• Audience 9.0 - I like the sound of this recording, it’s got a very nice and smooth bass which is pretty articulate, and the instruments in general are in perfect harmony with each other, you would be hard pressed to get a better mix even through the board. It’s also a historic concert, for the obvious reasons, and hearing it knowing what happened later, it adds another dimension. A great one! 04-12-1971 Montreux Casino, Switzerland 1. Intro, 2. Pound For A Brown, Sleeping In A Jar, 9. Wonderful Wino, Sharleena, Cruisin' For Burgers, 10.King Kong (interrupted by fire) 11.FIRE!
  • Audience 8.5 - Sounds typical of medium halls where there’s some atmosphere but not terrible echo, a nice balance. Sonically, this is a little above average maybe, you get everything in balance, no ultra high highs or deep throbbing lows either.
  • Audience 8.4 - Pretty darn good for a small club gig with amateur audience recording technique, if indeed it was done by an audience member. As you know, Frank sometimes recorded the band, not always through the board either.
  • Soundboard - Sounds like it may actually be a close mic’d recording as there is little audience noise and yet there is a sense of the venue and atmosphere in the vocals especially. Very good!
  • Audience 9.3 - This is the 4th show (5-25-88) of the rare 8CD set "I Am The Clouds" which were the last 4 shows recorded in Germany in 1988 during the final days of Franks touring.  (also offered individually or as a set) "I would say the 11 piece band from 1988 is probably one of the best bands that I've had out, if not the best band. Its a combination of guys that I've worked with for a long time, plus adding a horn section." - Frank Zappa
  • Soundboard 9.7 - Sound quality is top notch. Also features 3 bonus tracks taken from a 1976 official unreleased album entitled "Impossible Album".
  • Audience 9.1 - Every now and then you get a tape you knew nothing about and it just blows you away. This is one such. Epic performance for starters, but it’s also got a great, lively energy and a totally in-the-pocket sound. The whole band is inspired, the songs just sound incredibly fresh, every solo is a thrill, and the crowd seems to be aware that they are witnessing an inspired concert performance.
  • Audience 9.3 - This recording sparkles, a very pro effort made by the tapers who apparently had excellent seats on the first row of the balcony center stage. • Soundboard 9.5 - This is a compilation of unreleased guitar vehicles and exceptional solo excerpts for fans of the "Shut Up N' Play Yer Guitar" and "Guitar" albums. The sound quality is excellent soundboard. Yes, some of us are guilty of skipping over the “vamp” sections in order to get to the shred. This compilation delivers what I feel are some of Frank’s tastiest pieces, and all in superb quality. • Audience 9.3 - A really clean, punchy recording that has realistic presence, and is river deep and mountain high – I especially found the drums, kick drum, toms, this was a pleasant surprise for an audience tape to deliver almost studio quality dynamics and placement in the stage mix was on point. Amazing to think that this tape remained out of circulation to only just recently, while we did have other shows from this week at the Hollywood Palace in 1984.

  • Audience 8.4 - What makes this LA show special is that only pieces of this concert was used for the official release "Just Another Band From LA". This is the complete performance (14o min.) with nothing left out, including a Soundboard (Sdbrd 8.0) segment (25 min.).
  • Audience 8.9 - FZ and Hot Rats Tour. Features the original Don "Sugarcane" Harris on violin and vocals, razor sharp guitar with an extra bite is how I like to define it. If this time period of the late 60's/early 70's is one that you enjoy, then this is the one to get. You get 70 minutes of classic songs, few of which are seldom ever played live.
  • Audience 9.0 - This is yet another outstanding sonic treat for those who, like me, are revisiting the last major tour Frank would undertake in his career. Lots of great playing, even though he maybe wore out a little deep into the tour, he really shines on this one. Recommended! • Audience 8.8 - A solid recording that may be a semi-professional reel to reel machine. You can tell as the recorder dials in the sound levels at the start of the show. • Soundboard 8.5 and Soundboard 8.2 - One half of the show is much clearer than the other for some reason. Both have been remastered but one can only do so much. Still, this can be appreciated and being a board tape, it is pretty easy to hear each instrument.
  • Soundboard 9.1 - All of this material is soundboard but keep in mind these 60's Zappa boards all have a somewhat "dated" sound quality which is not a bad thing because it creates a sonic time capsule that allows you to feel the vibe of the times. I think some of his audience might have been a little bewildered by what they were seeing and hearing because the reactions are sometimes very telling.

  • Los Angeles 1984 Soundboard 9.7 - A great one here! Crisp sounding and a beautiful mix especially how the drums sound and all the vocals even backing vocals are clearly audible. Worcester 1984 Audience 8.8 - This is not a bad tape, but it is not recorded close to the mains so it does sound somewhat distant. The music is clear and not muddy but lacks that depth your ears crave. What it does highlight is the vocals which really project, keyboards sound comparatively good too, and the recording does improve somewhat throughout the performance sounding a little fuller as it goes along. Again, not a bad one and worthy of your time but on this 2 show set (From One End To The Other) the LA show is the better by far. • Audience 8.7 - Great capture for an outdoor show back in 1979 and a good audience participation. While the band is in top form, they both seem to feed off of each other, which helps make for an outstanding performance every time.

  • Audience 9.1 - This recording is very very clean, and there is a ton of headroom where literally you can turn the volume all the way up and still get a very clean sound. There almost needs to be more mid punch, and at times, probably in sections that have been patched with a different source, there is a noticeable increase in volume/mid band. This could also be something with the taper, I do not know. Either way this recording is pretty damn good. Frank Zappa 1988-04-29 Helsinki, Finland Jäähalli Set 1: 01. tuning 00:50 02. • Soundboard 9.0 - Aside from a weird high frequency buzz that lasts for a few minutes at the beginning, and one or two minor tape faults this is a crisp, airy recording that EVERYONE is going to LOVE! Good bite on the guitar which seems to have a lot more “space” in the recording, yet maintains definition when it isn't too buried. Keyboards are really pronounced which helps this tape. Several cuts exist here and there, but it’s still a very interesting tape!
  • Audience 9.4 - This to me is what keeps me in the game. When I thought I had every 79 show (my favorite period) and this comes along…and….it…smokes…everything! Maybe not a perfect score in the audio dept. which by the way it is excellent (a little pegging of the meters when the band is in full on rage but it’s minor, a minor issue) but it delivers in just about every possible way. Frank’s playing is off the charts and his tone is evil. He sounds relaxed, and satisfied – all is going well. Maybe he forgot about this gig a day or two later, but I can’t get the CD out of my player (and not because it is stuck!). This just rules. Period. • Audience 8.5 - A legendary vinyl boot back in the day, this comes from a tape source and features a good recording capturing all the action in reasonable clarity and fidelity. A really fine set too!
  • Soundboard 9.2 - Super clean if just a tiny little bit of over-driving happening in the extreme lows, which will probably be cool if you are playing through a very high end system that can filter that out a little. It’s not a real “spacious” board but 90% of the time board feeds are not going to be very atmospheric.
  • Audience 8.7 - 9.2  - Compilation of 5 shows, all from 1988   (see back cover)
  • Audience/Soundboard 8.5-9.0 - A composite of shows from different locations, all from 1984;  NYC, Kansas City, and Seattle (see back cover).
  • Audience 8.8 - Another great Halloween show at the Felt Forum in NYC. This was Franks favorite Holiday and so I think he always enjoyed playing at his best and with the help of whatever line up he chose to have, the performance was always top notch.
  • This set contains both shows recorded on Halloween night at the Felt Forum in NYC back in 1974. Early Show - Audience 8.5 - Right in the middle of the road, its good, not great. Late Show - Audience 8.9 - The only way I can explain this tape is that it starts off similar to the early show and at some point the taper moves to a hotter spot and the tape explodes with Frank’s amazing guitar right in your face. Even Frank himself makes a comment about his incendiary guitar work, I won’t spoil it though.
  • Audience 8.2 - I’m probably being overly critical, I find this tape on the “harsh” side, meaning it is strong in the higher end, almost brittle. The good news is that having all your highs intact you can add filters and EQ and season to taste without losing anything in the process.
  • Soundboard 8.9 - Includes Mystery Tracks
