Audience 8.5 - What this tape represents is an almost uncanny time warp back in time, the sound that the taper captured is amazing – the mix and separation of instruments is what damages an otherwise exceptional sounding tape. With that being said, it’s got a lot to appreciate regardless of the actual music contained herein. For instance, once the soundman dials the mix in better, the music does sound MUCH better and guitar rises slightly higher up front making for a more enjoyable listening experience. The sound of this tape is good, with a punchy upper midrange but not uncomfortable, and roaring “low end” and I say that because while bass is not well defined, it certainly is present in the lower frequencies here. This tape will grow on you, and I promise once you start, and get past the first song (where the live mix is getting dialed in), you’ll find yourself more and more sucked in to it. Ultrasonic Studios 1969 Pro Studio 9.4 - Excellent stuff, I’d never heard this one before and I was pleasantly surprised to finally hear such pristine unofficial tracks by this great band. Tucson 1972 Audience 8.7 - A rambly, jambly sounding tape that allows you to hear every instrument with emphasis on drums, vocals and keyboards believe it or not…in such a way that sucks you right into it almost as if it were at a revival meeting. Yes, there’s a tiny amount of overload here (understandable) but I gotta tell you, this is a very, very exciting recording. Memphis 1972 Soundboard 9.7 - Scintillating stuff! Razor sharp guitar, pounding drums, and beautiful bass all interwoven and mixed for maximum clarity and separation of instruments. They were smart to allow some bleed from the audience to give this tape plenty of electric live atmosphere. SUPERB! Lakeland 1980 Soundboard 9.3 - So it’s the early 1980’s and I have to be honest but I would not have given Prince a chance. But, listening to these recordings today I hear real drums, crunchy guitars with an almost psychedelic tone, and confident rhythm section all belting out some decent funk and pop (although I don’t quite hear the precedent to superstardom). Stoke 1974 Audience 8.4 - A loud tape with a touch of stadium boom, but not anything that approaches irritation. It sounds like it’s in stereo, I hear guitar in one channel and bass in the other which is kinda cool. The instruments are all clearly discernible here making for a tape that sits on the upper side of very good. Tulsa 1975 Audience 8.7 - A tape that has a good, snappy live sound and a pretty good mix for the ears. The music is delivered to you through a tight mid-range and a snare drum that hovers over everything making it instantly delightful. I rather do like this one! Orange, France 1975 Audience 8.8 - A fine tape, one that really has good separation of instruments, and very decent dynamics. When the guitar solos, the sound seems to glide above you, so that kind of effect and atmosphere puts this show into a category I call “Repeat Listening” because you will go to it again. Amsterdam 1976 Audience 8.8 - Brassy, but enough mid and bottom to smooth that out nicely. A touch of cymbal sizzle but again there’s enough of all other frequencies here that not any one stands out in an annoying fashion. This is a well-balanced tape with some real life in it. NY 1978 SDBRD 9.3 - Really nice sounding, warm, well mixed. A couple of songs fade in, and a couple fade out, so that is unusual in my opinion for a board tape but it’s most of the songs, it isn’t drastic…and all the songs are instrumental anyway. A great one for the collector! Nuremberg 1980 SDBRD 9.5 - Another really good tape and excellent show, with minor complaint being a couple of fade ins and a couple of fade outs which only really may have an effect on those people who are intimately familiar with the band’s material. Disc 1 Soundboard 8.8 - This sounds like it could be from a television special as it has that telltale compression, and to my ears it sounds dated but in a cool way. A little narrow but clear and retains a sharpness, so you get every nuance of guitar but at the expense of any real bottom end – still is very good for the early vintage. Disc 2 Soundboard 9.6 except last two songs Audience 9.2 - This disc showcases some of the very best stuff I’ve heard, really a joy and fine quality too. Disc 3 SDBRD 9.7 - I hate to say it, but this is almost too good. At times though, guitar is mixed a little low, but it seems it’s only when he is on a certain setting on his guitar for whatever reason. Mostly it’s mixed real well. The audio fidelity is crystal clear, I think it needs more atmosphere…although to be fair Roy’s guitar creates that in spades. Audience 8.7 and SDBRD 8.8/9.1 - Both sources are clean and decent, the first disc is actually a radio broadcast but they used a tape source that was recorded by a fan in the audience! Sounds a little distant but clear with good atmospherics, just unusual to know how they did it. The other disc contains a board tape made at the Fillmore which is very good but more than that really shows the crossing over the line by “country” artists into uncharted territory. This music reminds me of what would happen if you took The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Beatles and told them to pretend they are Eagles flying around the Bay Area. Audience 8.8 - Quite the find! This is a strong and clear tape, although I sense the taper is quite new at it because for starters he manages only part of the show (although it’s most of the show) and second he says things (he’s clear on the recording, but thankfully not too chatty) that indicate he’s a noob. The audience around him gets into the show but are not overly intrusive in the recording. I found the guitar solo portion of the show to be the most electric as it sounds so close and clear…very cool! I like the I’m So Glad/Somebody Get Me A Doctor combo because it is one of those rare improvisational moments that you don’t know where it will go. Taper loves to stop and start too close to the songs sometimes cutting off endings it’s infuriating (and again indicates he’s a beginner) but thanks go to him for doing this one regardless. Soundboard 9.2 - The Paris is a little better, but the Edinburgh is also a good board tape showing perhaps a few more signs of its age.
