• Minden 1973 Audience 8.8 - One of the earliest concert recordings ever sourced! It sounds very good, decent equipment used, and maybe placed a little back in the club but otherwise it’s a lot better than it has a right to be. The band certainly evolved quite a bit from these early club days, but the character of the band never did. Fascinating document! Minden 1974 Audience 9.4 - What a difference a year makes, as the band return to the same club a year later and wreck the place!  Extremely tasty, the recording does the band justice as it literally just leaps out of the speakers with maximum ferocity while retaining enough detail and depth to let you sit and listen in total awe. Fucking hell this is good! • Audience 8.8 - Very exciting club shows recorded in a way that makes you wonder if the band themselves did not have it done. It is very clear, the only knock I give it is maybe the passage of time took away some of the brilliance, and/or it’s not a first gen tape…but it’s really good! • Audience 8.7 - Even though this recording does not feature a full and rounded spectrum of lows to high, it is very clear and resides mostly in the middle range EQ-wise. So, it’s most welcome to lovers of VDGG because there’s just not a whole lot of high quality recordings out there. This one is one of those that grows on you and sounds better and better the more you listen…get it! • Audience 8.9 - By ’73 audiences had realized King Crimson was not a typical “rock” band and this recording captures the experience of a group of people seeing and hearing something entirely unlike your basic rock concert. The taper was well positioned and used very good gear, and this source sounds very much like either 1st gen or master it is quiet (although just the faintest bit of tape noise) and has captured the ambience and mood of the gig which is nice. Both shows are represented, what a fine document this is! • Audience 9.0 - Solid job by taper to record from a good spot where the sound mix is great, and using good gear he gave us a document that you will be enjoying and playing more than once. • Audience 8.8 - This recording is nice and clear, and on the “bright” side of the audio spectrum which is actually very good for those who wish to season the sound  with EQ. You can add some low end here and it would make a world of difference because the sound is already good, so anything that can help it is only going to make it even better rather than overdone. Sometimes loud rock concerts in large venues have a low end rumble that makes adding anything to it a risky proposition – this one screams “please add some low end to me”!  A great one to personalize, the palate is free to embellish upon. • Soundboard 8.8 - The audio is excellent soundboard but the mix leaves out most bottom end, although the bassist is there I can hear him sometimes! Is the recording trebly and thin? Nope. It’s a good recording, with everything you really came to hear which is guitar…and of that there is plenty. Ducking, diving, turning around on a dime, vibrating, electric and fun. I can highly recommend this even if the bass is…where’s the bass?  More Bass Please ha ha!  Still excellent, still worthwhile. • Audience 9.0 - Recorded in the middle of a whole lot of fun but retains a nice focus on the music throughout. When you listen, you begin to fully kind of appreciate the aspects of an audience tape that soundboards simply don’t provide – there’s an immersive quality to it, as long as the audio fidelity is good you can relive the concert through the taper and his position in the audience. • Audience 9.1 - A very very nice taping effort, captured here with very decent gear so the quality speaks for itself. Position of taper is good, so a nice mix of the sound from the PA, all in all it’s a good one and highly recommended. • Audience 9.7 - There’s no way this isn’t a professional recording, it’s too good and it doesn’t come across as a board tape but it could be, if they used some ambient mics and mixed that in but either way this is simply spectacular. • Soundboard/Audience matrix 9.5 - Here you have a recording that does both of the things you want in a live concert experience – clarity and punch via soundboard and ambience, immersion, electricity of the audience. The audience recording being blended in really adds to this experience, even when you hear excitable fans clapping nearby…it’s quite exhilarating really and this recording will eventually be hailed and revered by fans because…well, unfortunately because of the passing of Taylor Hawkins (RIP). • Audience 8.7 - A surprisingly decent tape surfaces from Italy where Genesis found initial acceptance in the early part of their career. Sound is clear for the most part, and the timbre is pleasing to the ear…if I can knock it I would say maybe it is a bit compressed in the middle, so no crispness in the highs nor definition in the low end but it’s not the kind of compression that you get from, say, a video tape. It’s quite good like I said so feel secure if you get it knowing it will be worthwhile. • Audience 8.3 - Somewhat thin and rather raucus, with an outdoor venue quality and perhaps taper somewhere right in the middle – not close up and not too far – but even so, I find the guitar almost too overwhelming and can imagine what it was for the concert-goers that day. I was transfixed by this, by the band’s tightness and such excellent guitar! • Audience 8.6 - This tape does not offer a wide dynamic range, but neither is it compressed sounding, so it’s not awful on the ears. The good thing about capturing a band like Genesis during live performances is that the PA and mix is usually good, and not a distorted metal mess, so even average gear can produce reasonably good results. • Audience 8.3 - A dusty old tape, with signs of age including a bit of tape hiss. Sounds to me like this old tape could have benefited greatly from some remastering work but as it is, it’s listenable and a very fiery performance by the band. I like that you can hear every instrument, I think this recording has promise and I hope it gets a facelift soon. • Studio and Live 8.7 – 9.9 - A beautiful collection of recordings featuring the three original members (Tommy Shannon, Uncle John Turner, Johnny Winter) during various time periods over the decades. Most notable are the inclusion of some very rare 1969 studio sessions, and reunion material taken from Willie Nelson’s Arlyn Studios back in 1992. This material is outstanding and has yet to be officially released. • Audience 8.8 - This is what we all look forward to as Rush collectors, another great, and rare, Rush show from one of their best time periods. While not quite as clear as the Boston 79, this tape gives us a great aural spectrum for our ears to delight in. • Soundboard 9.7 - I saw this band around the same time and I can tell you it’s great that there are board tapes around because even though they were spectacular live, the sound was very dense and there’s a lot going on. With this tape you can hear it all in glorious quality, it’s prime stuff, psychedelic rock taken to the next level. • Audience 8.8 - On the rarity scale this is one of those needle in a haystack recordings. It’s an obscure “group” (actually just a duo but here it sounds like they have some accompaniment), and the music straddles the fence between fold psyche and space rock (that’s a good thing).  I would say this couple was trying to stretch something as far as they could in the context of a “folk” duo. • Audience 9.2 - A lively, airy, and detailed (especially with percussion and vocals) recording. • Audience 9.5 - Astounding! Not just for the excellent sound but the dynamics are so present here, you get lush, rich lows and then all the way up through the spectrum including detailed but not sizzling highs. Combine all that with the energy of Tusk performed with a marching band at the LA Forum and man, yeah, this is the stuff! • Soundboard 9.6 - A tight, expertly mixed board tape. I think how they mic’d this up to include audience was a great idea, it adds so much to this recording. Lou feeds off their excitement. Sheffield 1973 Soundboard 8.9 - Another great board tape featuring Lou’s best band. I love the sound of the band let alone their musicianship. • Audience 8.7 - This band, while not a household name by any stretch, actually did gain quite a following throughout Europe and even to a much lesser degree in the USA. They played a style of progressive rock that was accessible but did not convert to singing in English completely and that probably won over more fans in their home country. The recording here is clear, it provides just enough dynamics and detail to let you sink yourself into their sound, although the recording suffers some level problems towards the end, but recovers enough to end on a high note. The material is great, I am reminded of Pink Floyd, Eloy, and perhaps maybe a bit of ELP. • Audience 8.8 - A good, bright recording that features rich bass, and strong vocals in particular. This allows you to hear the musicianship which believe it or not, these guys have! • Audience 8.8 - I was surprised at just how good this sounded. The first half of the first song you wonder how it will be, and you fear it might wobble because taper is adjusting things on the fly but it gets sorted and wow, I have to give props to taper on this one! He sounds maybe halfway back in the venue, so not close up, but he’s using either high end consumer gear or maybe something more professional to be able to lock in his levels and get a really good timbre. • Audience 8.8 - A very satisfying recording, with a great snare drum sound and I highlight that because it is often overlooked. Dio sounds clear and if I fault anything it’s maybe Toni’s guitar which is just slightly behind the overall sound coming from the mains but still it’s really not too bad and the solos really come across clearly. It’s a fine live sound all around and is comfortable on the ears. • Fillmore East 1969 Audience 8.4 - A bit of hiss is present, the music is not crystal clear until the guitar kicks in and then it comes alive. I’ll tell you what listening to this did for me: I started to understand why hippies tripped balls to Canned Heat, there is a very weird acid vibe going on, things get distorted and intense, and extremely psychedelic in a blues based presentation that is really kind of crazy. Maybe it was due to the band blowing up amplifiers, I don’t know but it’s intoxicating and you can’t stop listening to it, maybe it’s just this show, this weird recording that seems to do weird things…on purpose?  You decide. Atlanta Pop Festival 1969 Audience 8.8 - A very interesting sounding old tape, with lead guitar and vocals quite present as if taper was real close but no distortion (although some tape hiss). The performance is bristling with acid blues rock electricity. It’s just palpable, I get these guys I really understand what the magic was. • All Soundboard 9.3 - This entirely depends on how much you want to hear blazing, inventive lead guitar and don’t mind if the bass sounds more like a rhythm guitar, That is what the bass sounds like to my ears, it’s there, but it’s not “low end” it’s more like a heavy rhythm guitar. It works for this style of rock though – and it’s all good stuff, if maybe a tad generic with the singing. • Audience 8.7 - So let me put it this way – the recording is not perfect, but is near perfect for someone who needs to try and understand what makes Iron Maiden special. This captures a night, just another night (in fact this was a stand of shows at the Radio City Music Hall) on a long, never ending tour for the band but they play as if it was their last show. It’s amazing how night after night, town after town, tour after tour, Iron Maiden never gives a bad performance. I love this capture even though it suffers a few bumps and bruises, because it’s in the trenches from the hardcore fans perspective, it’s as if the taper is working as hard to capture the gig as the band is in delivering it. I LOVE it, and once I started playing this, I could not stop. I think you’ll love it too. • Audience 9.5 - Holy Moly this is RED HOT!  The recording is right in your face but not distorted at all. It’s amazing how close this sounds, its super clear too. The only knock I have is that the bottom end is not as beefy as I would prefer. I really wanted more low end punch but if that is the only knock, then you probably should explore this one because not only is it great audio-wise but the playing is off the charts, and I mean seriously Jeff Beck and Stanley Clarke are at the absolute peak of Mount Everest here. • Audience 9.0 - A very good recording, maybe a little “soft” but that is the house I think, bass is the predominant player, guitar is not as far up in the mix as one would prefer but it’s decent and all notes are audible. The drums are nice here, and the atmosphere is not pronounced but is present to some degree. It has the sense of just being a smaller venue, which it is, and so you sense that as you listen. What you will notice is how amazing this is, and what makes it really cool is how much Peter addresses the audience.
