Formed in 1969, legendary heavy Southern psyche rock group Josefus took Texas by storm, recording a monumental LP (Dead Man) and touring throughout Texas in 1969 (opening act for Grand Funk on most of the Texas dates). Somehow, through all the craziness, they have kept it together (original singer and guitarist) all these years and continue to record and play live. This CD showcases an exceptional live performance on one side (this was originally done on vinyl which is now out of print) and a rare 1978 studio session on the other side (was lost for over 35 years!). A killer disc! -
FM Broadcast 9.0 - This material was broadcast in 1974, and so you can tell the performances were somewhat pro or at least held up pretty well. There is a slightly amateurish nature to the old tapes but therein lies the charm, since Joni herself pours charm out of her like maple syrup. A great collection of early vintage classic American folk. Pro 8.8 - Recorded for TV broadcast, this is really great stuff with only perhaps the age of the tape coming into play, but not in any kind of annoying way, just maybe a bit of tape noise in the background. All in all it’s really quite good. -
SDBRD 9.5 - Expertly recorded and of course this show is pure gold if you enjoy genuine American blues because the guys on stage are THE BLUES personified. Incredible performance, amazing quality! Audience 8.3 - Both shows recorded by same taper so sound quality consistent throughout. This is another one of those “right in the middle of the action” tapes, where literally you sense the surroundings, and settle yourself in to what will be a wild night of rock and roll music. Quality is decent, without too much in the way of dynamics, but also this is not a muddy, crappy recording, it’s just not showcasing a wide range of tones. What you do get is a total immersion, and a very real sense of the electricity in the air (and in the excitable crowd). FOGHAT Music Hall Boston MA. Audience 8.3 - An aged tape that still contains a very good frequency from low to high – maybe a touch on the thin side but overall this whole thing is very fun to listen to. -
Audience 8.0 - This is an explosive sounding document, thrilling actually. Sounds like it’s right in front of PA on Johnny’s side, but does not distort. So cool! -
Audience 8.2 - Very live with that festival vibe all over it. Clear guitar right in your face. -
Radio Broadcast 8.9 - Two different sources were used to make one complete broadcast and as such there is slight audio change throughout, but all is good because it is all very good! Some signs of time and dust but for the most part it is a tape that delivers…and what you might notice is how articulate Johnny’s playing is around this time. Soundboard 8.7 - This is a pro recording but what hurts it is the upper end frequencies, they seem a bit shrill to me. Now, the good news is that you can EQ this and since the highs are so present, you won’t lose them with any EQ’ing. So I think this tape is a sound engineer’s dream. -
Soundboard 8.8 - A good live radio broadcast with emphasis on the guitar where it should be of course. Sound ranges towards treble and that gives guitar lots of bite, however everything else is right there. -
Audience 8.5 - A good and clear tape that stays pretty much in the center channel, without a bunch of dynamics but also no distractions either. It’s a solid capture of a great period for Johnny Winter. -
Audience 7.4 - Consider this a big upgrade to whatever was previously circulating. From original master cassette tape, the sound is focused on guitar primarily, with everything else being somewhat unclear or just not as distinct in the mix. I would call this average, but I am happy to have an upgrade to what was once very much below average. Besides, it’s classic Johnny Winter And – perhaps many people’s favorite line up. -
Audience 9.7 - If you were previously unaware of this tape, get ready for a supersonic blast of low down and dirty twin guitar American Blues Rock and Roll like you won’t believe. I don’t know how it can much better than this, I mean, it’s like you’re sitting right in front of the stage. (please be aware there is a very loud whistle blast after Boney Maroney...you've been warned!) Audience 7.4 - 7.7 - Varies because most of the show is pretty decent coming from a master cassette tape, but towards the end it decreases just a little bit and makes me think taper had to relocate or something. I believe this show was recorded a little later than the official live album recordings. -

Audience 9.2 - Amazing recording! Not that it is perfect, in fact, the audio mix is off, but it is off in a spectacular way. So, it’s basically guitar, I mean, plugged directly into your brain and proceeding to torch your brain cells until they are dry spots on the carpet. Yeah, it’s like that, but don’t worry if you do not hear vocals perfectly, or bass is too low, or drums are not pounding because while all that is here, it is predominately the Johnny Winter and his hypnotizing psychedelic blues at maximum volume show. Audience 8.4 - Surprisingly good, knowing just how few good audience tapers are from this period of the early Johnny Winter And. Now, the tape does show signs of age, mainly with some light hiss present and occasionally the volume decreases but not in a really annoying way at all. This is some fiery playing and a pretty clear, and sometimes dynamic tape. -
Pro FM Broadcast 8.8 - Sounds like the band is right at the top of their game, with Johnny inspired and ripping out one superb lead after another flawlessly. -
Audience 8.4 - This is a very rare glimpse at a short lived incarnation of Johnny Winter’s band, mainly the addition of his brother Edgar. So it’s an interesting tape, sounds VERY close to the main P.A. system and consequently has some upper mid crowding which makes for a strange mixture of a tape that is both clear and bright, and overcrowded in the upper mid band. It’s good sounding but does not give you much separation of instruments. For collectors this has to be considered a very important tape though. -
Audience 7.8 - A large hall sound, but cleanly captured. Kind of sounds like you are there – tons of atmosphere without boominess. Pleasant! -
Studio and Live 8.7 – 9.9 - A beautiful collection of recordings featuring the three original members (Tommy Shannon, Uncle John Turner, Johnny Winter) during various time periods over the decades. Most notable are the inclusion of some very rare 1969 studio sessions, and reunion material taken from Willie Nelson’s Arlyn Studios back in 1992. This material is outstanding and has yet to be officially released. CD 1&2 SDBRD/AUD Matrix 9.3 CD 2&3 Soundboard 9.5 - A great overview of John’s music contained herein. I admit I wasn’t too knowledgeable of his stuff, I knew his name (he is from Houston, he was just one of our locals) and had numerous chances to see him live…but sadly never did. I should have. This music is pretty basic, but will remind you a bit of Bob Dylan, and will entertain you endlessly with the lyrical wit and story-telling nature of the songs.
