• Audience 9.4 - Let me say straight away that this is a MUST for anyone who digs Steve Miller Band…and even if you don’t. This is fantastic! Great, and I mean GREAT live atmosphere that totally puts you in the moment. A real treat for the music enthusiast and collector – even the guys who swear they won’t listen to any audience tapes. Soundboard 9.7 - I love the way they recorded the vocals, it has a very cool quality to it, such that it lends that sort of electric spark to the proceedings. This is very energetic set by the band.
  • Soundboard 8.7 - Sounds like it comes from a video source, with some of that compression factor present. For such a major stadium act, there are surprisingly few tapes out there of him.
  • Fillmore East 1970 Soundboard 8.8 - Clear although not bristling with perfection is a very good early period SMB recording Honolulu 1970 Soundboard 8.8 - A tape that needs one song to dial in the live mix but then gets much better. Still, it’s very good but not sparkling and bright…just good enough to rank pretty high in the category of the formative Steve Miller anthology of concert tapes. San Rafael 1970 Soundboard 9.1 - This is a really nice recording that exemplifies why it is so cool to hear tapes of an artists’ earlier career works before they made it to the big time. This certainly shows the vulnerability and the possibility at the same time. An artist who is still not 100% convincing but clearly has the tool set necessary to advance…and advance he did! Soundboard 9.7 - A pre FM master was used and it clearly magnitudes better than what you’d get recording off the radio!
  • Pro Broadcast 9.3 - Excellent quality!
  • Audience 9.8 - Ethereal, intense, clear, atmospheric, and just about as good as your ears can perceive an audio recording to be. The sound mix is just spot on, and each instrument occupying it's own space just allows you to take a minute here and there to focus on whatever instrument you want...but always drawing back to Steve because let's face it he's a total badass. • Audience 9.6 - Exciting and full bodied, this is what I want from any recording from the modern era…there’s no excuse for a sub-par bootleg post 1980 in my opinion. PA’s were better, recording gear better (that may be subjective), but the point is it SHOULD sound great from 1991 and this does – and not only that but the band JAMS!

  • Studio and Live - Excellent source material used, especially the studio stuff. The June 10, 1979 performance is perhaps the weakest tape here but one can still hear all the action from the stage even if it sounds a little far back. Fans consider the Accolades set to be a classic piece, it’s easy to hear why.
  • Soundboard 9.4 - After the sound mix gets sorted out, and the vocals are brought up in the mix, this recording really takes off and blossoms beautifully. • CD One - Ft. Worth 1980 Audience 9.4 - This recording is hard to definitely call an audience tape because it’s either really close to the main P.A. without much audience interference but the best guess here is that the mic is placed right in from of the P.A. and because of that the sound is direct and electrifying. It’s a terrific recording actually. CD Two - Lubbock 1980 Audience 8.8 - This recording is very decent and inside a small venue so it gets a little raucous at times but overall it’s a nice, dirty little gem. • Soundboard 9.2 - A nice and tight sound with excellent presence and tone on guitar, clear up front vocals, and nice placement of bass and drums just off to one side and behind adding to the stereo effect.  Now, I may be mistaken about this being a board tape or not, for me the audience might be the clue here. I hear them in the background as if they were bleeding into an onstage or close mic from stage front. That being sad a competent and devoted taper may have made this capture and if that is true, that person should receive a medal of commendation! Not saying 100% certain, but it’s just too good and clean, and free of interference but who knows maybe it’s just a really astute taper?  All I know is that this material and this quality make for a real revelation for people like me who glossed over the albums. Damn good stuff, with a stellar cast of characters. Same with the San Francisco 1977 tape which I include in this rating but is a soundboard…similar stellar sound quality maybe 9.6 but has a little more hiss present. Still, it is EXCELLENT! • Radio Broadcast 8.7 - A little generation tape hiss but a good and clear, solid broadcast with excellent instrument sound separation. The band is a hybrid jazz/prog and rock with certain influence by Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, PFM, and Gentle Giant.
  • Audience 9.3 - This is a rock and roll show the way it used to be..and I mean WAY used to be!  So the experience is well worth checking out especially because this tape captured lightning in a bottle in a very good way.  Atmosphere combined with great sound you cannot go wrong here. • Audience 8.6 - It sounds like this tape has gone through a lot of mastering trying to find a way to mitigate it's flaws, and by some extent I would say it was successful...but at the cost of taking out some of the good aspects of the EQ. What I mean to say is that if they had not taken the effort, you would be listening to a lot of screechiness, it is evident that this tape had overloaded high end. Now that some of the offending frequencies have been removed, it is much more listenable and can actually be enjoyed once your ears settle in to the odd mix. Not one of the best, but neither is it garbage and the fact of the matter is that we don't have an abundance of tapes from Stryper's first tour. • Audience 8.2 - Kind of bass heavy and muddy mix, but its OK once your ears adjust.
  • Audience 9.0 - Great low end and high end signal! Rare to find both intact, you can turn this up loud.
  • Soundboard 9.6 - Superb recording that delights the senses in every way with precision attack. The distortion this band uses does not in any way mask imperfection as so many other bands use it for, in fact the band is unbelievably tight, and the mix highlights each of them in a very harmonious way but especially tantalizing is the bass sound and placement in the mix. You'd expect, and even almost prefer that the vocals be the star of the show but they are not particularly highlighted as good as they are. The guitar solos are breathtaking, and each player is panned to one side in a non-synthetic stereo sound-field giving the listener a sense of space, like natural surround sound. • FM Radio Broadcast 9.2 - Very enjoyable, and tape runs stable and clean so you can blast this at your next gathering of friends (which is soon, hopefully). The bonus material (Kansas City 78) is very good also, an audience recording with nice atmosphere. All of the material in this set is prime era Styx, for me anyway. • Audience 8.8 - A very clean, clear tape which to my ears only needs one thing – more “fatness” – but I found myself getting used to the more midrangey sound as I listened and then I realized it’s a very good recording that requires you to stick with it until it kind of normalizes. I mean, there’s bass here, and it’s actually somewhat detailed…that is what this tape offers more than anything is that each instrument is pretty distinct in this mix. That is what sucks you into the show and why I think it’s worth getting for the collection. Styx Ford Auditorium Detroit, MI 1976-11-29 01. Intro 02. Put Me On 03. Lorelei 04. Shooz 05. • Long Beach 1978 Audience 9.3 - This recording could easily pass as a KBFH radio broadcast it is very well done, but my only complaint is one that probably has nothing to do with the tape itself but rather the stage mix. If you are a guitar guy, you will want more guitars in the mix – that being said you are going to be getting breathtaking keyboards, vocals, and solid drums and a bass that is there holding it together but not booming or rumbling. All in all, this one is quite different than other bootleg tapes of the era, it has a professionalism to it that you won’t hear often. I say this is probably a must have for Styx collectors. Oakland 1978 Audience 8.4 - Sadly, what tries to be a very good recording just doesn’t quite reach that status due mainly to what I believe is the wrong style of microphone used. To my ears, it sounds like a condenser mic, and consequently the audio is bunched up into the middle frequency leaving indistinct instrument separation. That being said, it’s “trying” to be very good and in spots it really is – mainly during quieter passages where you can tell the taper did bring pretty good gear. Almost but not quite, but still qualifying as a good addition to a Styx fan’s collection (and great as a “bonus” concert in this set). • FM Broadcast 9.1 (Seattle)  and Audience 8.3 (Fresno) - Two very cool shows with the first one taking the cake for fidelity but the second one is a stomper. It is pretty clear with guitar being very good and loud (screaming in fact!) but not at the expense of everything else. It’s lacking maybe some lower end definition and separation of instruments during their jamming parts (might lose some of the drums in there, and keyboards are absent sometimes) but these are not going to bother you when you start listening to this gig because it’s a thriller. • Soundboard 8.6 - Starts off rough but quickly things improve and soon a really bright, vibrant tape emerges. Might be a touch too much high end here, but I interpret that to mean this must be a low gen source. Most everyone is going to dig this, add it to the collection for sure!
  • Audience 7.2 - A lot of work went into restoring the sound on these previously un-circulated recordings. History abounds, I mean, you have post-Cream Clapton jamming with Ginger Baker! Very rare, very cool. Oh, and by the way The Jeff Beck Group shreds!
  • Audience 8.5 - Everything very present, only faults are the loss of uppers and lower frequency response due to limitations of analog tape and time. You can add some EQ, although this does sound reasonably fine as it is but season to taste.
  • Pro radio broadcasts 8.8 some age showing but very clear.
  • Audience 8.8 - Fantastic capture that gives the sound a really spacey and breathing feel, like it is wrapping around your ears and not just coming straight at you.
  • Audience 8.8 - A surprisingly good tape here, with pretty much everything you require including really great atmosphere. The flaws have mainly to do with the ability of the equipment to supply bandwidth, which basically translates into depth or dynamics, which are present but maybe not to the degree you prefer.
