Soundboard 8.8 - OK, so yeah this board tape is extremely clear but it suffers from the sterility of most board tapes, and when the band is ACDC, you really need that electric atmosphere a rowdy audience provides. I also found this tape kind of missing some “guts”, but, if you want to hear everything, all guitars and drums, vocals (including backing vocals), then you can’t miss with a clean board tape that allows everything to be present. Audience 8.3 - Limitations with the microphone is probably what prevents this recording from blossoming as it sometimes seems like it wants to do. You can hear it, for instance, during some of the passages, but I think the overloading of the bass crowds out the guitar a bit too much (although you can hear guitar, just not in a clear and detailed manner). Drums and keyboards dominate with a very insistent, pulsing bass undercurrent throughout. Does that count this out? Not at all, due to the disparity of live BJH recordings, I think this one is worth exploring. The compositions and playing make up for the limitations on the tape. Audience 8.5 - While some may say this recording is not technically that great, I beg to differ. Now, it is not super clear, but it is not muddy…it is not distant, it is not super dynamic but it still has guts and balls. I actually REALLY grooved to this, and the band is ferocious sounding. Hearing the fresh faced Vinnie Appice on drums for the first time with Sabbath and he’s really driving the beat, a different style to Bill Ward. This one is a must have for anyone that calls themselves a Sabbath fan. It’s THAT important. Soundboard 9.3 - This is, for me, a real revelation. I never knew anything of this band outside of their lone smash hit “My Sharona”, which incidentally happens to hearken me back to a very specific time and place of my youth when this song blasted from every radio every 10 minutes. Listening to this show, I am stunned at how excellent the band is, and how good ALL of the songs are. How they remained pigeonholed and forgotten as another 1 hit wonder it just amazes me because they should have been more than that. Soundboard 8.8 - A less than perfect board tape as far as the overall timbre, and the mix itself. I found this tape to resemble maybe a really good AM broadcast, but perhaps that is too harsh! It’s not bad, I just personally found it to be lacking some “punch”, although it is clear, it’s a board tape so there will be a built in appreciation for the “closeness” of the sounds. Audience 8.8 - Well here it is folks, the BEST early vintage ZZ Top recording to ever surface. We already gave up a long time ago that the band would dig into their archives for us, but now it’s been completely left up to the fans to provide the early documents…and for better or worse they have (mostly worse). After all this time a tape has surfaced that presents a powerful early testament to the rocking blues power of ZZ Top before they “made it” to the FM bigtime. The hits were already in the repertoire, but only hinting at the massive success to come. This is the REAL DEAL – a clear, loud, balsy tape from very early in the bands career. Audience 8.8 - Every now and then a tape surfaces that really gets you excited as a collector. This one is just such a tape, because for one thing not only is the quality very good, but it’s super nice on the ears. What I mean is, the timbre of the recording is very comfortable, so it’s easy to listen to the entire show there is no fatigue on the ears at all. The icing on the cake is having both opening acts in the same kind of quality, in complete form. So, what more could you ask for? Pro TV Studio 8.7 - A good live recording with atmosphere, it sounds slightly dated but has the ability to transport you to the time and place…I think that when a recording can do that, it overcomes some of the limitations that may be present. Audience 8.8 - This may not be a tape with good song separation or detail but it occupies a sonic range that is very comfortable on the ears. Usually when attending a very loud, bombastic heavy rock or metal concert you aren’t going to distinguish much anyway, you will basically hear a roaring sound…but this tape delivers a little more than just that. An absolute beast of a canister! Loaded down with 14 discs, it's quite the experience as you follow the Who on tour in the States in 1980. For the most part, all of the recordings reside in the mid to upper 8's on the 1-10 scale, with a couple coming in at over 9.0 (Essen, for instance). I found it to be very satisfying as all of the songs I enjoy hearing them play are represented, without the overindulgence into Tommy...finally! Audience 9.2 - What immediately strikes you about this recording is that Rick Wright’s synth sounds and effects are NOT window dressing! In fact, they are almost overwhelmingly loud at times during the concert. Now, what I like most about old recordings is when they reveal something to me I never knew – in this case I did not know or appreciate how much Rick’s work, however consequential during the song, was not mixed out or down by any stretch but you might think that judging on the myriad hundreds of tapes that exist that do not give you a true appreciation of the volume. This tape is insistent, relentless, and thankfully clear and dynamic. The middle and upper midrange is sometimes almost too much but never does it distort. Soundboard 9.3 - A decent but kind of middle rangey sound, but in this case I like it because it gives the Kinks a more punkish sound. This material is also kind of punkish so the delivery and the sound of the recording itself convinces you that this band wanted to impart the punk attitude. Some of the songs are definitely not punkish but we know it’s not all encompassing, just generally I think The Kinks liked the punk ethos. Audience 8.2 - Well, it isn’t a recording that will win any grammies but damn if it isn’t RAW just like the band and their music. This recording actually suits this band – it’s a little rough, but it’s brutal and in your face. The vocals fight for bandwidth against angry and loud guitars, driving bass, and furious non-stop drums. It’s actually kind of a fun listen despite its limitations. Oh, and some good news – it is not a muddy mess at all, it’s just a loud band in a small club sounding for all the world like the debut of punk rock. It sounds very good, decent equipment used, and maybe placed a little back in the club but otherwise it’s a lot better than it has a right to be. The band certainly evolved quite a bit from these early club days, but the character of the band never did. Fascinating document! Chicago 1979 Soundboard 8.8 - A little bit on the “ragged” side mix-wise, with strong kick drums and guitar, vocals next. Sound quality is decent due to it being a soundboard but some instruments are placed well behind such as keyboards. It is a high energy sound, a real sonic blast to be sure. Denver 1979 Soundboard 9.3 - A refreshing and bright board tape, mixed well and everything is heard pretty clearly. Keyboards still mixed lower down the chain of command but now I think I understand this idea – while the band is playing it’s simply keyboard accompaniment, and when it’s keyboards time, he’s brought up louder. Works for me. Long Island 1979 Audience 8.7 - A pretty decent tape for this hall, the bass sounds very nice, full and round, guitars are a little back, vocals are present and up front more or less. So, all in all unless you have to have Ritchie blasting full on into your eardrums, which he is during his solo bits, this one will sit nicely in the collection and I even think it will find a repeated listen or two. It is very clear, the only knock I give it is maybe the passage of time took away some of the brilliance, and/or it’s not a first gen tape…but it’s really good! Audience 8.7 - Even though this recording does not feature a full and rounded spectrum of lows to high, it is very clear and resides mostly in the middle range EQ-wise. So, it’s most welcome to lovers of VDGG because there’s just not a whole lot of high quality recordings out there. This one is one of those that grows on you and sounds better and better the more you listen…get it! Audience 8.9 - By ’73 audiences had realized King Crimson was not a typical “rock” band and this recording captures the experience of a group of people seeing and hearing something entirely unlike your basic rock concert. The taper was well positioned and used very good gear, and this source sounds very much like either 1st gen or master it is quiet (although just the faintest bit of tape noise) and has captured the ambience and mood of the gig which is nice. Both shows are represented, what a fine document this is! Soundboard 8.9 - There is no problem with the audio fidelity of this title, it sounds great – but that is not to say there is not a problem with it. So, it’s basically like this: If you want to hear what Radiohead themselves consider their biggest ever gig, than you will have to deal with what sounds like a quadraphonic recording in stereo…which basically means you get an in/out phasing effect almost throughout the entire show. Is that a deal-breaker? It might be, then again it’s not a muddy audience tape it is a very good board so the negative effects are not nearly as horrible as they could be. Soundboard 9.7 - This is the one to get if you want to hear this band at arguably the peak of their powers. Sounding like a flashier, somewhat more progressive version of Iron Maiden to these ears, but whoa nelly there is a whole lot of premium quality musicianship happening and it is happening in fantastic quality. Most recording of busy, progressive metal groups simply have a hard time mixing the different instruments in such a way as to deliver the punch without over-killing it and destroying the integrity of the sound. This recording is brilliant because it doesn’t do that, and I honestly have never heard live early Queensyche in this manner before and it is a thrill, it’s a MUST have if you have even a passing interest. Audience 8.8 - This recording is nice and clear, and on the “bright” side of the audio spectrum which is actually very good for those who wish to season the sound with EQ. You can add some low end here and it would make a world of difference because the sound is already good, so anything that can help it is only going to make it even better rather than overdone. Sometimes loud rock concerts in large venues have a low end rumble that makes adding anything to it a risky proposition – this one screams “please add some low end to me”! A great one to personalize, the palate is free to embellish upon.
