Audience 8.7/8.9 - Both recordings are really well done with the clear edge going to the 1975 stuff because it is a little bit more clear, although the synths and moogs and other keys are pushed way out front in the mix which is great because those sounds are otherworldly and mega heavy! A spot of mic dropout can be heard and it could easily have been edited out but it’s kept on the there but thankfully lasts only 2 seconds…otherwise what a show this is! Fantastic and mind blowing! Audience 8.6 - Both recordings seem to sound quite similar and garner the middle 8 rating but don’t let that dissuade you – these are not bad at all. Considering the scarcity of live Omega recordings I would say these deserve some time in the player, and the ears will adjust and you’ll find them of redeeming value. The material is progressive and at times ventures into more risky territory for a prog band but the band can be forgiven for that as overall I appreciate the adventure. Soundboard 9.4 - A terrific “live” sound and feel, it’s hard to tell even if it is a board tape because it just has too much “room” and atmosphere. It’s quite astonishing really, it’s a fantastic sound and mix, and feel, and of course there’s the band and their amazing material. What I can say is that you will love this and play it again…it is one of the best. FM Broadcast 9.1 - A board tape that seems to have a more ambient quality to it, meaning it sounds like close mic’ing rather than direct into board. That means you do not hear the audience as is typical of a board tape, but you do get a “room” sound like the quality of an audience tape, albeit a very good one. This is a real good tape but it does sound somewhat dated and thankfully the remastered version (this one) brings more clarity and punch than before. Soundboard 9.0 - Nothing inherently wrong with this board tape, it’s very much what you should expect, but there is some atmosphere that captures some of the room excitement. You won’t strain to hear anything on this recording as everything is right up front. Bass is very well rounded and tight, drums are in the pocket and guitar is blasting as only Rory can. So, it is highly suggested you grab this, ‘cause you’ll dig it. I only notice maybe vocals being a little bit underneath the music which is not a bother when you consider that most of this is instrumental anyway…however that is a minor quibble, this is a great recording for 1970. Audience 8.8 - A tape that does NOT suffer at all from narrowness as it is truly wide open and atmospheric… but at the expense of separation of instruments. Does that mean it is bad or not worth hearing? Hell no – this is a VERY GOOD tape recording, I think for myself I always want to hear distinct bass notes because I am such a big fan of Chris Squire, and here he is mainly the “bottom” for the sound, and occasionally you get to hear his notes ring out and float above the sound but not always. I am spoiled though, because not all tapes are going to be Cleveland ’78! However, since this is a 1980 show, I think it is one to get as I find this period of the band extremely interesting to listen to especially live. Good stuff! Audience 9.6 - This sound is so real, so present, and SO LOUD but thankfully hangs together without shredding the tape it is stored on…mostly. On occasion there’s some minor breaking up in a certain frequency due to the sheer volume and proximity to the microphone but to be honest that is kind of what makes this recording such a revelation for me. FM Broadcast 9.6 - This recording is beautiful, but not without a fair share of hiccups, and I don’t mean in the recording itself, but in the happenings on stage. This was a large and complex production (featuring an orchestra) and there were bound to be some technical problems. Now, if you can appreciate that, and you understand shit happens, then I highly encourage you to dive into this one because when it is good, it is extremely powerful and intoxicating. I will say that even though sometimes the equipment fails (bad mic cable, etc.), it just reinforces the appreciation for the efforts that go into a live stage production and broadcast. Audience 8.9 - The great thing about this band is that most times a relatively normal tape machine can capture them cleanly and a really good machine captures them gloriously. Audience 8.8 - This is an interesting recording because while the guitar is very close and defined, the rest of the band is kind of floating above you. It’s as if the taper’s mic was placed in front of Jeff’s guitar cab and at the same time he was able to capture the rest of the sound through the main P.A. so it’s kind of strange. Audience 8.7 - Here is the big question: Was this broadcast over the air? If it was, I’d find it odd that they recorded the show from the audience, I mean, in bootleg fashion as it sounds like a bona fide audience bootleg tape! It’s decent enough though, taken from what seems like the back of the room so it gets the full PA sound projecting out, including audience reaction, so it is somewhat immersive. You definitely get a sense of the room that’s for sure. I think this recording is a raucous good time if nothing else and shows the band very comfortable with the music and their place in rock and roll. Soundboard 9.8 - What makes this recording rate so highly is the professionalism all around – that means the band first for putting in the sparkling performance (and that’s even more succinct here with the unusual line-up and changing sound of Tull), and then the sound engineer for so deftly mixing and preserving this recording. I mean, it’s not just a board tape where you pop in the cassette and capture whatever sound you’ve dialed in for the evening, this is a well manicured mix that seemingly must have been made with a view towards a release because it is just too good, too perfectly balanced to be just a house mix. I'd almost call it an audience recording because it’s kind of got that same sort of feel except for the vocals and the bass as they have this quality to it that reminds me more of FM broadcasts. It sounds to me that the band, from 1973 and again a few years later in 1975/78 REALLY progressed, it’s almost like night and day. Audience 8.6 - This old tape has been extensively reworked to present a fan favorite in as good of quality as ever. It’s not a great tape recording but it’s actually kind of a charmer, this is due in part because this old theater was a favorite venue for many of the classic UK prog and Canterbury groups of the time. It’s a very appealing concert, you can kind of sense the band relishes it. Audience 9.3 - A great, clean, and atmospheric recording that you cannot help but love. It’s one of those shows that you can’t get away from, the band is so on fire…even Prince has to comment about how tight his band is! They are superb and the level of funkiness is off the charts. Audience 8.7 - This tape has one thing really going for it, and that is it is surprisingly clear, maybe not super close to the stage but that means there’s no distortion…there’s also no boominess, and there’s some good live atmosphere. The mix is decent, and overall this tape can be really enjoyed by anyone but let me tell you why I love it – because they play my fave Thin Lizzy song “Opium Trail” so there ya go. Pro Recording 9.3 - The reason this is not listed as a soundboard (and it very well may be) is because they way it was recorded sounds like they may have hung microphones rather than direct through board. In this case I find the recording to be more preferable to the “dry” board mix, here you get some atmosphere and it helps immensely! Audience 8.9 - Thankfully we have this amazing document because it’s quite fascinating. The sound is clear and bright, and has LOADS of ambience and immersive quality although I would not say it is “deep” or very rich sounding. It’s certainly kind of a typical guerilla recording but that someone went through the trouble and actually got the whole show in admirable fashion to me is the amazing part. The audience response to Donovan is the other amazing part and lends a lot to the excitement of the show. Really, really interesting one! Audience 9.2 - Even with the well known acoustics of Carnegie Hall being not ideal for taping (but very good for “live” concert hall sound), this taper did an admiral job. The sound is crisp, vibrant, and has great atmospherics. Obviously without that over-amped rock star PA insanity you get with most concert hall audience tapes of that time, this is more acoustic, generally speaking and therefore the sound does not get crowded or distorted. Audience 9.2 - A very interesting tour that featured just two individuals on stage working in coordination to bring audiences a new perspective on Elton’s music…and it works marvelously. Audio quality here is great, and that is a huge benefit to the listener as they get to enjoy the subtleties of what is happening on stage, including the witty banter between songs. Audience 8.8 - Excellent recording for the time period when it seemed most audience tapes sounded very flat and tinny. This one is pretty dynamic but for one fault (not tapers fault). The PA system, while good, did not give vocals enough clarity. During quieter passages, yes, but in louder parts (most of the gig) it’s sort of indistinct, but audible and not buried (just not real distinct). I mean, he’s totally audible is what I am getting at, but for some reason I can’t make out anything he’s singing about (is this par for the course with Marillion?). BTW the Genesis comparisons are accurate! Soundboard 8.8 - It’s kind of hard to rate this any higher due to the extreme hotness in the recording levels but it rates as high as it does because it’s unique among board tapes in that Mick Jagger sounds so live and in your face it’s like he’s singing next to you…scary I know. Now, just because this is a “hot” tape doesn’t mean you can’t hear anything, it’s all there but it’s all pretty forcefully delivered. I can’t say in this case it’s entirely a bad thing…’cause it does make for a rather “intimate” encounter with the Stones, especially you know who. Audience 9.5 - Brilliant! After sound adjustments the PA system just cranks out the best, clearest sound you could hope for. Almost everything is clear and balanced in the mix, I mean it ain’t perfect (for instance we don’t get the best balance between Keith and Ron) but it’s darn good. The sound mix has nothing to do with how well the audio capture is but it factors slightly in the rating. Audience 9.1 - A great sounding capture that is just a little further back than the previous night…still it’s really good because the dynamic range is wide and warm. The sound mix itself is not heavy on the guitars here, it’s really Mick and drums followed by the low rumble of the bass. Guitars are here just not the spotlight instrument which in my opinion I prefer them front and center. Alas, I found myself able to appreciate the contributions of everyone else for once. Audience 8.8 - This tape is fascinating! Really gives the listener exactly what they might have experienced attending this concert, a sort of audio time capsule in very good quality but more than that it is LOADED with electric atmosphere. You get a very good sense of time and space. Fantastic! There is one caveat…a microphone drop out does occur towards the end of the show that kind of spoils the flow but it was not something that seemed like taper error so all is forgiven. Audience 9.7 - Brilliant recording and an example of what you can do if you have excellent gear, perfect acoustics, and good placement.
