Audience 8.7 - I had a hard time determining whether it was the recording or the PA that caused this tape to fall below the usually excellent quality recordings coming out of the Inglewood Forum around this same time. It’s not terrible; the main issue was an overcrowding of the middle bandwidth. So you get plenty of bottom end and soaring high end (where most guitar leads and vocals, and yes, cymbals are clear) but a lack of separation in that crucial middle. That leaves us with a tape clearly made on decent gear, somewhere in the middle of the venue it sounds like, and likely a master source (zero tape noise), but just not delivering the kind of clarity you would want when you are trying to hear the magical guitar interplay, especially Joe Walsh who just has his own musicality that perks your ears up. Still, a good tape that is worthy of exploration and much appreciated being from that wonderful line-up that featured perennial fave Joe Walsh. Audience 8.7 - Not too bad for 1972, this tape has some nice energy, and not to say it doesn’t have limitations, but it seems to deliver a lot more than the expectation. You have to accept that the hall is a touch echoey, or at least the guitar seems to bounce off the wall to give a very short reverb effect. It’s not a distraction at all, in fact it is exactly how it sounded at the show – the recording is very accurate. Audience 9.1 - This show is divided into two sets, with both sounding similar but the 1st set is just a touch rougher in the sense that I hear a tiny bit of channel overload (not distorted!) and less clarity (but not harmfully so) than the 2nd set. Overall, both are very well recorded and I would imagine set 2 was broadcast as this was typical around this time and other Rosyln, NY. “My Father’s Place” shows were indeed broadcast on local FM radio. So, while it seems Set 2 is the better audio (fractionally), I would say it was recorded for broadcast and this is the pre-broadcast tape recorded from the audience with open mics…yes? No? Maybe so? I have no idea…it’s really good but not radio station broadcast good so maybe this show was never recorded for broadcast at all. Studio Quality 9.7 - A lot of collectors may think they are getting the same stuff over and over again in a different package but with the Prince studio collections you really are getting something different, but that might just mean alternate takes, mixes, or a different session with different players. Prince did like to experiment a lot and might want to try a song a hundred different ways before he was satisfied, similar maybe to Jimi Hendrix. I always find something to enjoy and always end up admiring Prince more and more after each listen…which is why I keep offering these titles because it lets me listen to even more Prince! Studio Quality 9.7 - Another fantastic collection of stuff Prince did in his studio and on air with disc 2 being the unreleased Milk and Honey album with Tamar.. What struck me about this particular set is right off the bat, the first track on disc one just blew me away. It’s an extended remix of Computer Blue with the sickest guitar, a real grinding, psychedelic and metallic tone that he squeezes to maximum effect and doesn’t want it to end. Neither did I!! Soundboard 9.6 - A great sound happening here, but what I really love most about it is the brassy, killer bass. Obviously it’s everything, it’s all great, but Prince, even being mainly onto a funky, keyboard, drum, bass approach on this tour (guitar is present in places just not emphasized) which might not be everyone’s cup of tea, still is able to engage this old rock and roller. Audience 8.7 - There is something very special in these amateur audio documents. While you could be overly critical of them for failing to live up to modern sonic standards, the truth is that not only is the audio acceptable as it is, but as a moment captured forever on tape that not only manages to document the entire evening (opening act included) but does so with few blemishes. It's decent quality too, although does not offer extremely dynamic low end or crisp high end, it's a recording that stays mainly in the middle with better definition on guitars which is fine. Audience 8.8 - Another amazing historical document that gives us the entire picture of what it was like to attend a rock concert in Boston in the early 70's. It's one evening out of 365 other evenings in the calendar year but it is a year that I did not get to experience anything like this, being that I was still in elementary school. It's a glaring example of what I was missing! Taper was not only prescient in capturing all the acts but he manages to do so with minimal problems and in very decent quality. Original tape transfers received recent treatment and have never sounded better, it makes me wonder why this material never got picked up by any of the boot labels in Japan or Europe for production. Audience 8.7 - OK, so I totally understand why someone might pass this up- but I think you would be missing something special. It’s an audience recording, very very deep into the crowd, it’s noisy, it’s not fantastic but it is great – now here’s the rub: If you are reading this review, this can be considered a spoiler alert. It took me a complete song before I realized the audience was not a part of the show. The people near the mic sound like they are a part of the stage show, or at least they did to me. I felt like I was in New Orleans but its New York City. I liked this performance, and I tolerate the recording, I came away after listening to this feeling I understood Prince just a little better. After this review I think it’s only fair to warn you – on a few songs the drummer’s high hat sounds like a missile shooting through your speakers – it’s unnerving and I don’t think there’s much you can do but wait for the next song. Studio 9.7 - More spectacular studio works by Prince who commands the proceedings in a Hendrix-like manner. Listen to the different guitar effects that he uses, how it suits the song and how different he makes it sound when he needs something. He has a bag of tricks let’s just say. I need atmosphere, I want to feel the space around me, the venue itself is a part of the event. Audience tapes of high quality can sometimes deliver more atmosphere than the best soundboard, and sometimes it’s necessary if you want to relive an event to have that atmosphere included in the recording. Audience 8.8 - I am very thankful this recording exists, so few tapes from around this time that are clean and audible. Now, it gets off to a bumpy start but smoothes out and remains consistent for the duration. It’s taken from I would say the middle of the venue but does not suffer from typical distance recordings. The main P.A. system is strong, so you get a good signal here, all instruments present and accounted for. Vocals remain very much up front in the mix, guitars follow. All in all this is really outstanding and the time period is optimal. Audience 9.5 - This may be a pro audience recording because it has some of the hallmarks of it being managed by someone other than a concert goer. Not saying 100% certain, but it’s just too good and clean, and free of interference but who knows maybe it’s just a really astute taper? All I know is that this material and this quality make for a real revelation for people like me who glossed over the albums. Damn good stuff, with a stellar cast of characters. Same with the San Francisco 1977 tape which I include in this rating but is a soundboard…similar stellar sound quality maybe 9.6 but has a little more hiss present. Still, it is EXCELLENT! Soundboard 9.2 - I think this right here is as good as it will get to a complete Tommy Bolin Purple gig in soundboard quality and, here’s the important thing, reasonably cohesive playing. To be honest, after listening to this, it’s kind of apparent that Deep Purple was probably not the best vehicle for Tommy’s talents. Not that he can’t play, but that Deep Purple’s music was too one dimensional. That being said it is still pretty good despite the erratic mix – sometimes guitar is up front and sometimes it is buried. With a recording like this where taper is using high quality equipment, the end result is only as good as the PA sound since that is what your mics capture. It’s not super close up or terribly far from stage, seems to be in a nice spot and everything is clear with decent dynamics. Now, it’s a recording from a rowdy crowd but even with that I felt they did not ruin this or intrude unnecessarily – in fact it seemed they wanted to listen to the band and not hold conversations or stupid hooting and whistling during songs. Audience 8.4 - Unfortunately this is not the best recording. It’s a big stadium, but the flaws are not the typical big stadium flaws of too far away and echoey, rather a preponderance of bass. At times it lets up though, I mean, the rest of the band comes through (vocals being most audible) and you can hear what is going on but you have to round down some of that bass. A mastering job was done, and a lot of the boom was mitigated, and that is nice because this is the one tour that seems to be lacking in decent recordings (Jazz Tour). I’m thinking this one is for Queen completists, but with such nice artwork accompanying this title it’s worth grabbing if there is a discount going on. Audience 9.1 - A good, clean and bright recording that is clear and detailed. Maybe I would say it could use more bottom end but I am nitpicking, it’s got all the essential things a listener needs to be able to “relax” when listening. You don’t have to strain to hear everyone on stage but mix-wise I would place bass and drums more to the back, relatively speaking, on this tape. Audience 9.5 - Hard to really improve upon this one - it's lovely in all regards. Great, clean highs and round lows with a great mid range. It's highlighted by a respectful crowd that rarely intrudes while the band is performing but very enthusiastic between songs. Wish I was there. This recording allows me to be there and hear what I missed. Audience 9.2 - This is a really decent recording, it does sort of lean towards an upper mid range emphasis but not to the tape’s detriment, it’s just that is where most of the action is. The drums have a realistic sound, very live and thunderous without being boomy. Vocals are incredibly present and up front here, so this recording has an immediate impact when you listen and it captivates you all the way through to the end.
