• Boston 1973 - Soundboard 9.7 - Professionally recorded for broadcast, as you can expect with a jazz rock combo the sound has to be extraordinary due to the nature of the musicianship and sound they each produce - in other words it is easier to manage the sound when it isn't over distorted and ear-splittingly loud. This is, as a result, a lovely sounding tape (during the quiet sections there is some minor tape noise in the background but it disappears as soon as the music starts). New York 1974 - Audience 9.0 - I had a hard time figuring out whether this was an aud or a soundboard because of the proximity of the vocals. I determined it had to be a semi-professional audience recording because of the crowd responses being pretty well picked up in the tape after songs...if it was a board tape that would not be as audible (if at all). But it could still easily pass as a board tape if you didn't take that into account - so is it a board tape? It is very good for this venue, Carnegie Hall acoustics did not lend themselves well to loud rock music, if this is indeed an audience tape they did a fantastic job!   • Audience 9.0 - This recording has a real vintage feel to it, like a fine antique it is a little brassy but nice and clear with enough dynamic to get a feel for the mood and the times.   • Audience 9.2 - One thing you get from a great audience tape that a soundboard can't reproduce is how the vocals actually sound. What I mean is that when a signal goes directly from mic to board, it's going to be nothing like what the vocalist will sound like to the audience. The PA system translates vocals to the ears the way the band wants it to sound like, and therefore a truer representation of the live sound that you go to a show to get.   • Audience 8.6 - A middle of the road tape that starts off rough as taper situates himself (and a rather rude bump occurs in the middle of Welcome To The Jungle) but do smooth out a few minutes in and gradually sounds somewhat better. A large venue sound complete with that telltale "verb" and slightly boomy, but one thing you get plenty of, and this is key, Slash. At the expense of Axl, you get a heaping dose of Slash and that is fine. Quieter numbers and interludes sound way much better than full tilt volume. I suggest exploring this one if you already collect the band's live shows and do not have this one yet - it's good, it's not great, but to the band's credit I have yet to hear them do a subpar performance and this show is pretty darn good.   • Audience 9.4 - This is a band that has attained the kind of status that warrants a serious examination of their live "bootleg" catalog. In particular, I think the years 1987 to 1992 are the important years, and any tapes that are listenable are considered collectible but the ones that are excellent, as this one is, should be sought out. Why? Because Guns 'N Roses was more than the sum of their parts, and the music that happened on stage more often than not seemed to hold that most elusive quality - Magic.   • Soundboard 9.0 -A somewhat confusing mix, almost as if a ghost is present in the board! Well what it actually is might not be that spooky at all, just the effects loop they use for what seems to be the kick drum, or drums in general. It's their signature, a background "noise" the resembles phasing, and gives the band a unique sound. Does it work for a soundboard tape is the question - and I think it can be slightly distracting but it's not used continuously. Other than that I think this is quite OK.   • Studio Quality 8.6-9.5 - I was not expecting this to be anywhere near this good. I kinda just assumed it would be a collection of 4th gen cassette tape garbled noise. It's far from noisy and garbled, it's actually DAMN good! Maybe two or three tracks out of the lot are a bit less clear and dynamic, but those are the minority here. All in all, this set rocks!   • Soundboard 9.4 - Clear and bold (especially percussion) capturing a very fine creative period of the band (the dual guitar with Neal Schon being especially notable). I did notice a slight amount of distortion in the lower frequencies but it's barely noticeable.   • Audience 8.7 - No other recordings strikes me the same way this one does. The best way to describe it is...it makes you feel like these sounds have travelled through a worm hole to reach us, having been hurtling through the past, space, time, to get to your ears again now. You hear the atmosphere of ancient Rome, the Pantheon, the theatre, the crowds, the GUITAR...echoing, then landing like a punch in the face. But, there's problems sometimes when travelling through time and space, you don't always come out completely intact as this old tape clearly shows. Does that mean it's bad? Quite contrary! I was mesmerized and listened to the whole thing. It's not great, it's not bad, it's not going to win any contests but it is UNIQUE and a blast to hear. I'm in Rome in 1972 at a Who concert and my seats are on Pete's side of the stage and I am getting my wish to be smothered by the delicious sounds of a Gibson SG in the hands of a maniac genius at full volume. How can you not want to know about this? It is well worth having.   • Audience 8.8 - I am SO relieved that the sound quality here is good, because for me I do not really collect Tom Petty recordings, I mean I like him fine but I just had way to much other stuff I needed to listen to...BUT if you pointed me to something different, I suppose I would take you up on it and so that is what this is. I must say, it's really interesting! Quality-wise it's really fine, and very immersive (yes, you know you are rubbing shoulders with a boatload of people) but I find it wasn't off-putting at all.   • London Audience 8.7 - A decent recording that remains consistent throughout. Everything comes through, albeit not with a lot of detailed anything, just good overall clarity and decent mix. I would commend the taper because I know he had to have battled with the Hammersmith Odeon acoustics, loud audience, louder band, and consumer grade gear and yet still managed a good capture. Brussels Audience 8.9 - This is a strong recording and finds the band performing at a very high level. Good sound balance, and though you get a sense of the sheer volume, it does not stress the tape.   • Audience 8.9 - One of the early efforts by Dan Lampinski to capture live music with good equipment. It's a decent job, you can tell clearly that the guy had a knack for it. The atmosphere he managed to get on tape was always very realistic and managed to remain unobtrusive even if it got loud. The balance here is really good with vocals where they should be, which is very up front, but drums sound fantastic here and the piano sounds perfectly mixed between the two. Guitars and vocals occupy essentially the same space in the mix, neither rising high enough to hog the bandwidth. The vocals do not appear up front in the mix, and low end is not highly defined although very present in a "feel" sense, the entirety of the sound can be roundly enjoyed though, as the relative clarity and presence of the band give this old tape credibility in the collector world.   • Audience 8.7 - Small club feel, and a good tape to learn what this band was about, since there's a strange sort of "Spinal Tap" mysticism about them that has endured. The old recording here sounds kind of dated, and there's a few occasional sonic oddities that pop up now and again (like gentle phasing) but thankfully these are short-lived. The tape here is not muddy or screechy, it is focused primarily on guitars and vocals in the mix, so season to taste with your EQ if you want to roll in some added low end.   • Soundboard 9.1 - A decent if slightly muted mix, although drums and vocals retain more of an animated feel about their sound. I like this period, it sounds very 1970's (as if Frank ever really sounded any different) but I am not greedy and I take any board tape I can get, this one is certainly worthy of the collection.
