  • Soundboard 9.8 - This is a close to perfect KBFH broadcast and I say that because I love the sound mix here. For me, it was important to hear the bass so nice, round, present, defined, and pumping! Of course that is not to denigrate anything else but for me I just loved the way that shone through. The band is really at the highest of heights for a band, I remember growing up in the mid 70’s and this music permeated everything. • Audience 8.8 - A snapshot from the road during a period that for some reason is largely undocumented. The tape is consistent and good, most listeners will settle into it nicely, but those who prefer the pristine boards or Mike “The Mic” Millard quality tapes may be critical of this one. Personally I found this tape to deliver on the essentials, being that it is clear (a little bit overcrowded in the center channel a bit and maybe not the best instrument separation) and reasonably dynamic enough to hold your attention through the duration.

  • Audience  9.0 - Immerse yourself into a great show, great set list, great sound!
  • Audience  7.5 - There is some tape hiss present, and a little bit flat maybe but a great early period show that does not have the typical sound flaws (no boominess, not too distant, not distorted). It’s great for the vintage, all instruments heard, and a good jam.
  • Audience 9.1 - Great stuff here! A wide, ambient, but solid capture. This recording has some kind of magical ability to place you in a seat close to the stage and hear what probably was the actual PA sound, not colored by tape machine or microphone limitations. • Audience 8.9 - Thankfully we have this amazing document because it’s quite fascinating. The sound is clear and bright, and has LOADS of ambience and immersive quality although I would not say it is “deep” or very rich sounding. It’s certainly kind of a typical guerilla recording but that someone went through the trouble and actually got the whole show in admirable fashion to me is the amazing part. The audience response to Donovan is the other amazing part and lends a lot to the excitement of the show. Really, really interesting one! • Audience/Soundboard 8.6-9.0 - The majority of the set is very good, audience quality tapes that have a decent enough sound where you can take it easy and not strain yourself trying to hear George rip his leads. I would say the lone exception though might be the Amsterdam tape which is less clear, but even here it's not a trainwreck at all. The board tape from France is good to have, obviously Dokken is clearly the top of the heap when it comes to the 80's "hair" metal bands although I hate to classify them there because they were class musicians first.

  • Audience 8.2 - This rare old tape shows signs of age, with the typical problems such as tape hiss and some dropouts occasionally but it is saved because there is music underneath it, I mean, you do hear the band reasonably well and it happens that, for whatever reason, there is no abundance of ’79 shows by this band. Plenty of 80’s, and some pre-’79 too but not a lot of 1979 gigs. Also, of note this gig was the one right before their appearance on Rockpalast.

  • Audience 8.4 - The Roundhouse in London was not the ideal place to make a stealth recording, and this one barely wins the struggle between room and distance to present a surprising, clear picture of a very early Dire Straits show. Songs “Me And My Friends” and “Real Girl” would be dropped from the set soon after this show, so having a tape like this should be considered important to the collector. • Audience 9.4 - Outstanding tape that has a full, rich bottom end that comes close to overshadowing the rest of the band but does not…but the fact that it is so insistent in the mix gives you that feeling like you are standing close to the mains and literally feel the bass and drums going right through you. That is what gives this recording an amazing live feel, because it literally places you right there and when you crank this you relive this event.  This date is NOT the same show as the other Cologne '79 (Rockpalast) listed here. • Soundboard  9.2 - Don't assume that there is any particular period of Dio's career that is "better" or somehow more desirable. Dio was a total pro, and he always put together exceptional bands. Vivian Campbell just shreds on this. The performance, the quality, Dio up to his usual high standards of excellence - this is a must have!
  • Audience  8.9 - A solid but very loud recording with the tiniest bit of overloaded signal that seems to make this recording jump out of the speakers with supreme force. Pretty intense stuff, highly recommended!
  • Audience 9.3 - An excellent capture of a great performance by the entire band. With a recording like this where taper is using high quality equipment, the end result is only as good as the PA sound since that is what your mics capture. In the case of Dio, I am sure they have a multi-million dollar PA system and expert sound engineers at the desk. The live sound is well mixed and powerful. • Audience  8.8 - A tape with a ton of atmosphere and electricity. The audio does not have a super well balanced mix but rather a strong focus on Dio’s vocals (fine by me) and really solid drums followed by a good mid range punch of guitar and bass. This is enjoyable stuff here!
  • Soundboard 9.1 - I am kind of doubting whether it is truly a board tape because it doesn’t have that sort of dry and immediate sound, it’s got too much atmosphere. That being said, it is definitely pro, and could be open mics placed strategically around the stage. Sounds great!
  • CD 1: Oakland, CA - Audience  9.2 - Sounds like a pro recording. CD  2-4: Cotati, CA - Audience  9.4 - The band must have had this recorded themselves, it’s too good! Highly skilled musicians jamming the night away.
  • FM Broadcast 9.8 - Just about as good as it can get, this captures the moment and freezes it forever in such granular detail that it feels like you are sitting right next to Dickie’s amp. It makes you appreciate his playing like never before. I mean, I play the guitar, but I have no concept of how you turn it into an extension of yourself to the degree that it is practically impossible to make even the slightest mistake. Not that his playing is perfection, it almost is, but just that he uses the instrument to convey so much feeling that it is impossible even to tell if he ever misses a note or phrases something wrong. Does that make sense? NOTE: The artwork shows disc two with only the last two tracks but the set has been tracked to include "Jessica" and "The Way Love Goes" on disc 2...so the artwork will not be changed to reflect the song order it just is what it is.
