FM Broadcast? 9.7 - I am not 100% sure but this could be a broadcast because I occasionally heard some static before a song which is indicative of a broadcast. Now, this is pretty darn clean and hot too, it does not suffer from typical broadcast compression, so it could also be a pre-FM board tape. I just don’t know, but I do know it is killer! -
Disc 1 Soundboard 9.8 Disc 2 Audience 8.7 Disc 3 Audience 87/Soundboard 9.4 Disc 4 Soundboard 9.4 This set comprises four discs full of superbly performed music by some very skilled musicians. The only audience recording on this set actually is not that bad, but compared to immaculate soundboard tapes, your ears will need to adjust but you will notice that it is a very good capture with some occasional irregularities with the sound mix where the music gets “further” away (not literally, just something to do with the recording), but overall I think it is ok and worthwhile to enjoy. Audience 8.7 - Sometimes a recording that may not be rated in the 9's might be passed over out of hand by picky collectors. That would be a huge mistake in this case. These are both unbelievably cool in a variety of ways - and the sound quality is not even an issue. The audio is fine for a super loud British metal band that comes to Texas and plays smallish venues - you can hear everything clearly. I would say that you might not get the wide spectrum, the sound is going to be focused on the middle range of instruments which gives you good guitar/vocal action at the expense of maybe the kick drum, and definition of bass, so who cares? It's not a deal-breaker at all because once you start listening you soon realize how kick ass these shows are. This is the stuff man! NOTE: Both of these shows have different dates than the single CD releases found on this site. You won't be duplicating anything, they are different dates for both the San Antonio and Kileen gigs. Audience 8.3 - Do not let the “average” sound rating prevent you from selecting this AMAZING rarity. I could write paragraphs on why this is a must have for any self-respecting Priest fan, but suffice it to say that this is why I even collect live music. The details of the recording are but one small part of the equation, but I will note that the tape suffers from two main problems – it’s a little muffled and it’s a little hissy. There is also an unfortunate cut where the solo begins in Victim of Changes (could it not have happened on any other song?), I think this is the tape flip. The quality worsens a bit after that, but there’s also good news to report: The tape has been remastered, revealing much more music that was probably buried under muck and noise for decades. What you end up with is a very intense show, and an audience absolutely being blown to smithereens. I can imagine after having to deal with mediocre top 40 and disco music, new wave, etc. having a band like Judas Priest I mean, that had to be like a sledgehammer to the skull because let’s face it, for 1979 these guys were way heavy, and not in a punkish Motorhead heavy but a very competent, sinister kind of heavy. That does come through on this tape. Without a remastering it would have been tough to listen to it, but it’s actually not hurtful on the ears, the actual frequency range is comfortable, and there are times where it is even very decent. Overall it is simply one of those you really have to just get and appreciate for what it is because it quite simply is DEVASTATING. -
Audience 9.2 - I rated this highly because even though the levels are hot there is no distortion and it’s a decent live mix with some atmosphere present too (you can distinguish the delay on the guitar and echo on vocals over all the intense action of the band which is a pleasant thing). It’s also a great gig! -
Soundboard 9.5 - Spectacular sound, ferocious performance! This is, without a doubt, one absolute must-have for anyone with even a remote interest in Judas Priest…but I’ll take it even further and say ANYONE who loves hard rock should get this one. Audience 8.6 - A tape that has gone through extensive rehabilitation and is now something I can recommend to fans. First off, you no longer have a low volume, crowded tape – this new re-master has the sound panned wider which allowed the muddier channel to be dealt with properly…all the work has paid off because, quite frankly, any 70’s-‘80’s Priest tape needs to be considered as historically valuable, right up to around 1986 IMHO. Leicester Audience 9.2 - Very clear, close, with very detailed highs and a solid, driving low end to round out the sound. Rob Halford sounds like he's in your living room. Super lively! Sheffield Audience 9.1 - This one is solid, the guitar and vocals are the stars of the show, but drums sit very nicely here and the bass is pumping away without being boomy at all. This is a really nice tape!

Audience 8.8 - A very good recording for the time period, and being a hole-in-the-wall venue in the great state of Texas I can imagine what those Texans must have thought about these leather-clad English hellhounds! Audience 9.0/9.2 - Two very good captures that convey a lot of information, most notably the popularity of the band at such an early stage of their careers, and that the Japanese used very high quality taping gear and knew instinctively how to stealth record a rock show. This is good for historical purposes in that these recordings always eventually take on much more significance with the passage of time. This is my argument for why artists should relax their stances against "bootlegging" because while your moment may be on the surface a commercial venture, in the long run it is a milestone not just for the artist in their career but in the overall culture and therefore should be, if possible, preserved. End of rant.

Audience 8.6 - Pretty solid actually, you get pretty good instrument separation even though the rhythm guitar and bass combination is REALLY powerful on this tape, just thankfully not enough to bury the lead work which rings out over the top of it all. Audience 8.5 - This tape sounds very low generation if not direct from a master, very articulate high end but missing a good solid low end – that does not kill it though. It’s got a good amount of hall atmosphere without actual reverb effect which is fine. Listening to this, I realize that the Turbo tour was really damn good, a lot of good songs and great playing.

Audience 9.2 - A solid one, with a good timbre and pleasantly punchy in the mids, enough highs to get crispness without sizzle, and a smooth bottom end without boom or overwhelming rumble. It’s really quite excellent, with a sound leaping out of the speakers at you! Audience 8.6 - A gem of a show, and a recording that thankfully is pretty decent although it does highlight Halford at the expense of the rest of the band. That actually works well here because Rob is just killing it, hitting every high note and wowing the audience. The musicianship is as always a cut above the rest, hence the reason this band lives on to this day. A keeper! -
Audience 8.8 - A really good tape with a loud and phat bottom end that is probably not that unlike what the actual sound would have been at the show. If the vocals were a little bit louder I would have mistaken this for a radio broadcast. Audience 8.5-9.1 All in all, for what you are privy to hear in this collection (some pretty darn rare bits!), it’s pretty good and listenable. It sounds to me that the band, from 1973 and again a few years later in 1975/78 REALLY progressed, it’s almost like night and day. I do like the early, raw stuff because it shows what a band can become if given half a chance. Judas Priest Rarities 1973-1981 Disc 1 London May 10, 1973 First gig with Halford 1. Cheater 2. Audience 9.6 - Man, someone sure knew what they were doing. This is great, like it could be a broadcast. The tip off for me was when I heard the whistle from someone in the audience near the taper. Audience 8.6 - A surprise because the inclination is to assume this tape will suck – and it’s true it is not high-fidelity but it’s clear and decent and being one of those very few pre-1978 tapes I feel it is a must have for Priest fans.
