Audience 9.1 - A really really nice one here – and do not be dismayed that it is from 1984 because quite frankly this shreds. I love the atmosphere, when you can capture a show with plenty of atmosphere and still retain great dynamics in the sound of the band that means you have great gear and great seats! By the way I should point out that this has been listed as a soundboard elsewhere, it's great don't get me wrong but I am not 100% sure of the claim. Audience 8.6 - OK, so this is one you might not be too familiar with, but it’s from ’79 so you know you gotta have it…so what’s the catch? Does it suck? Naw man, this recording actually captures THE EVENT in a way that sounds so realistic you’d think you were there. Now, here’s the catch – poor taper’s gear just was not quite up to the challenge of the volume and so there’s the little tiniest bit of distortion that affects one very narrow piece of the middle bandwidth that thankfully is not the annoying kind of distortion, it’s not a deal breaker. It does mean you may not wish to crank this up too loud as the louder it gets the more that frequency announces its presence to your ears. That being said, if you want complete immersion this tape provides it and then some. For that reason I think you have to dive in, I did and I really do appreciate this kind of tape. Audience 8.6 - I wanted to give this a better rating, and truth is it ain’t bad, but it is a little distant and the music lacks punch. It is clear enough though, and audience actually helps propel the energy level up a notch. Austin music fans are always up for a great concert and really show their enthusiasm. Also, I think the set list around this time was put together very well and flows nicely. Long Beach 1978 Audience 9.3 - This recording could easily pass as a KBFH radio broadcast it is very well done, but my only complaint is one that probably has nothing to do with the tape itself but rather the stage mix. If you are a guitar guy, you will want more guitars in the mix – that being said you are going to be getting breathtaking keyboards, vocals, and solid drums and a bass that is there holding it together but not booming or rumbling. All in all, this one is quite different than other bootleg tapes of the era, it has a professionalism to it that you won’t hear often. I say this is probably a must have for Styx collectors. Oakland 1978 Audience 8.4 - Sadly, what tries to be a very good recording just doesn’t quite reach that status due mainly to what I believe is the wrong style of microphone used. To my ears, it sounds like a condenser mic, and consequently the audio is bunched up into the middle frequency leaving indistinct instrument separation. That being said, it’s “trying” to be very good and in spots it really is – mainly during quieter passages where you can tell the taper did bring pretty good gear. Almost but not quite, but still qualifying as a good addition to a Styx fan’s collection (and great as a “bonus” concert in this set). SDBRD 8.8 - A rollicking good time is what you are going to get here, maybe not the ideal sound mix (although it gets better), but this is a band that despite all outward appearance is quite talented musically (and seem to be quite natural performing live on stage). You will love the music and even the on stage banter…perhaps this band was the role model for Steel Panther? Ha ha! MOR 1985 Audience 8.6 - A strong recording that gets off to a funky start (at one point a mic jack unplugs and one channel drops but it lasts only a minute). I prefer this to a dry soundboard to be honest. It’s not a perfect audience recording but it sure does deliver on energy and atmosphere! I like it. Tokyo 1987 Audience 8.7 - Nice atmosphere on this tape, and the audio comes through especially vocals and bass actually has a nice round sound to it. Guitars are not super distinct, but thankfully the solos are really soaring above and captured pretty well. I like the snare drum here, whoever was mixing this show really must have had a hard-on for the drummer ha ha! Chicago 1971 FM Radio broadcast 8.9 - Some generation loss and general passing of time has degraded the sound slightly but this version received a “freshening” which helps a lot. So, it’s a bona fide solid addition to anyone’s collection. Memphis 1971 Audience 8.3 - I had the luxury of being able to hear this tape before it was remastered and that would be the only way you can really appreciate how that simply removed what sounded like a layer of muck and grime, and revealed a shimmering sound that leapt out of the speakers… I am talking of course about Duane’s guitar. So, if you want to appreciate again what the guitar playing of Duane Allman was really all about then this recording will still cause shivers down your spine. Is it a great recording? Not really, but there’s something here that still pulls you in (mainly it’s Duane). Austin 1971 Soundboard 9.0 - A tape that, while incomplete (some songs fade in and fade out, mainly the first and last) still has to be carefully considered when examining the few remaining live recordings featuring Duane. Audience 8.4 - This is a hard one to set aside, it’s an uncommon tape that sounds very good. It’s bright, and atmospheric (not echoey!) without any big hall boominess. The real selling point here is that both Ozzy and Randy are the focus in this live mix. I say go ahead and grab it if you want to hear the very early Blizzard Of Ozz on tour ‘cause this is a great find. Myrtle Beach 1978 Audience 8.3 - This recording is not well known among collectors and has fallen through the cracks over time, the fact that it is not a great sounding tape is perhaps one reason why. That being said, I have heard much worse than this. St. Louis 1978 Audience 8.7 - The highlight of this recording is the nice live sound of Charlie Watts, with Mick being next up in the mix. Everything else is there, with decent enough clarity, but what makes the tape worth diving into is the cool “liveness” of it. It has the feel of a smaller venue (relatively speaking). It is easy to see why this was picked up by the Japanese bootleg machine, it is probably one that collectors want due to it being from the ’78 tour and reasonably good quality, and great performance. Audience 8.4 - An incredibly loud tape, bordering on catastrophe but not quite going over the red line of doom. What I mean is, the tape is just way overloaded, but it hangs together miraculously just enough to be able go ahead and listen through…although at times it’s so intense you just have to turn the volume down a bit. Now, when you get to, say, The Rain Song – yeah, the tape shines…it’s just that kind of tape. NOTE: After the tape flip in Rain Song, the taper seems to have been able to dial down the recording level a little bit, it seems to get a little more manageable.
