New York 1973 SDBRD 9.2 - Excellent professionally recorded show. It’s easy to hear how it was that his star took off and exploded just a few short years later. New Orleans 1973 Audience 8.8 - A strong, clear, atmospheric recording (easy to put yourself in the taper’s seats). I always thought some bands sound better if they aren’t captured through the board…Frampton has such good stage presence and there’s always such a good audience report…audience tapes of excellent quality are the best listening experience imho. NY 1978 SDBRD 9.3 - Really nice sounding, warm, well mixed. A couple of songs fade in, and a couple fade out, so that is unusual in my opinion for a board tape but it’s most of the songs, it isn’t drastic…and all the songs are instrumental anyway. A great one for the collector! Nuremberg 1980 SDBRD 9.5 - Another really good tape and excellent show, with minor complaint being a couple of fade ins and a couple of fade outs which only really may have an effect on those people who are intimately familiar with the band’s material. Disc 1 Soundboard 8.8 - This sounds like it could be from a television special as it has that telltale compression, and to my ears it sounds dated but in a cool way. A little narrow but clear and retains a sharpness, so you get every nuance of guitar but at the expense of any real bottom end – still is very good for the early vintage. Disc 2 Soundboard 9.6 except last two songs Audience 9.2 - This disc showcases some of the very best stuff I’ve heard, really a joy and fine quality too. Disc 3 SDBRD 9.7 - I hate to say it, but this is almost too good. At times though, guitar is mixed a little low, but it seems it’s only when he is on a certain setting on his guitar for whatever reason. Mostly it’s mixed real well. The audio fidelity is crystal clear, I think it needs more atmosphere…although to be fair Roy’s guitar creates that in spades. London 1978 Audience 8.5 - This is a show that has seen limited release as a bootleg CD but I have to assume one that only hardcore fans ever purchased. Now, many years later and thanks to the revolution in collecting shows, many of these sub-par recordings have re-emerged with the layers of muck and grime removed, and previously unheard frequencies and sounds uncovered. This is one such tape, and might I say it is really not that bad! I specifically highlight this tour because of the amazing set lists, so when “new” tapes surface, I think it is just great for the collectors as they rediscover this excellent period of Rush. Note: The filler on disc 2 is St. Paul 1978 which is only a fragment of the show as that is all that exists. Milwaukee 1978 Audience 8.3 - Another rare recording that would not have been given a second thought, due to the extremely poor dynamics and recording quality, has surfaced. This tape source has been thoroughly re-mastered and revealed itself to be listenable. Careful re-mastering is taking otherwise dismal recordings and making them to where you really have to stop and give pause, because it is yet further proof that we are living during an amazing time for collectors. The set lists during this time period are simply awesome, and the band is just firing on all cylinders, as they also were carrying over into 1979. Audience 8.2 - Not the best tape by any stretch but it’s also a scarcity…very few World Invasion Tour tapes survive and this one does have a couple of things going for it –first, it is NOT muddy! It’s not distinctive, but that is not the same as muddiness. It’s a “clear” tape that is just not from close up, and is not done on professional gear. I started listening to this thinking “oh man” but believe it or not you will find a reason to continue on through the whole show, especially when Dave rants about his little problem in Cincinnati the night before. Stockholm 1972 SDBRD 9.1 - Some minor tape hiss present but otherwise it’s quite good for its age. It was recorded well, I mean, the sound to me is very organic and that suits this style of music. Princeton 1973 SDBRD 9.3 - First thing you’ll notice is the lively, massive drums, and a good, round, full bass followed by sharp and clear guitar tone. A very very nice board tape! Nottingham 1975 SDBRD 8.7 - A somewhat subdued sound (tape age?) but pretty clear and could maybe just use a little EQ to bring out the frequencies…and also a little volume boost but other than that it’s a good tape that could be great. There’s a lot of communication with the crowd, more so than usual. Audience 8.7 and SDBRD 8.8/9.1 - Both sources are clean and decent, the first disc is actually a radio broadcast but they used a tape source that was recorded by a fan in the audience! Sounds a little distant but clear with good atmospherics, just unusual to know how they did it. The other disc contains a board tape made at the Fillmore which is very good but more than that really shows the crossing over the line by “country” artists into uncharted territory. This music reminds me of what would happen if you took The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Beatles and told them to pretend they are Eagles flying around the Bay Area. Montrose Boston 1974 Aud 8.6 - A new master tape source used for this one, and the tape is very clear although the hall acoustics are not optimal but it ROCKS! It’s decent and a lot of fun. Spooky Tooth Boston 1974 Audience 8.5 - A master tape source obtained for this presentation and aside from the acoustics of the venue and the sound mix itself, this is a good tape and can be enjoyed. Humble Pie Boston 1974 Audience 8.5 - This recording is from a master source and is clear, but the house mix and the venue make it hard to get that separation of instruments that make for a better experience. Audience 8.2 - What was once completely unlistenable has now revealed itself to be a tape that contains music and audible sounds…and sound that can be deciphered easily…although clearly not in any kind of high fidelity. Still what you get from this tape is a VERY obvious indication that Bowie knew where music was headed, and in real time is literally creating a new genre and the audience is in pure ecstasy. Fillmore East 1970 Soundboard 8.8 - Clear although not bristling with perfection is a very good early period SMB recording Honolulu 1970 Soundboard 8.8 - A tape that needs one song to dial in the live mix but then gets much better. Still, it’s very good but not sparkling and bright…just good enough to rank pretty high in the category of the formative Steve Miller anthology of concert tapes. San Rafael 1970 Soundboard 9.1 - This is a really nice recording that exemplifies why it is so cool to hear tapes of an artists’ earlier career works before they made it to the big time. This certainly shows the vulnerability and the possibility at the same time. An artist who is still not 100% convincing but clearly has the tool set necessary to advance…and advance he did! While there are always some downsides to matrixing analog recordings that have been manually synchronized, it is hoped that the benefits, such as the improved stereo dimension, of the results outweigh those deficiencies. Further lesser quality audience sources than those described below also exist but were not used. AUD source #1: The master was reportedly a TDK SA 90 cassette, which matches the 45 + 45 minutes which are extant and captured tracks 2-8 & 12 and parts of 1, 9, 11, 13. Winston Remaster used for the first part (which is unmatrixed on that version). Best of the audience recordings overall, recorded close to the stage towards one side. The guitar is somewhat buried here. AUD source #2: A lower/medium quality cassette recording at a greater distance to the stage, used only to patch missing AUD sections of tracks 1 & 9-11 (and the encore break before 14). AUD source #3: Captured most of the concert except for the introduction and notably two gaps in DAC. The master reported to have been recorded with Sony mics to Uher Report reel-to-reel. Close to the quality of AUD.1 but with a different sound balance (guitar is prominent, vocals somewhat buried) and recorded towards the other side of the stage. Matrixing with AUD.1 thus allows reproducing the occasional stereo panning effects of the house mix (which are not present on the SBD): guitar break in Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, bow solo in DAC, Theremin in WLL. SBD source: Apparently a 60 minute cassette which contains most of tracks 11-14. However, several minutes of 11/DAC & 13/WLL are missing, as the tape was not flipped immediately when the side or reel A ran out. There was probably another cassette on which the first hour of the concert was recorded (or copied), including the beginning of DAC, with the engineer likely missing some two minutes of the song between the cassettes, after the first one stopped and until recording resumed on a fresh tape. The reason why only the second cassette is available (for this and also certain other dates) is perhaps that someone in or with the band wanted a listening copy of just the songs with improvisation. The mix that was recorded is not exactly the same as what was played over the PA, as some of the delay/reverb effects (particularly on the vocals), as well as the panning, heard on the audience recordings are not present. Track by track breakdown: tr.01: AUD.2+1. AUD.2 contains half a minute more of the pre-show compared to AUD.1, none of which is on AUD.3. 02-08: AUD.1+3. SBD not available for the first part of the show but AUD.1 & 3 run practically without breaks until the end of BYAS. 09: AUD.1/2+3. AUD.1 has breaks during the intro and its side A completely cuts out @ 1:30 into TSRTS; the taper evidently did not flip the tape and resume recording until well into DAC which gap has here been patched with AUD.2. 10: AUD.2+3. AUD.1 thus does not exist for The Rain Song; the lower quality tape of AUD.2 used to substitute. 11: AUD.2/1+3. AUD.1 continues recording @ 5:00 while AUD.3 cuts out around 6:45 for one minute. Both gaps in DAC have been patched by matrixing with AUD.2, except for the section between roughly 2:50 and 4:00 where that tape itself has a discontinuity. 11: SBD & AUD.1+3. SBD cuts in about 15 seconds after AUD.1, i.e., around 5:15 into DAC from which point on it is the main source for the matrix but augmented with AUD.1 & 3 - and some patching from AUD.2 - as far as they are available. 12: SBD & AUD.1+3. AUD.3 has short cuts in the introduction; SBD cuts out after STH ends as the tape side ran out. 13: AUD.1+3 / SBD & AUD.1+3. Side B of the AUD.1 cassette runs out around 10:15 into WLL but SBD continued recording 4 minutes before that. 13-14: SBD & AUD.3. The segment containing the last 13 minutes of WLL and nearly all of Heartbreaker is therefore a matrix of SBD and AUD.3 since AUD.1 was no longer recording. The encore break is largely cut on both sources between the songs: AUD.3 misses about 2:20 of atmosphere while SBD loses only 1:30 and has the first notes of Heartbreaker intact. For the sake of completeness the missing part has again been patched from AUD.2 although the change in sound is noticeable. -
