Soundboard 9.6 - Killer sound for a heavier rock band because they preserve the tone and the dynamics, it’s not just VOLUME up to 10 although I am pretty certain this show was very loud. The engineer needs a gold medal. Love it! Soundboard 9.6 - Same exact setup for recording as the Evening show do the review is the same. Killer sound for a heavier rock band because they preserve the tone and the dynamics, it’s not just VOLUME up to 10 although I am pretty certain this show was very loud. Soundboard 8.8 - The audio quality is very good, the mix wanders around a bit – because I am pretty sure this wasn’t just the band rehearsing but the entire crew. Sounds to me like they were ready to go – some hot playing! Audience 8.5 - Certainly a mainstay title in the huge catalog of live Metallica boots. Why? Because it is the classic line-up and it sounds reasonably good, even though the twin guitar attack is not clearly defined. The band was making a statement around this time, and that much is certainly evident with these Ride The Lightening tour tapes. Metallica Stockholm, Sweden 12-12-1984 1. Ecstacy Of Gold 2. Studio Rehearsals 8.8 - Thankfully recorded on something other than a cheap boombox so the quality is there as far as being able to hear everything clear. Vocals are the only thing that does not ring out clearly, but other than that this is gold. This early Metallica is a far cry from what would be in just a few short years. METALLICA 1982.03.XX - Downey, CA Rehearsals in Ron McGovney's Garage 1. Hit the Lights 2. Helpless 3. Jump in the Fire 4. Let It Loose 5. Sucking My Love 6. Am I Evil? 7. The Prince 8. Killing Time Released in '94 via a collaboration between KNAC and Ron McGovney, a number of these demos were debuted during the CLASSIC and ORIGINAL Mandatory Metallica show on 105.5 KNAC. They did a whole week with Ron McGovney in the studio and some of these gems were played on the air. Pat O'Connor, one of the DJ's from the Mandatory show, had his hand in putting out numerous Silver Bootleg CD's and promptly released Sucking My Love between '94 and '95 and then released Things That Should Not Be in late '95. Always an interesting listen... they had a long way to go. Lineup: James Hetfield - Vocals (No Guitar) Dave Mustaine - Guitar Ron McGovney - Bass Lars Ulrich - Drums -
Studio tapes 9.0 - Great to hear this raw, early pre LP stuff because quite frankly it’s fantastic. It’s a different take because there is a real sense of urgency with this recording, like the band know it’s critical to make it happen or they remain bums on the streets of San Francisco. We all know what happened next. Montreal - Audience 8.7 - You can tell the tapers gear was of good quality, the capture is actually very clear but in capturing the actual sound at the show you gotta accept whatever is coming out of the PA system, and however the sound guy has mixed it. That being said, I can tolerate this one much more than 90% of all the other Metallica audience tapes which suffer greatly from sheer volume overload most of the time. Missouri - Soundboard 9.1 - Great drums sound believe it or not, and both guitars are distinguishable from one another which makes it very well worth hearing. These two guys can really play, maybe not quite Dave Mustaine level (ok so I am partial to Megadeth) but they can do what they do in very convincing fashion especially when you can actually hear it. Audience 8.3 - Interesting recording, it is actually very clean, master quality source, but just fails to contain the massive Metallica sound by a mere inches, and I mean by how close to the mains this seems to be. Collectors who do not have this will LOVE it though, it really gives you a real sense of the loudness and intensity of the band. -
Soundboard 8.7 - This is the kind of soundboard that was probably meant just for soundman audio reference. It’s fine though, and generally speaking, way better than any audience tape because Metallica, especially in 1986 (I know because I saw them in ’86 and it was the loudest concert I’d ever heard) was so loud there wasn’t any way to get a good capture unless you had excellent gear with mic level adjustment. Metallica - Metal, Inc. Live @ The Coliseum, El Paso TX May 12, 1986 1. Master Of Puppets 2. For Whom The Bell Tolls 3. Ride The Lightning 4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 5. Seek And Destroy 6. Creeping Death 7. Am I Evil? 8. Damage, Inc. -
Soundboard 9.1 - This is a strong, powerful sounding board with a pretty decent sound mix, although not super clear, but not a muddy mess…somewhere in between the two but leans toward being mostly clear. Metallica Live in Davenport, IA - DEAD HEROES May 30, 1986 Coliseum Ballroom Damage, Inc. Tour 1. Master Of Puppets 2. For Whom The Bell Tolls 3. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 4. Audience 8.9 - Easily one of the best auds of the early Metallica era. This is one that I am sure every Metallica collector already has but if you are just curious, or maybe only recently getting turned on to this stuff, well you gotta get this one.Metallica Stadthalle Mulheim Köln, West-Germany 1984-12-05 Disc 1 01. Soundboard 8.7 - Signs of age on the old tape, it’s not from a master source but you know, it’s early Metallica in soundboard quality! You don’t have to be a metalhead to be able to appreciate what this band did, and listening to a decently mixed board allows you to hear more of the musicality and musicianship. -
Audience 8.8 - A rather good tape, it's kind of rare to find something like this just because of the extreme volume and what not that metal presents to taping gear - but this one shines. Sometimes the rhythm guitar seems to drop out a little in the mix, every now and then but that might be a PA or mix thing. Metallica - The Ecstasy of Aragon Aragon Ballroom Chicago, Il, USA February 9, 1985 1. The Ecstacy of Gold 2. Fight Fire With Fire 3. Ride The Lightning 4. Phantom Lord 5. The Four Horsemen 6. Soundboard 9.4 - Even though I am less of a hardcore metalhead these days compared to, say, when I was in my 20's, I can honestly say I still enjoy listening to Megadeth music. The fact is, when you get a recording this good, when you can hear everything clearly, you better understand the genius that is Dave Mustaine. Let's face it - the guy is just gifted. How you can sing and play those insane, complex chord patterns, I will never know.
