Audience 8.6 - Surprisingly decent, it’s got some “rattle and bones” but overall it is highly listenable with a good timbre to it. Anything from this period is welcome, and this old tape has not only survived the decades intact but delivers on the enjoyment meter considerably. The bonus tracks vary but are generally pretty good quality with the tell-tale sound of vinyl ever present throughout. No attempt was made to clean it up, this is due to the sensitive nature of the high end on these recordings, it would seem any real noise reduction or cleaning would compromise that. Soundboard 8.8 - This tape exhibits some compression characteristics but is overall clear enough to enjoy. It doesn’t favor any one particular frequency, and does not have a large amount of bottom end. Audience 8.7 - It’s definitely rare to find unknown Allman Brothers recordings featuring Duane, and here we have one new to circulation. The sound quality is very good, it really is from the master (obvious when you hear how clean it is) and it sounds like it has been gently mastered for optimum fidelity. A great find! Audience 9.5 - Listening to this recording made me think for a second I was listening to classic Gabriel era sans Peter Gabriel (he’s backstage nursing cold) ha ha! What I mean is, the performance and setlist is reminiscent of an earlier time because the band seem to be playing the songs as if for the first time. It’s just great to hear – and the sound quality is top shelf. Audience 8.7 - A new tape discovery and it is a good one, although not without some bumps and bruises. The tape is incomplete, missing at least the last 1/3 of the show (if judging by similar set lists from the time). The taper is close, and the sound is raw, powerful, and clear. The first few minutes are bumpy, but the tape smooths out for the majority of the show. The band is firing on all cylinders, much like the following month’s Texas Pop Festival performance. A great find! Audience 8.7 - So this is one that fell below the radar but absolutely must be considered by any Crue fan to be one of the best of the best…and technically speaking it should not be. It’s not a board tape, it’s not even the best audience tape out there – but it is one of the best from this tour AND it just friggin’ smokes as far as performance goes. It’s one of the best played shows I have ever heard by them. The atmosphere is electric, the band is feeding off it, and they just deliver one hell of a performance. The tape captures the evening quite well, and you really feel as if you are there. I love that, I want the tape to be clear and I like some dynamics but I also really like a good atmosphere – this just delivers man. The flaws have mainly to do with the ability of the equipment to supply bandwidth, which basically translates into depth or dynamics, which are present but maybe not to the degree you prefer. Boston 1970 Audience 8.4 - The separation of instruments here is rather dense, not muddy, just not to a degree one would prefer. The sound itself is not bad, I actually do hear every instrument I just want certain things prominent when it comes to this band…I really need more detail in the guitar solos. I still think this is a good one for the collection – the band is not afraid to stretch out and jam, they have tremendous freedom onstage and it shows. Landover 1973 Soundboard 9.3 - A solid recording that was broadcast over the air and features a nice wide stereo mix showing detail in the bass and crisp, crunchy guitar not to mention having another well recorded Keith Moon experience…and of course Roger is in fine form (when is he not?). Wembley 1975 Audience 8.5 - Not horrible, the music is all here in pretty clear form (I get a good picture of drums thankfully), but the highlight is the stage banter where you get a lot of stuff that will entertain for sure. I am happy say that the recording does also get better, so that once you are firmly ensconced in your listening chair you will start to get into this one more and more. Peoria 1970 Soundboard 9.3 - Excellent in all the ways you need it to be including the fact that it is from a period of time when the band was being rocketed to fame and the playing is at such a high level of intensity every night. This night is no exception. Nice to have the rarely played “It Better End Soon” on here. Seattle 1972 Audience 8.5 - A complete show in above average quality that collectors are going to savor. The sound quality is fine but for some crowded action right in the middle causing a lack of clarity (not muddy, bid difference!) but the EQ is good (balanced) and the sonic level is very high but not distorted which makes for an electric kind of tape. Chicago 1973 Audience 8.7 -This tape has some of that big hall echo on vocals but I like how clear it is otherwise. It is one of those tapes that allow you to get a good sense of what it probably sounded like there. Soundboard 8.9 - Mixed for television broadcast, the sound is a little better than your average videotape source audio in that it is not nearly as compressed sounding. Vocals are mixed hotter than normal but not too bad, some occasional channel disturbances that last seconds and are resolved and are few and far between so overall this is a real good one. Soundboard 9.2 - Strong and clear as a board should be, but probably not mixed for a live album release, more for front of house sound which explains the interesting way the two guitars are panned…I rather like it. This allows you to really get the musicality of the performance and that is where this tape literally takes off. The playing is top shelf and worthy of paying serious attention to. On a side note, every now and then there will be a tape problem that resolves itself right away and I think this is present on the master. It is not a deal breaker at all, it happens few and far between. Audience 8.4 - A little lo-fi here but guitar is up front followed by drums which you can hear well. Some tape hiss present, bass is in a good place not too boomy and complements the guitar sound well. Leslie is playing more fluid here, probably because RCMH is known for good acoustics so he must have had good feedback. Crowd is on his side, he owned New York without a doubt. I feel like this recording would benefit greatly from a good re-mastering, hiss reduction, etc. because it has a decent enough sonic foundation. Recorded in 1977 by a group of musicians who brought different perspectives into the equation. Very much an English folk psyche type of record but features a lot of Eastern influence with the introduction of Sitar, and tablas (and other sounds), an ethereal vibe permeates as Moog synthesizers weave in and out of the music. Lots of heavy, mystical vibe on this one. -

Audience 8.4 - An incredibly loud tape, bordering on catastrophe but not quite going over the red line of doom. What I mean is, the tape is just way overloaded, but it hangs together miraculously just enough to be able go ahead and listen through…although at times it’s so intense you just have to turn the volume down a bit. Now, when you get to, say, The Rain Song – yeah, the tape shines…it’s just that kind of tape. NOTE: After the tape flip in Rain Song, the taper seems to have been able to dial down the recording level a little bit, it seems to get a little more manageable. Myrtle Beach 1978 Audience 8.3 - This recording is not well known among collectors and has fallen through the cracks over time, the fact that it is not a great sounding tape is perhaps one reason why. That being said, I have heard much worse than this. St. Louis 1978 Audience 8.7 - The highlight of this recording is the nice live sound of Charlie Watts, with Mick being next up in the mix. Everything else is there, with decent enough clarity, but what makes the tape worth diving into is the cool “liveness” of it. It has the feel of a smaller venue (relatively speaking). It is easy to see why this was picked up by the Japanese bootleg machine, it is probably one that collectors want due to it being from the ’78 tour and reasonably good quality, and great performance. Chicago 1971 FM Radio broadcast 8.9 - Some generation loss and general passing of time has degraded the sound slightly but this version received a “freshening” which helps a lot. So, it’s a bona fide solid addition to anyone’s collection. Memphis 1971 Audience 8.3 - I had the luxury of being able to hear this tape before it was remastered and that would be the only way you can really appreciate how that simply removed what sounded like a layer of muck and grime, and revealed a shimmering sound that leapt out of the speakers… I am talking of course about Duane’s guitar. So, if you want to appreciate again what the guitar playing of Duane Allman was really all about then this recording will still cause shivers down your spine. Is it a great recording? Not really, but there’s something here that still pulls you in (mainly it’s Duane). Austin 1971 Soundboard 9.0 - A tape that, while incomplete (some songs fade in and fade out, mainly the first and last) still has to be carefully considered when examining the few remaining live recordings featuring Duane. MOR 1985 Audience 8.6 - A strong recording that gets off to a funky start (at one point a mic jack unplugs and one channel drops but it lasts only a minute). I prefer this to a dry soundboard to be honest. It’s not a perfect audience recording but it sure does deliver on energy and atmosphere! I like it. Tokyo 1987 Audience 8.7 - Nice atmosphere on this tape, and the audio comes through especially vocals and bass actually has a nice round sound to it. Guitars are not super distinct, but thankfully the solos are really soaring above and captured pretty well. I like the snare drum here, whoever was mixing this show really must have had a hard-on for the drummer ha ha! Long Beach 1978 Audience 9.3 - This recording could easily pass as a KBFH radio broadcast it is very well done, but my only complaint is one that probably has nothing to do with the tape itself but rather the stage mix. If you are a guitar guy, you will want more guitars in the mix – that being said you are going to be getting breathtaking keyboards, vocals, and solid drums and a bass that is there holding it together but not booming or rumbling. All in all, this one is quite different than other bootleg tapes of the era, it has a professionalism to it that you won’t hear often. I say this is probably a must have for Styx collectors. Oakland 1978 Audience 8.4 - Sadly, what tries to be a very good recording just doesn’t quite reach that status due mainly to what I believe is the wrong style of microphone used. To my ears, it sounds like a condenser mic, and consequently the audio is bunched up into the middle frequency leaving indistinct instrument separation. That being said, it’s “trying” to be very good and in spots it really is – mainly during quieter passages where you can tell the taper did bring pretty good gear. Audience 8.6 - I wanted to give this a better rating, and truth is it ain’t bad, but it is a little distant and the music lacks punch. It is clear enough though, and audience actually helps propel the energy level up a notch. Austin music fans are always up for a great concert and really show their enthusiasm. Also, I think the set list around this time was put together very well and flows nicely. Audience 8.6 - OK, so this is one you might not be too familiar with, but it’s from ’79 so you know you gotta have it…so what’s the catch? Does it suck? Naw man, this recording actually captures THE EVENT in a way that sounds so realistic you’d think you were there. Now, here’s the catch – poor taper’s gear just was not quite up to the challenge of the volume and so there’s the little tiniest bit of distortion that affects one very narrow piece of the middle bandwidth that thankfully is not the annoying kind of distortion, it’s not a deal breaker. It does mean you may not wish to crank this up too loud as the louder it gets the more that frequency announces its presence to your ears. That being said, if you want complete immersion this tape provides it and then some. For that reason I think you have to dive in, I did and I really do appreciate this kind of tape. Audience 9.1 - A really really nice one here – and do not be dismayed that it is from 1984 because quite frankly this shreds. I love the atmosphere, when you can capture a show with plenty of atmosphere and still retain great dynamics in the sound of the band that means you have great gear and great seats! By the way I should point out that this has been listed as a soundboard elsewhere, it's great don't get me wrong but I am not 100% sure of the claim. Audience 9.3 - A solid recording in a small venue that is very intimate, in fact it sounds like the drums aren’t even going through the mains they sound so natural.
