Audience 8.6 - A lively and loud tape, with great atmosphere, in that you get the hall acoustics without unnecessary boominess or echo, just the right amount to give you that sense of being there. That makes for a unique listening experience because this show does not sound like the next show or the one before, the playing and arrangements are going to be different but so is the venue and acoustics. As long as the recording is good, and this one is pretty darn good, you will enjoy the show. Audience 8.5 - Despite being a clean recording (probably from a master), this is captured from possibly middle of venue meaning it does sound a little distant (vocals are the giveaway). At times, it sounds like the tapers try to adjust their position and the sound gets fuller, although the music is still kind of blended together and you don’t get distinct guitar notes, even though you get the overall impact of guitar – now solos are a different thing, because those seem to soar above it all and are actually much clearer and more present in the mix. Audience 9.6 - Hallelujah! This is just sublime, you get not only a band that sounds completely in lock step with each other (and I mean where even the improvs sound fluid and effortless), but also Frank being on top of his game. His tone, his attack, his feedback, his sound on the tape it’s just a really exceptional capture and performance to elevate this tape to MUST HAVE status. The 88 tour had its share of sleepers, but this is not one of those, by all standards this has to be considered one of the best nights. FM Broadcast 9.3 and Audience 7.8 - The FM tape is very good but the Tokyo show is suffering from what seems to be too low recording levels meaning once you turn the volume up the tape hiss comes along with it. When you do turn it up, you at least hear the band playing and pretty much get a good idea of everything but there is some hiss to deal with. Audience 8.4 - A smooth recording, pretty stable, but does lack some punch therefore it is recommended to “season to taste”, but thankfully the pallet is there to lay on your coloring. Some minor tape hiss pervades but is kind of background, my hunch is that this tape went through some mastering process to add boost and it helps a lot. It’s a good tape and a great show! Audience 8.2 - A tape that has only recently surfaced, and had some problems that would have relegated it to the dustbin of history if it were not for some diligent and careful re-mastering. The before and after is a testament to the modern renaissance in the music collecting world. Treasure troves of music is being restored and remastered and a lot of that stuff would have been considered unlistenable once upon a time. This tape suffered from a narrow bandwidth incapable of containing drums, and a lot of the bottom end was a mess. It was excruciating to listen to in that state. This tape has been given a new lease on life, and thankfully so! Audience 8.4 - A barn-burner gig and maybe one of the best of the tour (recorded, anyway) with some unbelievable jamming. The audio is decent, some mid band clutter was equalized to allow less noise and more music to permeate your space. I think that made the difference with this tape. It’s worth getting and will impress you even more than you might already have been with these guys. Always gave their best. Audience 8.0 – 8.5 This is one of those “right in the thick of it” tapes. Immersed into the crowd, you become part of the experience of the concert along with the tapers themselves. Is that good or bad? In this case it starts off a little shaky and gets better, and better, as the show progresses until at the end you realize you had a great time. Audience 8.8 - I like these kinds of audience recordings where the taper is kind of close to the speakers yet the sound does not distort. It makes for a very realistic and intense sound, closer to what it would have been like in person, rather than the soundboard feed which is not representative of the sound that came out of the PA system. Also, I like the Jean-Luc Ponty period, the jazzy workouts were sometimes incredibly intense and not necessarily traditionally jazzy, but progressively jazzy. This is one such gig. Audience 8.7 - Every audience tape has a certain unique “timbre” to it, a quality hard to define – it encompasses distance from source, surrounding ambience, equalization, harmonics, and more. So, this recording is what I would call “very good” but different than other 88 Euro Zappa tapes in timbre. I find this one leaning too far in upper mid band and treble, not irritatingly, but wanted more bottom end. My ears were telling me that is what it wanted…yours may not it is all very subjective. Audience 8.8 - Back in the cassette tape trading days, many tapes would be passed around containing the Mick Taylor period and those were the ones I most gravitated towards. A lot of those shows I have never listened to again since the cassette days for fear they would still sound so weak…but this one has blown me away, literally. It is not the old multi-gen, hissy and muddy clusterphuck like so many of those audience recordings were, this one is really pretty friggin’ good. Not perfect, but VERY damn good. Audience 8.6 - A kind of bumpy ride at times, being immersed in the middle of a rowdy audience, but the music comes through surprisingly well for such a massive cataclysm it must have been! It’s kind of fun, it’s a time capsule, and as long as I can hear the music in a clear way, even if it is not “hi-fi”, it’s fine by me. CD 1 Audience 8.5 - A very good sounding tape here, nothing that annoys the ears, in fact it is clear with a solid impact vocal and smoothly integrated guitar/bass. I did notice some phasing effect but it’s not even a bother at all, in fact in this case it adds some atmospherics. Solid! CD2 Audience 8.7 - Slightly more distant than the previous show but certainly has good clarity, a more even mix as far as the drums being at the same level as guitar, bass, and vocals. It gains points in the overall clarity, sounding like a master was used as there is virtually no tape noise, no mid-band muddiness, really CLEAR! Turn up the volume because it sounds way much better at loud levels. Soundboard 8.8 - A little bit thin, but it’s clear and of course the guitar is really captured well. Vocals are sometimes in the background here, not that it matters because the all important guitar work is so present you will be more focused on it instead. CD1 Audience 9.1 - A great capture of the evening’s festivities. Clear, close, well balanced. Bravo! CD2 Audience 8.7 - A big bold sound, and from the master tape, but where disc 1 has well defined instrument separation, this one is a more melded together sound with emphasis on bottom end. You still have an enjoyable experience, but it’s more about the rock and roll power rather than finesse with this tape. Audience 8.4 - This is a tape that fits the Stones image, it’s rough, raw, and loaded with chaotic energy. It has flaws, but it recovers and gets back onto your good side. You will get used to the screaming chick, thankfully her howls are spread out. Try not to get too wrapped up into the occasional drop out or glitch because you can really get sucked into this concert if you let yourself. Audience 9.2 - Both shows represented here are very similar and probably done by the same crew, in roughly the same vicinity because both are close to the P.A. (and not distorted!). In fact, both are exactly the kind of audience tapes I like the most – brutally powerful with just enough atmosphere to get the feel of the day.
