Studio Quality 9.4 As expected, these are from studios sessions and having been remastered (to freshen the old tapes up), it sounds quite good. The material sounds a bit dated though, I mean I know it is Bowie but it’s probably not his best stuff in my opinion…some people like it though. David Bowie - Sigma Sound 1974 1. Young Americans [first take] 0:20. An incomplete version with no vocal. 2. Young Americans [second take] 2:57. An incomplete version which ends with David laughing after singing “President Nixon.” 3. Young Americans [third take] 5:40. A complete version with slight lyrical differences to the finished version. 4. Shilling The Rubes 5:09. Complete version. Towards the end of the song David says, “That’s going to be very nice when it’s got its hat on!” 5. I’m A Laser (The Gouster) 6:09. Complete version. 6. After Today 4:42. Complete version but played at a much faster tempo than the version released by Ryko in 1989. 7. Sweet Thing 4:43 (Ava Cherry on lead vocals). Soundboard 8.9 - A good one, if slightly below the expectations of perfection you might be anticipating with a mid 70’s board tape. Occasional phasing, and sometimes a little volume fading as the sound man adjusts things on the fly but it’s greatness is derived from the spectacularly cohesive performance by all the musicians and the sometimes disparagingly different styles they run through in the set. -
Audience 7.8 - Excitement is the order of the day, you can literally feel it. The recording can be praised for effectively capturing a really on performance at a famous venue at the best time of Bowie’s career (some would say). -
Audience 8.8 One of the better sounding tapes from this period, and what’s notable about this show is the live debut of six songs from Aladdin Sane (predating the actual release of the album). About the sound – the live mix does not favor the vocals much, although audible and not murky they are not front and center – but guitar most certainly is and hurrah for that! Audience 8.4 - The quality of the audio is very good, being taped on what sounds like something better than a realistic recorder, but it is somewhat distant from the stage, and consequently a lack of sharpness. So, sound is good on your ears, but maybe sounds like what you would have heard if you were sitting in the upper deck at the Garden. Really gives the listener exactly what they might have experienced attending this concert, a sort of audio time capsule in very good quality but more than that it is LOADED with electric atmosphere. You get a very good sense of time and space. Fantastic! There is one caveat…a microphone drop out does occur towards the end of the show that kind of spoils the flow but it was not something that seemed like taper error so all is forgiven. Audience 7.8 - Concert Hall sound capturing his last show of the tour. I can enjoy this, but I do have to season it to taste, mainly in adjusting just a little bit to give it more bass response. It’s not bad, it’s not great, it’s good and there’s something here to work with in my opinion. -

Audience 8.2 - What was once completely unlistenable has now revealed itself to be a tape that contains music and audible sounds…and sound that can be deciphered easily…although clearly not in any kind of high fidelity. Still what you get from this tape is a VERY obvious indication that Bowie knew where music was headed, and in real time is literally creating a new genre and the audience is in pure ecstasy. Audience 8.7 - This is a fun recording to listen to, sure it’s a bit ramshackle being as if you’ve been tossed into the mosh pit (in 1973 I guess the entire venue resembled a mosh pit full of people too stoned to mosh!), but it’s actually not bad. I imagine by this time the band must realize that glitter and costumes aren’t enough to carry the show when your competition is Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and other bands of that stature. Even if Bowie had anticipated all that by the time of this performance (undoubtedly he did), still the Ziggy Stardust premise seemed to be working well with the audiences as this tape can attest. Audience 7.4 - Lo-fi but all instruments clearly heard, not that bad, you can get into this one. -
Audience 7.8 - Sweet sounding loud guitar, very clear and present, although when they are at full volume it gets a touch muddy. Still very enjoyable! -
Audience 8.5-8.7 - So why the dual rating? Because it is the limitation of the recording equipment that prevents this from earning the solid 8,7 which is a great rating for a long forgotten Ziggy show. So my take on this is that during loud sections, the guitar takes a back seat in the mix while Ziggy is very prominent – which is kind of cool – but during mellower songs (of which there are a few) the mix is much better all around. All in all, this is a pretty good old tape and I don’t think it will disappoint you. Soundboard 9.7 - Super clean with at least a little bit of audience leaking into the stage mics to give a touch of ambience which otherwise leaves more of a one-dimensional sound. So, I like this! -
Audience 9.0 - A very “present” recording, meaning the audio captured on this tape sounds remarkably realistic which is ideal for a live recording. Love it! -
Audience 7.9 - I keep coming back to this show, mainly because I love the vibe in the hall, the crowd progressively getting more and more into it and excitement keeps building. Great stuff!
