Audience 9.0 - This is one of those recordings that really grows on you. You kind of have to adjust a little, especially through the first couple of songs. Taper begins to slowly sort of find the spot, and the recording gets better, a good mix actually although I wasn’t crazy about Tony’s guitar tone around this time…and it’s only Tony who is still original Sabs but his crew is highly competent (not crazy about the big rock stadium mannerisms of Tony Martin). I like the vocals of Martin, don’t get me wrong, but the between song banter is a little over the top. Listen to this without bias, it’s not Sabbath but it’s a great fucking band with Tony Iommi on guitar. A good, clear tape with a tiny touch of tape saturation due to the taper being so close but it’s great nonetheless. Studio 10 - Well, this is a rarity! Not only has this flown completely below most collectors radars, but it also qualifies as being a perfect recording…and it doesn’t necessarily begin as such (although I’d still rate it a 9.8), it becomes one. Why is that? Because it has all the elements of greatness and not just the audio quality. Eric is heard here in a more jazzy setting, with players who are well versed in music theory and are top shelf players in their own right – maybe it pushes Clapton to explore more deeply, and he does…although he still manages to make it more bluesy which to me is really cool because it gives these sessions the swing that can be sometimes absent in technical jazz. This obviously was let out on purpose, the recordings are too clean and if indeed they are rehearsals, they are very dialed in and sounding more like an album is being recorded. But if you listen super closely, there are moments where you can just hear the faintest of mic bleed through and it seems to be the kind of talk, or “shouts” that you might hear during a soundcheck or rehearsal.  This is a highly recommended listen to anyone who wants to hear Eric Clapton at his tastiest best. Audience 9.2 - This merits quite a bit of adoration for hardcore fans and collectors because it is a beloved show that fell through the cracks of time due to it being so incomprehensibly cut up. We don’t know why it was that way, and therefore an otherwise excellent tape was relegated to the proverbial dustbin…until today. The composite was done by an adoring fan with an ear, by taking bits here and there from other recordings only days apart from the Chicago date, was able to manage a very compelling final product. Audience 9.5 - Many of you will be surprised by my rare high rating for an audience tape…but man, I gotta tell you, this is 100% justified. Yes, it’s sonically really nice, but it delivers that magical quality that real fans know about and is kind of hard to explain the uninitiated. Let me try: you feel like you are seated there at the show, you feel the anticipation, you know what is about to happen yet can’t quite believe how actually incredible it truly is. Enough hyperbole, you get it, I love this one. But to be fair, the recording quality is more like a 9.2, still great, but it’s the atmosphere, the spaciousness, the rolling drums that seem to pan across the speakers, the great sound mix, all of it equals pure magic and a legitimate 9.5. Audience 9.3 - This is what I would call a definitive release in that I think if you wanted to know what Sabbath was in ’87 you can use this as a reference. For one thing, it sounds great – and another reason is because it sounds like the band is doing what it had in mind with the line-up and sound. A new direction maybe, but in the same way that maybe Technical Ecstasy was also a new direction. It’s still Sabbath, the bone structure is all there, but the smile has changed…and it has a place in the discography. FM Broadcast 9.8 - Just about as good as it can get, this captures the moment and freezes it forever in such granular detail that it feels like you are sitting right next to Dickie’s amp. It makes you appreciate his playing like never before. I mean, I play the guitar, but I have no concept of how you turn it into an extension of yourself to the degree that it is practically impossible to make even the slightest mistake. Not that his playing is perfection, it almost is, but just that he uses the instrument to convey so much feeling that it is impossible even to tell if he ever misses a note or phrases something wrong. Does that make sense? NOTE: The artwork shows disc two with only the last two tracks but the set has been tracked to include "Jessica" and "The Way Love Goes" on disc 2...so the artwork will not be changed to reflect the song order it just is what it is. Audience 9.3 - The great thing about this performer is that his sound and style is timeless – it might as well be 1976 because after listening to his shows from the 70’s, I can’t tell much difference between then and this 1990 show. The show sounds great, it is rich and full bodied with an especially beautiful drum sound and bass is meaty without being overbearing although it sometimes shakes your speakers!

Soundboard 9.5 - Somewhat controversial, this tour declared to the world that Bob Dylan would not be owned by a corporation, a label, any entity of this earth…so yeah, when you have something to prove you come out swinging. This stuff is actually some of his best stuff, even if there’s that unmistakable gospel and soul influence, it’s still very much Bob Dylan music. Excellent sound, but if I had to be hyper critical of anything it would be my own personal desire for louder lead guitars.

Audience 9.2 - Very nice job by taper to capture a show on good gear that allows the listener to feel a part of the experience – yes there’s some hoots and hollers but you won’t be annoyed, you will kind of agree and maybe do the same. The recording is close and bright with amazing atmospherics.

New York 1968 Soundboard 8.7/8.5 - This is a strange old tape, don’t get me wrong I am very happy to get to hear it, but it is a tale of two tapes…to my ears. It’s starts off, the first few tracks, as a relatively “clean” board feed, perhaps an AM radio live broadcast even, because it has that sound to it – like if you were listening to a radio broadcast with headphones (and took the headphones off slightly). Then, the tape changes to what I have to believe is another source, and one that is considerably more raucous and menacing. I can’t even say for sure the second part is a board, might be, but my guess is an on stage reel to reel recording (possibly done by John Sinclair?). It’s ok for what it is, both “sources” are welcomed into my personal collection since there’s so little of the live five out there.

Hollywood 1971 Audience 8.6 - Despite the lowish rating, this is very listenable. The main issue for me, and hence the low quality rating, is the drop off in the vocals. It’s not out front of the mix enough, but then, guitar (and bass) is the highlight so maybe that’s not so bad!  Overall, I think if you love this band, this old tape is going to make you happy. One may wonder if a modern re-mastering would help this show come to life and the short answer is “maybe”, because it sounds like this one is already teetering on the edge of the bandwidth and to attempt sonic shenanigans might push it off the cliff.  I’d like to hear an expert give it a try though.

Studio Quality 9.5 - The average rating here in the mid 9.0’s because except for the occasional minor hiss, this material consists of professionally recorded, live in studio sessions. Good to have it all in a well constructed collection like this.
