Soundboard 8.7 - A show that factors in to what would become a stellar career over many decades. Pretty much on her own now (no longer paired with Gram Parsons R.I.P.) she started playing in the clubs in the DC area when a producer came to record this show for future reference as he crafted her breakout solo album. Did she know he was at the gig? Who knows, but she obviously made an impact. Morrison & Jeff Wisor on tracks 7-11 (disc 2) {After Gram Parsons's death} Emmy moved back to D.C., where Tom Guidera had also become a country music convert. With pedal steel player Danny Pendleton and two other musicians, they put together the Angel Band and started gigging around the clubs, playing some of the songs she’d performed with Gram. Eddie Tickner made Harris his number one priority and he convinced Mary Martin, an A&R representative from Warner/Reprise Records (the label that had released Parsons’ solo work) to investigate an Angel Band show in a Washington nightclub. Emmylou Harris became a Reprise Records recording artist in 1974; with her daughter Hallie in tow, the Angel Band relocated to Los Angeles to begin work on Harris’s first true solo album. To produce, Martin paired Harris up with Nova Scotia native Brian Ahern, the mastermind behind Anne Murray’s spate of hits in the early 70’s. She brought the quiet Canadian to hear the Angel Band, and he recorded the performance on a hand-held cassette machine to study at home. This sounds better than a hand-held cassette machine recording, purportedly a sound board, but it's not by any means what we think of as soundboard quality by today's standards. -
Audience 8.7 - This show features the return to the Spectrum, a venue they had recently played and for some reason decided that they needed to schedule another show there (perhaps they felt the last show there was below par?). Anyway, by all accounts it’s a better gig, and the audio quality is also better with clearer sound and better separation of instruments. The recording levels are a touch low, so you will have to turn up the volume (trust me it won’t distort or break up, it will get even better). Sounds like someone handed Joe Perry the wrong guitar heading onto stage because he is way out of tune! He tries to tune on the fly, but sounds like he is given another guitar and things improve. A weird start to a show! The band cranks through its classics at this point, an entertaining show to these ears. Good quality for a 1977 gig, straight from the taper. Enjoy! -
Audience 8.7 - A very well recorded show by all accounts. The sound is round, and has nice timbre. I hear everything clearly, bass sounds warm, guitars are raw and jangly…basically this sounds like the Stones in a club and it’s anything but a club! Audience 8.7 - A very good tape, with brightness and decent clarity, although maybe slightly crunchy at the very top of the high end (cymbals) but not too much. It does lack just a bit of mid band warmth and punch, but once you get about 10 minutes in, you will adjust and realize it’s pretty good, especially for those with EQ’s in their system because then you can round it off a little. Audience 9.0 - A sweet, warm, and spacious (mostly) recording that came out of nowhere. First of all, it’s already a rarity to find a tape of Rush from the UK, second, it’s a great vintage. The show? Audience 8.4 - A lo-fi but pretty decent and clear recording. I would not expect there to be many high-end live tapes floating around due to the fact that most people probably did not know who this guy was. Collectors will appreciate having this, a very uncommon thing and worthy of investigation. Audience 8.6 - I don’t quite know what to make of this tape – it is very clear but with some kind of slight crispness in the middle to high band that suggests the microphone being used was not up to the task. That being said, it’s still a pretty good recording, and with a class mic it would have been a 9.0 or better. Well worth getting, that is my final assessment. Audience 7.8 - Recorded on what sounds like a realistic cassette deck, it’s limited in dynamic range and clarity. It is not, however, a pile of muck and murk, you can hear pretty much every instrument, and guitar cuts through during solos but rhythm-wise it’s behind the sound a bit. Vocals are clear, I get drums pretty well, so it’s not a waste of time and it’s a great tour with 25 or 6 to 4 being their latest blockbuster smash hit. I would get this if you appreciated the band during their initial rise to stardom, as the joy in their playing does come through on this tape. Soundboard 9.8 - There would be no reason why a professionally recorded Kraftwerk show should sound anything less than near perfect because let’s face it, unless you are a complete moron, it would be hard to screw up their mix. It’s pretty basic, and because of that what you have here is pretty darn good. Mitternacht Notes on the show: Yet another AMAZING find that's now just come to light. This is a master tape from the France Inter archive of the FULL l'Olympia show! We only had 21 mins from the 'Somewhere in Europe' LP and then 38 mins from a rebroadcast in 2015. This is the complete show from a radio programme called "We're Going Out Tonight" with no radio DJ talking over the music or tuning. Very likely recorded before being broadcast on the radio. Of special note is Florian's use of the Votrax VS-6 "Talking Typewriter" as Karl put it in his memoir for "Die Sonne, Der Mond, Die Sterne."
