• Audience 9.0 - A great recording that certainly gives you a good idea of what the ambience of the LA Forum was during that time period for an opening act!  So, to be clear, it’s a somewhat sedate audience that allows you to hear pretty much every nuance.   • Shotgun were a 1970s rock band from Dallas. The band consisted of Guy Houston on drums, Hugh Coleman on bass, John Michael Soria on lead guitar, Russ Skarsten on keyboards, and Billy Metcalf on lead vocals.  The band's 1976 album, recorded but never released, Dallasian Rock was remastered and reissued by ShroomAngel Records, in 2014. Reviewing the album for seaoftranquility.org, Pete Pardo awarded the album five stars and said: "This is incredible material that should have been huge back in the day, and the amazing thing is it still sounds fresh and exciting here in 2014. The ShroomAngel team have done a wonderful job on the remastering, so be prepared for a killer listening experience."
  • CD issue of recordings originally released in 1978 and 1981.  Import from Mexico, CD is new and never played housed in a slipcase.
  • Audience 8.7 - Actually not bad but it’s very close to the main PA and thus loud and noisy. There’s an annoying frequency somewhere between the mid and high that needs to be compressed. At first I thought this was a soundboard, it might be mistaken for one. It’s so close to the speakers, I mean this recording puts you in the front row. I do like it despite my concerns.
  • Audience 7.2–8.2 - What you get here is a very raucous sounding tape because when the band is at full volume the recorder can’t deal with it so there’s some clutter and slight high end break up, but when the band is more low key, such as a straight blues number, it’s wonderful. The music? Off the hook jamming!
  • Soundboard 9.7 - Both as good as it gets. Pro all the way.…a must have!
  • Audience 7.9 - Not the best sound mix here, and it kind of blasts through your speakers, but it’s rollicking good fun mate!
  • Soundboard 8.7 - What we have here with these two shows are a couple of primitive soundboards, and by that I mean they may have run the sound through the board but what ended up on the tape is NOT what you would expect. It's not a manicured, expert mix and pristine sound, it's a very raw, brutal, loud, obnoxious, hellish, and violent turbulence of sound that somehow fits the vibe to a tee. This is Slayer, in 1985, and it sounds like it. Wonderful in its rawness, brutal in its aggressive sonic assault, and 100% vintage Slayer.

  • Audience 8.3 - A serviceable tape that presents a very round bottom end but has a good solid middle during less frenetic jams, and in turn this also reveals great snappy highs. What I think it is, it’s a loud kick drum that intrudes during active sections, not too badly, but it does push itself too far into the mix. Still GREAT stuff and highly recommended.
  • Four Discs of music that will melt your brain. All are either Very Good or Excellent quality, so it’s not a jarring experience to sit through all four discs, they have a certain continuity to them. I think this is a great time period of music and these guys were just on another level.  It’s a fun thing to ponder, whether there are any bands that can do this sort of thing today – and the answer is “I really don’t think so”.   • Soundboard 9.8 - Professionally recorded for release, the quality is as defined as you could hope for. Probably had to be somewhat challenging to mix, a band with three back-up singers and a lead singer, violinist, guitar/bass/drums, and keyboards. A lot to manage but an impeccable job for this show.

  • Radio Broadcast 8.8 - Some age showing on the tape (hiss) but highly enjoyable.
  • Audience 9.0 - This recording has a good solid middle highlighting the musicianship of the band, possibly at the expense of Chris in the overall mix. Don’t let that stop you, by all means this is one to get.
  • Audience 9.2 - Here we have a real treat for those who now realize what we had in our youths with the "Seattle Sound" as epitomized by Soundgarden, a sound that fit the times very appropriately. Now for the kicker: This show not only sounds great but has plenty of fun moments with Chris Cornell and the audience (I think he's a bit toasty on the potent German suds). What I liked most is the live sound here is mixed well for the guitars especially, only Chris gets a bit drowned out during the extreme volume heavier parts but overall it's hitting the sweet spot, at least for me.

  • Audience 8.5 - Taken from the master source, this high energy show reveals a band on the rise. Captured from the balcony, the sound is pretty much what came from the house P.A. system and is, as could be expected, insanely loud and therefore not clear and distinct but certainly forceful and once the ears adjust, is pretty realistic. Coming from a master source, it is free of tape noise and other artifacts.
  • Audience 8.5 - Taken from the master source, this high energy show reveals a band on the rise. Captured from the balcony, the sound is pretty much what came from the house P.A. system and is, as could be expected, insanely loud and therefore not clear and distinct but certainly forceful and once the ears adjust, is pretty realistic. Coming from a master source, it is free of tape noise and other artifacts. DVD - Shot on Hi8MM, the picture looks great! The angle is from the balcony, which was not that high or far from the stage so even though you are looking slightly down on top of the band, you see the entire stage and most of the audience on the floor without any interference. Camera occasionally zooms in, pans slightly, and at brief intervals goes slightly too high missing the front of the stage but I suppose that may have been due to the filmer trying to adjust.
  • Audience 8.6 - The recording here leans toward the bright and trebly side but that lends an excellent opportunity to hear specifically what the guitar is doing, and the bass now has articulation so it’s not just a loud, dull rumble like most recordings tend to be with these blasting grunge bands. Chris sounds brilliant, and he’s maybe the clearest instrument on the stage too. Once you get used to the general timbre of the sound, it’s a fun, wild ride.
  • Audience 8.9 - Both of these nights feature decent sound quality that also allows you to hear all of the instruments in a reasonably clear mix. This is hard to come by!   • Audience 8.7 - Lacks maybe some good mid punch, lows are good, Chris sounds good, but honestly listening now it kind of haunts you. RIP Chris Cornell.
  • Audience 8.6 - Sourced from a 1st gen analog tape, this sounds surprisingly good for a pre-fame grunge band with questionable live mix sound. They really never had a good live sound until they got famous, but this qualifies as one of the “must have’s” of their early career
  • Audience 8.8 - This is a good capture that definitely helps you decipher what both guitars are doing, and that’s most welcome. Bass is sort of undefined but is holding down a good enough bottom end to help move this sound through your speakers.   • Audience 7.9 - Good for the time period. Sounds like taper had decent gear. A tad distant sounding but the frequencies are actually strong. This is not that bad.
  • Audience 9.4 - This is just one of those very lucky evenings where all the elements came together for a great result – good taper location, excellent house sound, excellent music performed. Each instrument is articulate and exists within its own frequency so there’s no overcrowding, it’s a joy to listen to!
  • Audience 8.6 - A resurrected gem of a show, not killer sound as one might expect but it’s definitely not garbage. I started playing it and could not stop. It’s just one of those things that if you understand you are listening to something that should not exist in the first place, that sounds reasonably good given the time and circumstances, and delivers in every way for performance and historical accuracy (live performance being about the most realistic snapshot of a particular performer at that time) well then you will appreciate what this is.   • Audience 8.6 - Surprisingly decent, it’s got some “rattle and bones” but overall it is highly listenable with a good timbre to it. Anything from this period is welcome, and this old tape has not only survived the decades intact but delivers on the enjoyment meter considerably. The bonus tracks vary but are generally pretty good quality with the tell-tale sound of vinyl ever present throughout. No attempt was made to clean it up, this is due to the sensitive nature of the high end on these recordings, it would seem any real noise reduction or cleaning would compromise that.   • Audience 8.6 - Clean, and solid dynamics make for a great listen.
  • Audience 7.7 - Bright, clear, some tape over-saturation is present but not from any low end, or even high end which is clear and intact, it’s from maybe a touch of overload due to volume and average microphone. A good tape though, even with the limitations.
  • Audience 9.0 - Before I first heard this I assumed it would be a tough listen based on other recordings from this venue. Well, I am very happy to report that my assumption was dead wrong! This is just a great, great recording for the time period. It does seem to be about midway back  but this is not a liability in this situation because it seems to give an aura, a sense of time and place, with the ambience and natural echo (just a touch).   • Soundboard 9.6 - A professionally recorded and mixed affair that was actually broadcast on the radio and it’s obvious as nobody would take the time and care to produce such a convincing live tape unless they had a good reason. The performance is marvelous, and the recording shimmers. A must have for Spirit fans!
  • Audience 7.9 - A delightful tape, rather warm and intimate although not super bright and clear. It still works, it has that vibe and emotional thing happening.
  • Audience 9.0 - Very present and clear guitar! The whole band sounds great – this is a great tape!
  • Various sources, all generally very good to excellent. Well worth picking this up.
  • Audience 8.4 Audience 9.6 Audience 8.6 - I found the ’68 show to be surprisingly strong for the early vintage, a definite surprise even with some hiss present which could theoretically be mitigated with a re-master but you don’t want to sacrifice any highs as they are just hanging on at the upper end. The ’69 is the famous Texas Pop Festival and of course is the best sounding one, and finally the ’70 show which really surprised me, a tad distant from the stage but clear, and I rather enjoyed the live atmosphere.
