Audience 8.4 – 8.7 - A tape that has its share of strengths and flaws. The strengths are that at times it is pretty good, maybe comparable to the Raleigh 70 tape, but other times (such as during Dazed and Confused) the tape shows it has flaws due to age and although these aren’t egregious, they are clear and present and do effect the flow of the concert. For example the audio during Dazed has a speed fluctuation problem that is annoying. The problem stays through the next track but clears up after that and the sound improves dramatically. It is here that the tape shows it has considerable value! Yes, a great find after all. Two versions of the show are represented with both being similar, the different being in how each was re-mastered so it is up to the listener really. I liked the first re-master (CD1) personally. NEW SOURCE Audience 8.7 This is a major upgrade to the previous version (see old review below for comparison) and as such we felt that it had to be offered here as a replacement. If you purchased the previous version (the artwork is untouched, only the music has been replaced in this set) than you are entitled to receive replacement discs without charge (pay postage cost only). Just reach out to us and we will take it from there. If you have never bought this title, than consider this one worthy of the collection. I will offer this caveat though - it is a recording that still shows its share of shortcomings, such as maybe a touch of overload during more bombastic passages (not nearly as bad as previous!), and the last track is incomplete (better an incomplete but listenable track than a totally un-listenable mess). OLD SOURCE Audience 7.2 This one is rather mediocre, although it is not “unlistenable” at all, but compared to other 1977 recordings it is what I would classify as “for completists only”. That being said, I can point out a few moments of this concert that I found interesting in a lot of ways. Like, during Pigs On The Wing Pt.1 you hear large explosions from the audience (possibly fireworks or maybe PA problem?) and you immediately think of Roger and how he’s probably disgusted with the whole thing by this time. Soundboard 9.4 - This is great, not only a very good, strong and clear board tape but also a superb performance by everyone. There is one small caveat here, starting at Bambele and extending through 5 more songs there is the presence of tape hiss (not too bad during the songs but very noticeable when quiet) which was probably the result of the engineer using a tape brand different to whatever he used for the rest of the show which has no tape hiss at all. Audience 9.0 - So you have to deal with the annoyance of the beginnings of almost all of the songs missing as, I assume, taper was trying to preserve tape. I think it’s a reasonable trade off to have this quality recording over the old source which was borderline unlistenable…but complete. I’d rather have this! This is well worth hearing. Roslyn 1976 FM Broadcast 9.2 - Powerful! If you are not familiar with Tommy Bolin and want to learn more, start here! If you are already on the Tommy train – keep riding! This is unbelievably good! Detroit 1976 Audience 8.8 - This is a very good sounding tape in many regards although it is recorded in a large, cavernous arena and therefore you won’t get some of the detail a more intimate venue would give you. The vocals are somewhat drowned out by a guitar sound that is quite huge, with the bass complementing that hugeness to the degree that this show is a guitar/bass tour de force. Thankfully Tommy is the shining star in this recording…and shine he did. Audience 8.7 - One of those tapes that you have to force yourself past the first song which gets mauled as the taper seemingly works to find his spot and get all his shit together…but then it just opens up to a much better experience. It kind of feels like going from the mud puddle to a waterfall, but in reality the tape is still only a little above average – but muddy it is not and that is great news to Van Halen collectors who seek every DLR recording in existence. Audience 9.0 - This is one of those recordings that really grows on you. You kind of have to adjust a little, especially through the first couple of songs. Taper begins to slowly sort of find the spot, and the recording gets better, a good mix actually although I wasn’t crazy about Tony’s guitar tone around this time…and it’s only Tony who is still original Sabs but his crew is highly competent (not crazy about the big rock stadium mannerisms of Tony Martin). I like the vocals of Martin, don’t get me wrong, but the between song banter is a little over the top. Listen to this without bias, it’s not Sabbath but it’s a great fucking band with Tony Iommi on guitar. Radio Broadcast 8.8 - Well, this is one unique sounding recording for a radio broadcast. When I first began to listen I thought this was an open mic style thing but when the guitar kicked in I knew it was probably a live mixed open mic/close mic job. The engineer battles to get a decent mix but it doesn’t reach the levels of what you’d expect of a professional broadcast recording. Does that mean it is bad? No, it’s decent sounding for all intents and purposes…but it certainly could have been a lot better. That said, it’s a great performance by the band. I was introduced to the music of Yes not by the ubiquitous Close To The Edge but from the album Tormato, which they are touring here, and in particular by the song “Don’t Kill The Whale” which I love to this day and which is performed here. A good, clear tape with a tiny touch of tape saturation due to the taper being so close but it’s great nonetheless. It’s not distorted in that sense, it’s just a strong sound coming at you which actually benefits the experience because you feel the energy of the event in a visceral way. Great stuff! Studio 10 - Well, this is a rarity! Not only has this flown completely below most collectors radars, but it also qualifies as being a perfect recording…and it doesn’t necessarily begin as such (although I’d still rate it a 9.8), it becomes one. Why is that? Because it has all the elements of greatness and not just the audio quality. Eric is heard here in a more jazzy setting, with players who are well versed in music theory and are top shelf players in their own right – maybe it pushes Clapton to explore more deeply, and he does…although he still manages to make it more bluesy which to me is really cool because it gives these sessions the swing that can be sometimes absent in technical jazz. This obviously was let out on purpose, the recordings are too clean and if indeed they are rehearsals, they are very dialed in and sounding more like an album is being recorded. But if you listen super closely, there are moments where you can just hear the faintest of mic bleed through and it seems to be the kind of talk, or “shouts” that you might hear during a soundcheck or rehearsal. So it’s near perfect in balance, and nicely widen open in dynamics while at the same time leaving intact some of the open stadium atmospherics (most notable in between songs or during announcements). Audience 9.2 - This merits quite a bit of adoration for hardcore fans and collectors because it is a beloved show that fell through the cracks of time due to it being so incomprehensibly cut up. We don’t know why it was that way, and therefore an otherwise excellent tape was relegated to the proverbial dustbin…until today. The composite was done by an adoring fan with an ear, by taking bits here and there from other recordings only days apart from the Chicago date, was able to manage a very compelling final product. Audience 9.5 - Many of you will be surprised by my rare high rating for an audience tape…but man, I gotta tell you, this is 100% justified. Yes, it’s sonically really nice, but it delivers that magical quality that real fans know about and is kind of hard to explain the uninitiated. Let me try: you feel like you are seated there at the show, you feel the anticipation, you know what is about to happen yet can’t quite believe how actually incredible it truly is. Enough hyperbole, you get it, I love this one. But to be fair, the recording quality is more like a 9.2, still great, but it’s the atmosphere, the spaciousness, the rolling drums that seem to pan across the speakers, the great sound mix, all of it equals pure magic and a legitimate 9.5. Audience 8.7 - A somewhat slightly above average recording that thankfully remains very listenable and stable, there are some periods during the show where the tape improves maybe to an 8.8 but once your ears adjust and you settle in, at the end you will think it wasn’t bad at all. It is NOT muddy, in fact there’s very little tape hiss so this must emanate from a low gen tape or it has been worked on. When some songs go from quiet to loud (as they frequently do at a Pink Floyd concert), the tape machine seems to take a second to adjust, perhaps it has an automatic level adjuster, but despite those tiny momentary hiccups the tape is largely smooth sailing. Audience 9.3 - This is what I would call a definitive release in that I think if you wanted to know what Sabbath was in ’87 you can use this as a reference. For one thing, it sounds great – and another reason is because it sounds like the band is doing what it had in mind with the line-up and sound. A new direction maybe, but in the same way that maybe Technical Ecstasy was also a new direction. It’s still Sabbath, the bone structure is all there, but the smile has changed…and it has a place in the discography. FM Broadcast 9.8 - Just about as good as it can get, this captures the moment and freezes it forever in such granular detail that it feels like you are sitting right next to Dickie’s amp. It makes you appreciate his playing like never before. I mean, I play the guitar, but I have no concept of how you turn it into an extension of yourself to the degree that it is practically impossible to make even the slightest mistake. Not that his playing is perfection, it almost is, but just that he uses the instrument to convey so much feeling that it is impossible even to tell if he ever misses a note or phrases something wrong. Does that make sense? NOTE: The artwork shows disc two with only the last two tracks but the set has been tracked to include "Jessica" and "The Way Love Goes" on disc 2...so the artwork will not be changed to reflect the song order it just is what it is. Audience 8.8 - This is a well rounded recording that delivers most of what is required to ensure a show remains worthy of repeat listens. The only real limitations I could discern are a slight “noisiness” somewhere between the upper mid band and the high band frequencies that are more noticeable during cymbal crashes – and even then it’s minimal. Maybe another critical observation is the overall audio mix coming from the stage is not ideal, it’s not bad, but it’s not as guitar/vocal prominent as you might be used to, again even that is being overly critical because it’s also not that bad. This is a good tape that may not satisfy the perfectionists out there but will take care of the rest of us (me included!).
