Audience 8.2 - A tape that has only recently surfaced, and had some problems that would have relegated it to the dustbin of history if it were not for some diligent and careful re-mastering. The before and after is a testament to the modern renaissance in the music collecting world. Treasure troves of music is being restored and remastered and a lot of that stuff would have been considered unlistenable once upon a time. This tape suffered from a narrow bandwidth incapable of containing drums, and a lot of the bottom end was a mess. It was excruciating to listen to in that state. This tape has been given a new lease on life, and thankfully so! Audience 8.7 - Pretty clear and close to the main PA it sounds like. In the face guitar, very cool drum sound, thick and hard hitting with a satisfying thud giving the music a lot of body and force. Soundboard 9.5 - Fantastic as usual, although I wasn’t crazy about Prince’s guitar tones during this period, although he sure knew how to play the damn thing! Audience 8.4 - A decent old (and by old I mean it sounds…old) tape that doesn’t have extreme highs or lows but is pretty consistent and clear enough to hear everything. The highlight to any Kinks tape of this vintage is the set list, they had some of their best songs ever and were playing all of them. Later set lists rarely visited Arthur material (there were some obligatory songs played at times) but here you get a heaping helping. THE KINKS Pierce College Woodland Hills, CA. Audience 8.4 - I would call this a very decent recording, with bass and guitar being pretty defined, which is great because I enjoy hearing distinctive bass notes. The drums are not as well defined, but they are there and come more to the fore during Red House. This is a highly recommended show, and he really pays homage to Hendrix at this gig. Studio Quality 9.6 - When you look at these multi-disc sets, you have to wonder if you are just getting the same old stuff recycled over and over again…well, to be sure, there is some song duplication – no way around that. On the other hand, there’s also a lot of stuff that might be new to you, and therein lays the attraction. You have to sometimes just go for it, and in the end you end up with a more complete assemblage of materials. I found this particular set rich with alternate versions and other uncommon outtakes, and well worth the effort. Audience 9.2 - Solid recording with just enough of an atmosphere, I mean, the only thing you might notice is the vocals having a little hall “verb” and thus not having the precision necessary to hear every word clear as a bell…but the overall sound, vibe, the concert recording is excellent and highly recommended. Audience 8.1 - Tape is not clear but also not muddy, it’s just typical of early 70’s gear not being able to handle freakishly loud rock bands. This recording highlights drums, guitars, and bass and vocals are in the background. That being said, the drums and guitars are pretty clear, and there’s plenty of the dueling guitar pyrotechnics on display. I don’t complain to have this show to hear, it’s clearly worth it to the collectors out there. Audience 7.8 – 8.5 - Why the variable rating? Because the music was excessively loud and during extreme sections of music, there is distortion right in the middle frequency. What does this mean? Well, before the re-master it meant that you could not hear what was going on except for quieter passages (which incidentally sound great, and there is a lot of it since this was a band that played complex, dynamic music) but thankfully now a lot of that has been mitigated. It is still cluttered a bit when at full volume (really gives you an idea of how loud this show must have been) but MUCH better and easier on the ears now. Is it worth it? I would say probably yes, but I know most prog enthusiasts are also critical of audio fidelity so there’s that. For me, I still got into this one, knowing the improvement made to the tape allowed me to give it a chance and I am glad I did. Audience 9.3 - Yes, it is that good – and there is, I believe, a soundboard which is the source for the pro shot video but the audience tape is used here because, quite frankly, it is better. You need the atmosphere, you need the sense of space, distance, and vibe that a well-done audience tape can produce. The dynamics are good, the sound is round and warm, lush if you will. My only complaint would be the lack of the crisp highs, but there are highs present just a little rounded off maybe. I am nitpicking!
-
Audience 8.5 - The thing with this tape is that it’s great on both ends…but in the middle it is kind of undefined. The sound begins to gell and battle itself for presence right in the middle frequency, but at the same time, when the frenzied battles end, like during quieter passages for instance, the sound is right in the pocket. It’s like the equipment wasn’t ready for the volume, but it still captures the sound in a pleasing to the ear frequency so you aren’t put off by the mix, you just strain a little to make out the details. And, the details are important in this line up because the twin guitar work at times is spectacular. I am critical of the mix for that reason, I want to hear every lick – but overall the consensus here is that this is a tape not to be missed.
