pretty clear, and there’s plenty of the dueling guitar pyrotechnics on display. I don’t complain to have this show to hear, it’s clearly worth it to the collectors out there. Audience 8.6 - A lively and loud tape, with great atmosphere, in that you get the hall acoustics without unnecessary boominess or echo, just the right amount to give you that sense of being there. That makes for a unique listening experience because this show does not sound like the next show or the one before, the playing and arrangements are going to be different but so is the venue and acoustics. As long as the recording is good, and this one is pretty darn good, you will enjoy the show. Audience 8.5 - Despite being a clean recording (probably from a master), this is captured from possibly middle of venue meaning it does sound a little distant (vocals are the giveaway). At times, it sounds like the tapers try to adjust their position and the sound gets fuller, although the music is still kind of blended together and you don’t get distinct guitar notes, even though you get the overall impact of guitar – now solos are a different thing, because those seem to soar above it all and are actually much clearer and more present in the mix. Audience 9.6 - Hallelujah! This is just sublime, you get not only a band that sounds completely in lock step with each other (and I mean where even the improvs sound fluid and effortless), but also Frank being on top of his game. His tone, his attack, his feedback, his sound on the tape it’s just a really exceptional capture and performance to elevate this tape to MUST HAVE status. The 88 tour had its share of sleepers, but this is not one of those, by all standards this has to be considered one of the best nights. Audience 8.4 - A smooth recording, pretty stable, but does lack some punch therefore it is recommended to “season to taste”, but thankfully the pallet is there to lay on your coloring.  Some minor tape hiss pervades but is kind of background, my hunch is that this tape went through some mastering process to add boost and it helps a lot. It’s a good tape and a great show! Audience 8.2 - A tape that has only recently surfaced, and had some problems that would have relegated it to the dustbin of history if it were not for some diligent and careful re-mastering. The before and after is a testament to the modern renaissance in the music collecting world. Treasure troves of music is being restored and remastered and a lot of that stuff would have been considered unlistenable once upon a time. This tape suffered from a narrow bandwidth incapable of containing drums, and a lot of the bottom end was a mess. It was excruciating to listen to in that state. This tape has been given a new lease on life, and thankfully so! Audience 8.4 - A barn-burner gig and maybe one of the best of the tour (recorded, anyway) with some unbelievable jamming. The audio is decent, some mid band clutter was equalized to allow less noise and more music to permeate your space. I think that made the difference with this tape. It’s worth getting and will impress you even more than you might already have been with these guys. Always gave their best. FM Radio Broadcast 9.2 - Very enjoyable, and tape runs stable and clean so you can blast this at your next gathering of friends (which is soon, hopefully). Audience 8.8 - I like these kinds of audience recordings where the taper is kind of close to the speakers yet the sound does not distort. It makes for a very realistic and intense sound, closer to what it would have been like in person, rather than the soundboard feed which is not representative of the sound that came out of the PA system. Also, I like the Jean-Luc Ponty period, the jazzy workouts were sometimes incredibly intense and not necessarily traditionally jazzy, but progressively jazzy. This is one such gig. If you have to pick one, I would always point to this one for that reason but also because it is a great show and features a special guest or two (Adam West and son Dweezil), but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. Soundboard 9.2 - There are precious few mid 70’s Steely Dan tapes out there, thankfully most of them are very good quality because the band is a very special collection of highly skilled players who write creative, provocative, challenging music that NEVER gets old. This is just a must have, it’s that simple.
