Released on vinyl, this features excellent multi-layered guitar, ripping bass and drum work, and Ian Gillan inspired vocals with dark, haunting, somewhat blues-tinged hard rock songs. Recorded in Rosenberg, TX. only a single 45 rpm was released, but the tracks on the 7" were from a previous demo recording done in 1974. This and much more is featured on the CD version, where you can hear for yourself why the world should have heard of the name Ottis Coleman, but hopefully now they will get the chance. For fans of Trapeze, Deep Purple. -

Soundboard 9.0 - A mix that captures the band firing on all cylinders, certainly you have to say that Alice Cooper had total command of performance throughout his career and if you worried that his drinking might affect him onstage, well listen to these early shows. I hear no signs of inebriation. In fact this is extremely tight and strong performance wise. -
Soundboard 9.2 - Very direct and forceful sounding, but a touch harsh I would say. Still I am being picky, it’s a damn good one! -
Pro 9.0 - This recording is great for the time period but it seems that it has been remastered to remove what was probably a great deal of hiss. There’s some left here, but I gotta say this is still one hell of a nice recording. -
Audience 7.3 - A rip-roaring, over the top onslaught of greasy rock and roll captured painfully close to the PA. Sounds like this may be lifted from vinyl, and there’s tape noise artifacts present. But, all that taken into account, this is still a very good time and not painful on the ears despite the volume (I think someone attempted to remaster this but it can use one more time). -
Pro 9.0 - Both are excellent, bright, snappy recordings. Goes without saying if you don’t have this you should get it! -
FM Broadcast 9.3 - Crisp and airy, with hardly any complaints but if I were to do so, I would have toned down the guitars actually as I found sometimes they were actually too up front…some people would prefer that though. A great one no matter. -
Disc 1 & 2 - Audience 8.6 Disc 3 - Audience 8.9 Great sound mix here and frequency range ... you can crank this one! -
Aud 8.5 and PRO RADIO 9.6 - The Brisbane is a raucous, loud, crashing kind of show/recording that gives one a sense of sitting on the side of the stage and watching them. The BBC material is awesome! -
FM Broadcast 8.8 - Once you get past the first song which has some channel dropouts, it’s all systems go full tilt boogie for reals. This is just flat out awesome! -
Studio Quality 9.5 - The average rating here in the mid 9.0’s because except for the occasional minor hiss, this material consists of professionally recorded, live in studio sessions. Good to have it all in a well constructed collection like this.

Audience 8.5 (discs 1 & 2) FM Broadcast 8.7 - Well this is odd, you have an “in the pit” audience tape that actually delivers a good, fun trip because it is immersive despite not being a full bodied audio like you want – it is definitely worth it for the ride though…but that brings us to the FM broadcast of the show…how is it that I find myself enjoying the audience tape more? Yes the FM is cleaner and all, but it’s very limited and not quite like an AM broadcast but for goodness sake where’s the bass and drums? It’s clearly the Tony and Ian show here – I think someone ought to matrix these together because then you might have something. FM Broadcast 9.8 - Just about as good as it can get, this captures the moment and freezes it forever in such granular detail that it feels like you are sitting right next to Dickie’s amp. It makes you appreciate his playing like never before. I mean, I play the guitar, but I have no concept of how you turn it into an extension of yourself to the degree that it is practically impossible to make even the slightest mistake. Not that his playing is perfection, it almost is, but just that he uses the instrument to convey so much feeling that it is impossible even to tell if he ever misses a note or phrases something wrong. Does that make sense? NOTE: The artwork shows disc two with only the last two tracks but the set has been tracked to include "Jessica" and "The Way Love Goes" on disc 2...so the artwork will not be changed to reflect the song order it just is what it is. Audience 9.7 - both of these shows were recorded onto a 4-track machine which is clearly obvious when you hear just how crystal this stuff sounds, as well as the separation of instruments. Some minor stuff does occur with the old tape in a couple spots but that passes without much fuss, it’s hard to knock these recordings but I do have to let you know what I hear. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Grand Funk Railroad Hawaii 1971 - Soundboard 9.1 A scarcity of prime era recordings mandate that anyone remotely interested in this band pursue any and all recordings that are A. Soundboard and/or B. decent audience for the simple reason that this band kicked ass. This is a true rarity – a soundboard and, yes, it kicks major ass. Grand Funk Railroad Boston 1971 Audience 8.7 - A very good tape surfaces and you can actually hear everything pretty clearly. This band played very loud (as did any self-respecting heavy rock band of the early 70’s) and consequently unless you smuggled in superior quality machinery you weren’t likely to be able to capture this sound with any clarity. This taper had better than average gear it seems, and even though it’s still somewhat distant from the stage, it is a tape that allows the listener to experience an entire show without struggling too hard to make out what is going on. Audience 9.2 - A lovely, spacious, almost elegant recording even though it is originating somewhere in the middle I would guess. The sound feels slightly above you, but it’s warm and pleasant. The only knock is that taper missed a little of a couple of songs due to hassles from security. I can forgive that, at least they didn’t seize his gear. Good job taper! It's highlighted by a respectful crowd that rarely intrudes while the band is performing but very enthusiastic between songs. Wish I was there. Audience 8.8 - This is NOT the Monsters of Rock show, it’s actually the last DLR (classic era) show and it’s pretty good! It’s not super close up or terribly far from stage, seems to be in a nice spot and everything is clear with decent dynamics. Now, it’s a recording from a rowdy crowd but even with that I felt they did not ruin this or intrude unnecessarily – in fact it seemed they wanted to listen to the band and not hold conversations or stupid hooting and whistling during songs. Stockholm 1983 Audience 8.9 - This tape starts off kind of average and slowly but surely keeps getting better until what we have is a very good tape of a really good show. As most already know, any good tape of this line up is VERY welcome as it showcases what I consider a great band – I did not say a great Black Sabbath because you can’t get away from Ian’s obvious vocal inflections that inevitably recall his old band. That being said if you listen to this without that bias you realize how good this BAND was in 1983. Paris 1983 Soundboard 9.1 - A most welcomed thing amongst Black Sabbath collectors without question is this board tape with the Ian Gillan line up. I love the material they recorded on Born Again, this is almost the logical progression from Technical Ecstasy, to me anyway. The music is more ideally suited to Ian Gillan’s vocals than it would have been to Ronnie James Dio and I think that is obvious. Black Sabbath Quebec City 1983 Audience 8.9 - I like this tape because you really get to hear and appreciate what the bass is all about in Sabbath and it is here in excellent detail. Everyone shines, it’s great to have this abundance of riches because this short-lived period of Black Sabbath is certainly one of the most unique sounding. Soundboard 9.2 - I think this right here is as good as it will get to a complete Tommy Bolin Purple gig in soundboard quality and, here’s the important thing, reasonably cohesive playing. To be honest, after listening to this, it’s kind of apparent that Deep Purple was probably not the best vehicle for Tommy’s talents. Not that he can’t play, but that Deep Purple’s music was too one dimensional. That being said it is still pretty good despite the erratic mix – sometimes guitar is up front and sometimes it is buried. I need atmosphere, I want to feel the space around me, the venue itself is a part of the event. Audience tapes of high quality can sometimes deliver more atmosphere than the best soundboard, and sometimes it’s necessary if you want to relive an event to have that atmosphere included in the recording.
