Audience 8.6 - A resurrected gem of a show, not killer sound as one might expect but it’s definitely not garbage. I started playing it and could not stop. It’s just one of those things that if you understand you are listening to something that should not exist in the first place, that sounds reasonably good given the time and circumstances, and delivers in every way for performance and historical accuracy (live performance being about the most realistic snapshot of a particular performer at that time) well then you will appreciate what this is. Audience 8.6 - Surprisingly decent, it’s got some “rattle and bones” but overall it is highly listenable with a good timbre to it. Anything from this period is welcome, and this old tape has not only survived the decades intact but delivers on the enjoyment meter considerably. The bonus tracks vary but are generally pretty good quality with the tell-tale sound of vinyl ever present throughout. No attempt was made to clean it up, this is due to the sensitive nature of the high end on these recordings, it would seem any real noise reduction or cleaning would compromise that. Audience 8.6 - Clean, and solid dynamics make for a great listen. -
Audience 7.7 - Bright, clear, some tape over-saturation is present but not from any low end, or even high end which is clear and intact, it’s from maybe a touch of overload due to volume and average microphone. A good tape though, even with the limitations. -
Audience 9.0 - Before I first heard this I assumed it would be a tough listen based on other recordings from this venue. Well, I am very happy to report that my assumption was dead wrong! This is just a great, great recording for the time period. It does seem to be about midway back but this is not a liability in this situation because it seems to give an aura, a sense of time and place, with the ambience and natural echo (just a touch). Soundboard 9.6 - A professionally recorded and mixed affair that was actually broadcast on the radio and it’s obvious as nobody would take the time and care to produce such a convincing live tape unless they had a good reason. The performance is marvelous, and the recording shimmers. A must have for Spirit fans! -

Audience 8.4 Audience 9.6 Audience 8.6 - I found the ’68 show to be surprisingly strong for the early vintage, a definite surprise even with some hiss present which could theoretically be mitigated with a re-master but you don’t want to sacrifice any highs as they are just hanging on at the upper end. The ’69 is the famous Texas Pop Festival and of course is the best sounding one, and finally the ’70 show which really surprised me, a tad distant from the stage but clear, and I rather enjoyed the live atmosphere. Audience 7.6 - Guitar cuts through quite well on this one. DVD is pro shot from French TV 1970 and features the original band members. DVD is a real treat. -
Audience 8.8 - Quite an amazing find! A very rare and previously uncirculated show that sounds very clean and close, and it’s the original line-up! I have to categorize this as a must have. -
Audience 6.9–7.2 - Tries to get better, sometimes it does. It’s a genuine 1969 audience tape for sure, but at least I can actually hear the band, and like I said at times this rises up to maybe a 7.2. -
Audience 9.7 - This was broadcast live at the time but I can tell you it is not a soundboard. There is too much ambience (a small club apparently) that gives you the impression they did not even need to run a board feed for this broadcast. It’s superbly captured, the detail, the depth, man…this is how they should record all concerts! Amazing stuff. Soundboard 8.5 - It’s really hard to tell but I think it’s a board because of the way the sound is mixed. Vocals are way up front, and then they get pushed a little back, and there’s a lack of surrounding noise. There is some tape noise present. The audience noise you do hear sounds like it is picked up from one of the stage mics. -
Audience 8.1 - Not that bad, but vocals a little back, and some tape distortion in the mid band somewhere that does not bother but it is there lurking. The Mellotron adds a nice sweeping atmosphere. Audience 9.1 - This show is divided into two sets, with both sounding similar but the 1st set is just a touch rougher in the sense that I hear a tiny bit of channel overload (not distorted!) and less clarity (but not harmfully so) than the 2nd set. Overall, both are very well recorded and I would imagine set 2 was broadcast as this was typical around this time and other Rosyln, NY. “My Father’s Place” shows were indeed broadcast on local FM radio. So, while it seems Set 2 is the better audio (fractionally), I would say it was recorded for broadcast and this is the pre-broadcast tape recorded from the audience with open mics…yes? No? Maybe so? I have no idea…it’s really good but not radio station broadcast good so maybe this show was never recorded for broadcast at all. Multiple sources used to make up this first volume of the 70’s series. * The first is a really cool 1967 show that is professionally recorded in an amateur fashion. So, yes, a pro recording but whoever engineered it was slow on the uptake, levels are peaked, the mix is funky, oh well, it could have been much better but for a super early Spirit show this is PURE GOLD and the surprise is how jazzy they are here. * The second disc comes from another early gig (1969) from Seattle and is Audience 8.3 for the clarity but has some hiss, and is not exactly hi-fi but you can hear everything very nicely and clear, pretty much, maybe vocals are a little buried but that is all. * Disc 3 is the continuation of the previous plus begins the Chicago 1975 gig (Disc 4) which is Soundboard 8.8 and has lovely atmosphere, and I think it is in stereo, or at least the way it is panned, mimics a stereo effect. -
CD 1 - Audience 8.8 / CD 2 - Audience 7.7 / CD 3 - Audience 7.2 / CD 4 - Audience 8.3 Some tape problems persist but they are not severe and do not affect the tape or show for that matter, but for a minor faint pop type sound. -
Radio Broadcast 9.5 - Sparkling! This is THE one to have in my opinion – the sound is really good and very vibrant. Austin rural rock that had built up a good following and had incredible promise but for some reason their first recorded album never got picked up by anyone and remained shelved. As far as I know, this CD is the only way to hear this lost album, it's so obscure not even the track names are known. The band did change their name eventually and recorded another album which I know very little about. -
Unsure of year of original release but this is a CD reissue on the Acid Symposium Records. CD is new, never played. -
Audience 9.2 - Good location, excellent equipment, focus, and a good PA system in the venue means only one thing – an excellent audience tape. This is really well done. Soundboard 9.0 - For those who want to know what Bruce Springsteen was about before he went all FM friendly singer songwriter, look no further than this hard and heavy hard rock jam fest from 1971. I do not like Bruce, I think he’s kind of a big douche, but damn you have to give him props because he is a rock and roll survivor and this early stuff smokes. -
Audience 8.5 - Slightly low recording levels meaning go ahead and turn up the volume on this one, and thankfully there’s no distortion. Recording is clear, not overly dynamic (it is metal after all) but you’ll probably enjoy this immensely if you understand that it’s really about the lyrics and the stage banter. Always fun, and it’s two discs so you get a lot of songs! -
Soundboard 9.2 - Another fun show with the boys. Come on, really if you can’t get into this you just need to drink a couple of beers and relax, maybe smoke a doob or something. -

Audience 8.7 - A rare tape of the 1974 tour, you gotta grab these whenever they appear because unfortunately there are precious few. This one does not disappoint in the quality dept. despite being pretty friggin’ loud and close to taper…almost crosses over the line pegging the meters into distortion but it doesn’t…it would have been a total loss if it had.
