• Soundboard 9.3 - A very well traveled tape, seeing release as a video, as well as countless boot CD’s. The video was so-so, the audio has always been great. The show itself, not their best, and not their worst. Is it essential?  It’s a great sounding ’76 board tape (the closing gig of the tour in Europe) so, my thought is that it should be somewhat necessary in the collection. • Audience 9.3 - I am primarily interested in 1969-1973 Stones but I gotta say, this band has become very sophisticated and very tight, from the playing, setlist construction, audience interaction, you can’t deny them their place at the top of Rock Royalty because they’ve not only earned it, they continue to do it. • Audience 8.7 - A very good tape for the time, and what a good time it is for the Stones. What I really enjoyed the most about this recording is how clear Mick Taylor is in the mix. It’s not a super bright sounding tape, and it is not muddy, it is better than average but it shines in atmosphere, performance, and vibe. The band is clearly enjoying the show as much as the audience is. A keeper! • Audience 8.7 - A rattling, rambunctious recording that you will LOVE because it’s the sonic equivalent of the Stones’ personalities. Sure, yeah, this recording is imperfect but it does NOT suffer from muddiness, rather the opposite, it’s very “sharp” and sometimes cymbal crashes irritate (not always), and yet I listened all the way through and had a great time with this show. The quality is not really an issue. This is a just a classic Stones gig and the fact we have the opening acts, man, that is amazing! • Audience 9.3 - I found this to be highly immersive and exceptionally enjoyable. First of all the band sounds invigorated, breathing new life into the old catalog of songs but fiery with the newer material. I like how you can tell when the taper has to duck so as not to be discovered because at those moments (thankfully few) you hear the music suddenly seem above you and farther away, kind of cool actually. • Studio quality 9.4 - There’s some strange audio artifacts on the first song but it also could be one of the vocal mics acting funny…I could not figure it out but it’s intermittent. • Audience 8,4 - Somewhat distant, but not the kind of distant that means taper is in nose bleed section, it’s still pretty clear. Fidelity is decent, not a real “full” sound but I got everything including piano in this. There’s some hiss, in the background mostly while music is playing it’s not a bother. • Audience 8.4 - This tape has been recently surfaced and is not bad at all, however it did receive a “refresh” in the form of a re-mastering which boosted the levels a bit after notching out some noisy mids. • Audience 8.4 - This tape takes a song to find its sweet spot (relatively speaking), so I give full credit to the taper for having the sense to make sure he was going to get the best capture he could get. What I like about this is that it’s not a muddy mess, it is bright, it’s present, and I think a very worthwhile addition to the collection especially considering it’s from 1972 which was, arguably, one of the Stones’ best tours. • Audience 8.5 - Interesting tape, it’s very clear concerning Mr. Jagger! I kind of like this kind of tape, because it’s a realistic sound, like probably what your own ears would have picked up had you been there. I really get a sense of the venue, and the mood of the day. The band sound really hyped, it feels they are playing with a sense of urgency and anger. The sound does sometimes slightly fade out but it comes right back and it is not very frequent. • Myrtle Beach 1978 Audience 8.3 - This recording is not well known among collectors and has fallen through the cracks over time, the fact that it is not a great sounding tape is perhaps one reason why. That being said, I have heard much worse than this. St. Louis 1978 Audience 8.7 - The highlight of this recording is the nice live sound of Charlie Watts, with Mick being next up in the mix. Everything else is there, with decent enough clarity, but what makes the tape worth diving into is the cool “liveness” of it. It has the feel of a smaller venue (relatively speaking). It is easy to see why this was picked up by the Japanese bootleg machine, it is probably one that collectors want due to it being from the ’78 tour and reasonably good quality, and great performance. • Audience 8.5 - Pretty middle of the road, not annoying or bad, but not crystal clear. Hard to hear any detail in the guitars, it’s on the bassy side, so it’s bass and Jagger, and some locomotive sound which could be Keith and Ronnie. I mean, it is clear enough, it’s not a “bad” tape at all – in fact listening closely I am tempted to say this was pulled from a video source. You will get used to the screaming chick, thankfully her howls are spread out. Try not to get too wrapped up into the occasional drop out or glitch because you can really get sucked into this concert if you let yourself. Madison Square Garden New York, June 24th, 1975 Disc 1

  • Audience 8.4 Sourced from three different tape recordings, all audience, to make a complete show. Not that bad, but you aren’t listening to this for the high fidelity anyway. This was a celebration, a monumental event, as were pretty much all Stones shows from 1972 on. So, yeah, rowdy crowd, noise, all that and more. But, you know, I listen to these and I still enjoy them a lot. It’s the event that I hear, I really don’t care if I don’t get every detailed note I mean it’s the sloppy Stones isn’t it? • Norfolk 1972 Audience 8.6 - A rough and tumble tape that surprisingly delivers the sounds you need to be able to hear the band play. The most important thing is this: Mick Taylor is the clearest! You wouldn’t expect that in a million years I know but here it is.

Indianapolis 1972 Audience 8.3 - Low end of the totem pole recording that is represented here because it is perhaps the best source for it. Is there anything salvageable at all?  Yes. It’s distant and not distinct but for completists they will be happy to have the good source and complete their 1972 tour collections.

Audience 8.9 - Taper sitting very close, and manages to get a great recording without distorting or invasive shouting and screaming into the mic during the songs (well, maybe at the beginning of some songs). A good one, an old fashioned in your face bootleg recording of the Stones!
  • Audience 8.7 - A very well recorded show by all accounts. The sound is round, and has nice timbre. I hear everything clearly, bass sounds warm, guitars are raw and jangly…basically this sounds like the Stones in a club and it’s anything but a club!  That is saying a lot, to get a stadium recording to sound closer to you. Then, you have to listen past the announcer comments (in French) between songs, and sometimes chiming in at the end, and beginning of the next song. It’s not super well separated but everything can be heard well enough and that includes the piano (although horns are pushed back), and Mick Taylor is especially present when he solos (an added bonus!). There is no doubt that this recording must be present in every Rolling Stones fan’s collection. • Audience 8.5 - Here is perhaps one of the best captures from the tour (not quite as good as Oakland or LA but this tape has some real power).  This recording seems to be rather close to the PA, but there’s no distortion. Tape is not overly wide ranging from high to low but there’s plenty of meat and a good amount of dynamics nonetheless. Certainly this is one to get. • Soundboard 8.6 - This is a tape of contraries – on the one hand it is very forceful, with a wall of intense guitar/vocal energy with a driving bass pushing the sound through your brain – but it comes at a cost…which is dynamic range. The music is all there, you will even hear piano in the mix, and it’s just kind of lacking overall clarity and dynamics. All that being taken into consideration, what you have here is still a very good piece of history, a fun listen and one that does slightly improve (after the beginning where the sound is still finding its level/mix. • Soundboard 9.4 - This is a commercial grade soundboard recording. It is clean, professional, highly enjoyable – but I don’t know I kind of miss the atmospherics, the rush of the crowd, the occasional scream…call me an old fashioned kind of guy but sometimes the Stones are more appreciated when they are a bit…disheveled. • “Audience” studio 8.7 An amateur recording it might be, but like any rock and roll band in rehearsals you probably weren’t too worried about doing professional recordings. Some tape hiss, some lo-fi moments but all in all fascinating fly-on-the-wall stuff. See Artwork for Track Listings (sorry I didn't feel like typing it all out!)

  • Soundboard 9.3 - A good, and raw board tape which perfectly suits the ramshackle, lurching Stones sound and style. Listen to how Mick sounds especially on Shattered – it’s perfect end of story but wait a minute Bill Wyman is actually present and accounted for in a way you never hear. A great live mix high energy soundboard and a must have. THE ROLLING STONES The Kingdome Seattle, WA Oct 15, 1981 CD 1 1. Intro: Take the A Train [01:51] 2. Under My Thumb [03:49] 3. (Can't Seem To) Get A Line On You [4:24] The Sotheby’s Reel are Glyn John’s working tapes when he was the Stones' studio producer during Let it Bleed through the Sticky Fingers sessions, the Stones classic rock period.  The tape reel was auctioned some years ago at the famous Sotheby's London auction house and featured some different versions of great songs. Something to point out; "Gimme Shelter" recorded here on 15th March 1969 and featuring Nicky Hopkins on piano, a version of "You Got The Silver" sung by Jagger from 16th February and an early take of “Sister Morphine” almost without piano. But remarkable is also "Loving Cup" that starts with a striking different piano intro and lasts more than 6:30 minutes. Minimal are the differences in the mix for songs like "You Gotta Move", "Dead Flowers" and "Sister Morphine" second version that all resemble the finished "Sticky Fingers" release. On the other side of the coin we have to put the many opening riffs of both "Brown Sugar" and "Bitch" that are tirelessly repeated by an engineer that rolls back and forth the tape looking for a better echo effect, it seems. When the Stones recorded "Brown Sugar" in Muscle Shoals Studios it is said that they tried the song the whole night to get it right, we can feel how they felt while listening to all these false starts. Anyway when the tracks are completed like version number 11 of "Brown Sugar", here comes an early take with Stu on piano and no sax or takes 19 and 20 of "Bitch" where you can hear Jagger ad-libbing over Keith Richards' guitar solo. Last track offered is a primitive version of "Shine A Light" called "(Can’t Seem To) Get A Line On You" that stems from Leon Russell’s session at Olympic Studios in early October 1969 with Jagger on vocals (different words) but this take was officially released in January 1994 on a Leon Russell CD.
  • Soundboard 9.4 When you listen critically, you will discover that this was a great tour. Most of the time the band was on point, fiery, gritty, dirty, sort of like they were in 1978 maybe, which is what you want The Stones to be like. The playing in particular on this show is fantastic, and the mix allows you to get everything in great detail. Certainly this is one to have in the collection. • Private recording 8.7 - This is a cool piece of history, and the sound quality does not play that big of a role even though it is decent. It’s kind of loud, a little overloaded in spots, but just because it is raw, it doesn’t mean it ain’t great. I had this on vinyl decades ago and it was one of my favorite boots. It’s just a band, like any other (let’s pretend) jamming away in rehearsal. It’s just the coolest thing. The Rolling Stones '1968 Surrey Rehearsals' R.G. • Soundboard 9.7 - Terrific in every way this one will melt your brain. The engineer mixes this on the fly and works it out during Brown Sugar but there are some cool moments while he figures it out – like some stereo panning, and you’ll hear him juggle the bass a bit, but he gets the mix right and off we go!  The band is flying high…probably literally. • Studio Quality 8.8 - Some tape hiss present, but the quality is there, makes for an interesting listen to hear a pre-final production version of these songs. • Studio Quality 9.6 - When you look at these multi-disc sets, you have to wonder if you are just getting the same old stuff recycled over and over again…well, to be sure, there is some song duplication – no way around that. On the other hand, there’s also a lot of stuff that might be new to you, and therein lays the attraction. You have to sometimes just go for it, and in the end you end up with a more complete assemblage of materials. I found this particular set rich with alternate versions and other uncommon outtakes, and well worth the effort. • Audience 9.5 - Brilliant! After sound adjustments the PA system just cranks out the best, clearest sound you could hope for. Almost everything is clear and balanced in the mix, I mean it ain’t perfect (for instance we don’t get the best balance between Keith and Ron) but it’s darn good. The sound mix has nothing to do with how well the audio capture is but it factors slightly in the rating. • Audience 9.1 - A great sounding capture that is just a little further back than the previous night…still it’s really good because the dynamic range is wide and warm. The sound mix itself is not heavy on the guitars here, it’s really Mick and drums followed by the low rumble of the bass. Guitars are here just not the spotlight instrument which in my opinion I prefer them front and center. Alas, I found myself able to appreciate the contributions of everyone else for once.
