Toronto 1978 FM Broadcast 9.7 - Ok, now we are just being spoiled! A fantastic, vibrant, near perfect recording of a superb performance! In fact, it’s actually several performances, where they just took the best of each show and broadcast it. I am fine with it! It’s great man. It will sound much worse than it is if you listen to disc one first (normal operating procedure) but I have to say this recording is still worth having for fans of Steely Dan as they did not tour much and so there's only so much from 1974. Audience 8.7 - Almost every recording from this venue sounds like a large, cavernous venue no matter where the taper is sitting. Thankfully this one is not as much, and the music is just that much more immediate and clear, so for this venue I would say this tape shines. Audience 8.4 - An uneven mix is the fault, other than that it’s fine. Sounds like taper was on one side of the P.A. and got a lot of one guitar, and it sounds great, very menacing tone, but we lose some other elements that sort of appear and then disappear. The recording is not hard to enjoy even with that issue, for me it was because of the good live tone and having that guitar so close it made me feel like I was seated with the taper hearing what he was hearing. Audience 8.8 - Certainly a decent sounding tape, the band sounds a lot more grunge-like than glam pop here which is a good thing. The PA sound mix is off for a bit, with the Third Eye Girl guitar being buried in favor of Prince’s lead guitar role which hurts the interplay (as in the jam during Let’s Go Crazy) but as it goes they seem to get a little better with that. Soundboard 9.7 - As crystal clear as it could possibly get. Why it doesn’t get a 10 rating? Because in my opinion a perfect recording is not just crystal clear but has numerous other elements that separate it from just another clear board tape. Not to denigrate this at all, because it is great – but a crystal clear near perfect board tape is just that, a near perfect board tape that does not reflect ambience, atmosphere, vibe (although not always), and other elements of a live concert. Audience 8.4 - This tape starts off rough but gradually opens up and ends up quite listenable especially considering this originates from an early tour stop in England 1980. These tapes are few and far between, so grab it is my advice. One thing I noticed, the sound timbre is rather eerie, a spooky kind of effect I can’t explain and it is magnified by the fact that Randy’s guitar is clearest in the mix. I could not help myself while listening to ponder what may have been, such an advanced musical sensibility that would have only gotten better. Sure, he was a great, mad front man in Sabbath, but I really didn’t see him as a solo act. Ozzy always struck me as crazy, fearless, yet almost child-like. He fitted well within the Sabbath context, and as part of a group; but on his own? How wrong I was. Nobody could have predicted just how successful his career would turn out to be. But it was obvious from the first time I saw him in concert and heard him play his new songs that Ozzy was going to be OK, more than OK in fact. The new album had some great tracks in “Crazy Train”, “Goodbye to Romance”, and “Mr. Crowley”, and he included Sabbath favorites “Iron Man”, “Children of the Grave”, and “Paranoid” in the live show, so how could he not be great? Oh, and Randy Rhoads was simply an incredible guitarist, just as good as his legend suggests. The tour called at Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle Mayfair and Sunderland Mayfair. The line-up of Blizzard of Ozz was Ozzy (of course) on vocals, the late and truly great guitarist Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley (Rainbow) on bass, Lee Kerslake (Uriah Heep) on drums and local lad Don Airey on keyboards (replaced by Lindsey Bridgewater for the tour). Support came from those excellent Welsh rock heroes Budgie. -
