Audience 8.2 - Not the best tape by any stretch but it’s also a scarcity…very few World Invasion Tour tapes survive and this one does have a couple of things going for it –first, it is NOT muddy! It’s not distinctive, but that is not the same as muddiness. It’s a “clear” tape that is just not from close up, and is not done on professional gear. I started listening to this thinking “oh man” but believe it or not you will find a reason to continue on through the whole show, especially when Dave rants about his little problem in Cincinnati the night before. Soundboard 9.4 - As always the performance is stellar, and even during the early 80’s Prince had a great sense of tone and did not plasticize his guitar sound. There are some tasty and snarling moments that make you think “what was the audience thinking during this solo?” You know, the early 80’s typical Prince fan probably had no interest in fuzzed out Hendrix style soaring guitar solos mixed in with their pop/soul/funk music. Audience 9.2 - This is a very well done Audience recording from very close to the stage. The music is clear and bright, and the mix of all instruments is really great too. I particularly think the drums sound very real, percussive, and just drive this performance in a very non “laid back” sort of way. Guitar has a lively tone, and as a bonus you get a finally that features Carlos Santana. Soundboard 8.9 - Mixed for television broadcast, the sound is a little better than your average videotape source audio in that it is not nearly as compressed sounding. Vocals are mixed hotter than normal but not too bad, some occasional channel disturbances that last seconds and are resolved and are few and far between so overall this is a real good one. Peoria 1970 Soundboard 9.3 - Excellent in all the ways you need it to be including the fact that it is from a period of time when the band was being rocketed to fame and the playing is at such a high level of intensity every night. This night is no exception. Nice to have the rarely played “It Better End Soon” on here. Seattle 1972 Audience 8.5 - A complete show in above average quality that collectors are going to savor. The sound quality is fine but for some crowded action right in the middle causing a lack of clarity (not muddy, bid difference!) but the EQ is good (balanced) and the sonic level is very high but not distorted which makes for an electric kind of tape. Chicago 1973 Audience 8.7 -This tape has some of that big hall echo on vocals but I like how clear it is otherwise. It is one of those tapes that allow you to get a good sense of what it probably sounded like there. Audience 8.8 - A surprisingly good tape here, with pretty much everything you require including really great atmosphere. The flaws have mainly to do with the ability of the equipment to supply bandwidth, which basically translates into depth or dynamics, which are present but maybe not to the degree you prefer. Audience 9.5 - Listening to this recording made me think for a second I was listening to classic Gabriel era sans Peter Gabriel (he’s backstage nursing cold) ha ha! What I mean is, the performance and setlist is reminiscent of an earlier time because the band seem to be playing the songs as if for the first time. It’s just great to hear – and the sound quality is top shelf. Soundboard 8.8 - This tape shows some signs of age but it is holding its own and is strong in many aspects. The only thing that prevents the higher rating is that there is some “dirt” present, what I mean is just some extracurricular noise present in the mid band, nothing that destroys any enjoyment at all – it is a strong tape as I said, but for a soundboard you expect purity and this one is not pure. Still, I think the setlist answers the question “should I”? Yes. You should. This is a kick ass show and the Zeppelin covers just put it over the top. Heart Waukegan, IL. Audience 9.1 - Recorded with equipment that sounds like it was well beyond the standard consumer grade stuff. Nice and warm, capturing the band close, with some nice detail, and the atmosphere is palpable. I mean, quite literally this recording is a time machine – you seem to be physically transported to 1974, to this small venue in Boston (actually Cambridge, a suburb of Boston). Very nice! This is the follow up album to the recent reissue of Ruff Mix, the band's official studio offering released in 1975. Culled from the band's personal archives, the music was saved from destruction (literally the master tapes burned in a fire and barely survived) and remixed to present a picture of the band just prior to recording Ruff Mix, and then a few years after its release. The CD features late guitarist Richard Heath (Oz Knozz, Lady Killer, Lic) on side 1 and Rick Wheeler on side 2. -
Audience 8.4 - A very rare tape here, new to circulation and not bad, but not great either. What is the downside? Recorded towards the back of the hall, and some consistent tape noise that crowds the middle a little. The upside? It’s actually not bad sounding for all that was against it, you get used to it and after a few minutes you realize it’s very listenable. The crowd is pretty rowdy, I heard fireworks going off at one point – and they really love their Kinks in Cape Cod. I like this for the collectors, they will appreciate it. Audience 8.9 - This is a most excellent effort to capture what had to be an insanely loud concert on non-professional equipment. A massive sound is on display and you can get a much better sense of what the keyboard player Steve Knight brought to the table. All praise to the taper! Audience 8.6 - What this old tape delivers in terms of sonic clarity and atmosphere for such a vintage ZZ Top performance has to rank it at the top of the list of must-haves for ANY collector of this band’s music. Yes, it is nothing short of a revelation, uncovering a lot of the muck, dirt, mud and distortion that most, if not all, of the early and mid ‘70’s bootlegs seem to have present. That is not to say this tape is “excellent” or even “great” as far as how it would be measured in a laboratory, but the lab is your own ear, and your mental tape measure for previous examinations of early Top. What I am saying is, this tape allows you to hear not just Billy’s immense tone, but also the notes played on bass, and they are separate just enough to let you get a bona fide realistic feel for what this concert sounded like – you can sense position, size (of venue), PA, crowd, pretty much all of the elements of a gig in a VERY reasonably well documented way by taper. Some hiccups, nothing major or too distracting and thankfully brief, and some between song hollering near the mic but music comes through without much frustration and man, that tone! Oh, and it must have been a really good night for the guys, they are playing fluidly and in high spirits. Kudos to whoever remastered this gem, or I should say whoever remastered this tape created a real gem. Audience 8.6 - It’s hard to figure out why there are few ’75 and ’76 period recordings of The Kinks. Perhaps it is due to the confusion among their fan base as to the new direction the band were going in with the big stage productions and “concept” albums. Looking back, one can now appreciate the artistic “stretch” going on as I am sure it became quite tedious having to bang out those mid ‘60’s chart toppers one after the other, even though they still throw in one or two. That being said, this is quite a nice find! A complete show, well recorded, and well performed. Radio Broadcast & Audience 8.8/8.5 - The radio material sounds its age but is a fine document in good enough shape to give you a deeper appreciation for this hugely influential band. The audience material is from a small club, and therefore does not suffer stadium sound problems meaning you can hear everyone pretty solid especially the guitar which is great. I am happy to be able to hear these recordings knowing a little background on the band and how they forged their own path in the music industry. A bit of ancient historical importance on the 1974 show, Judas Priest opened and come on at the end to jam with Budgie making it the first recorded appearance of Judas Priest on tape! Audience 8.3 - Both shows recorded by same taper so sound quality consistent throughout. This is another one of those “right in the middle of the action” tapes, where literally you sense the surroundings, and settle yourself in to what will be a wild night of rock and roll music. Quality is decent, without too much in the way of dynamics, but also this is not a muddy, crappy recording, it’s just not showcasing a wide range of tones. Audience 8.2 - A somewhat average tape that is brand new to circulation and captures a good time for Lou when he had some great songs and great players with him. Plus side of the recording is that it is low gen and clear enough to hear the band although keyboards are quite behind in the stage mix. Lou is more prominent, with bass and guitar next. A good tape for a lo-fi cassette recorder snuck into the venue in the mid 70’s. All discs are Audience recordings of VERY GOOD quality. All sound bright, and with the exception of maybe one show (which sounds a little crowded up in the middle frequency), are pretty wide and clear. Having listened to all of it, I have to rate this set as spectacularly fun to listen to, it's just a really good time for the band who are riding high on their successes but not yet ready to relax too much. Having a good time, but meaning business too. Great stuff! CD 1 Audience 8.5 - A very good sounding tape here, nothing that annoys the ears, in fact it is clear with a solid impact vocal and smoothly integrated guitar/bass. I did notice some phasing effect but it’s not even a bother at all, in fact in this case it adds some atmospherics. Solid! CD2 Audience 8.7 - Slightly more distant than the previous show but certainly has good clarity, a more even mix as far as the drums being at the same level as guitar, bass, and vocals. It gains points in the overall clarity, sounding like a master was used as there is virtually no tape noise, no mid-band muddiness, really CLEAR! Turn up the volume because it sounds way much better at loud levels. Audience 8.4 - A barn-burner gig and maybe one of the best of the tour (recorded, anyway) with some unbelievable jamming. The audio is decent, some mid band clutter was equalized to allow less noise and more music to permeate your space. I think that made the difference with this tape. It’s worth getting and will impress you even more than you might already have been with these guys. Always gave their best. Soundboard 8.3 - I found a lot to sink into with this very early Megadeth recording. First off, it’s better sounding than the old tape that floated around for a while, as someone took the time to re-master it and pitch correct it which makes a big difference. It’s still a little narrow and thin, but you’ll be blown away by what you are hearing, if you have even a mild interest in the formative years of Megadeth, this show is a must. Audience 8.2 and 8.4 - Both recordings, while limited in their own respective ways, are both MUST HAVES for the early Motley Crue collectors because they are pretty listenable, with the nod going to the later show even though it is narrower in its bandwidth (it is, however, much clearer). The ‘81 show is a little cluttered in the center, but has broader range and sounds “hot” so to speak.
