Audience 9.0/9.2 - Two very good captures that convey a lot of information, most notably the popularity of the band at such an early stage of their careers, and that the Japanese used very high quality taping gear and knew instinctively how to stealth record a rock show. This is good for historical purposes in that these recordings always eventually take on much more significance with the passage of time. This is my argument for why artists should relax their stances against "bootlegging" because while your moment may be on the surface a commercial venture, in the long run it is a milestone not just for the artist in their career but in the overall culture and therefore should be, if possible, preserved. End of rant.

Audience 8.7 - This is a show that just came onto my radar, I can't believe I'd never heard it before. What I was expecting and what I got were two wildly different things...and I mean, it is a good thing. It's a good tape! It also happens to be the gig where the iconic photo of Ozzy lifting Randy was taken, and being able to now hear that show is kind of cool.OZZY OSBOURNE Rosemont Horizon Chicago, Illinois January 24th, 1982 *** "Diary of a Madman" tour *** 01. Soundboard 8.8 - This is a soundboard that is not without flaws, not serious flaws, but indeed somewhat noticeable ones. So, it’s one of those mixes where guitar sounds at times amazing, up front, and gloriously loud…and at others it seems like it was ran through an on-board processor of some kind and ends up more compressed and lower in the mix. Rock The Nation is cut at the tail end of Ronnie’s solo, and the drum intro for I Got The Fire begins, so that was a little bit of a jarring edit that could have been smoother. Overall this is a tape, and show, that will sit nicely in the collection seeing as how there are so few Gamma sdbrds, or live tapes at all.

Audience 9.0 - A strong recording from what sounds like the center row, maybe halfway back but not as diffuse as you might think for being in that spot. Yes, maybe the guitar and bass aren’t separated the way you would prefer, but this was the sound of Rush in 2015, and on this show it is Geddy’s vocals that receive the most prominence. Overall it’s a very good recording with atmosphere and power.

Audience 9.1 - What a find! This tape exudes raw power, and hearkens back to the original sound and style of the band much more so than what would be just a year and a half later. Does that mean it’s a raw blues rock show? No, but there is a lot of that here, and more than that it’s the TONE of the band. Gritty, mean, raw but tight…fierce! The quality of the tape is VERY good…well worth snagging!

Audience 9.3 - Excellent, clean, and good concert hall vibe on this one. It’s Japan, and the crowd has a penchant to clap during some songs but the recording mitigates it to the point you barely even notice. My guess is that the mics were raised over the crowd in order to achieve that.

Audience 8.9 - This is what I consider the best audience tape from the Somewhere In Time Tour. It’s got loads of atmosphere but not at the expense of the “directness” of the PA to the mic. It’s a realistic sound, this tape replicates exactly what your ears heard coming out of the PA at this show…without artifacts to detract. Get this!

Soundboard 9.8 - This is a new phenomenon in the modern era of bootlegs. The producers have taken the soundboard from this legendary show and given it an AI powered multi-band compression re-mastering and it’s night and day. Not only that but also a meticulous editing to present what SHOULD have been officially released to the public and if I were Jimmy, well, I would steal this and package it and sell it ha ha! It’s that good.

Audience 8.9 - A great effort here by the taper, it’s got a little bit of that “just about to break” quality, where the limits of the tape are just about reached…yet it holds together. Audience 8.5 (discs 1 & 2) FM Broadcast 8.7 - Well this is odd, you have an “in the pit” audience tape that actually delivers a good, fun trip because it is immersive despite not being a full bodied audio like you want – it is definitely worth it for the ride though…but that brings us to the FM broadcast of the show…how is it that I find myself enjoying the audience tape more? Yes the FM is cleaner and all, but it’s very limited and not quite like an AM broadcast but for goodness sake where’s the bass and drums? It’s clearly the Tony and Ian show here – I think someone ought to matrix these together because then you might have something. FM Broadcast 9.8 - Just about as good as it can get, this captures the moment and freezes it forever in such granular detail that it feels like you are sitting right next to Dickie’s amp. It makes you appreciate his playing like never before. I mean, I play the guitar, but I have no concept of how you turn it into an extension of yourself to the degree that it is practically impossible to make even the slightest mistake. Not that his playing is perfection, it almost is, but just that he uses the instrument to convey so much feeling that it is impossible even to tell if he ever misses a note or phrases something wrong. Does that make sense? NOTE: The artwork shows disc two with only the last two tracks but the set has been tracked to include "Jessica" and "The Way Love Goes" on disc 2...so the artwork will not be changed to reflect the song order it just is what it is. SDBRD 9.8 - Fantastic upgrade to what was already a super good tape. Why is it so much better? Transferring off a newly discovered pre-broadcast master, you really can get all the ambience, the background, the crisper highs and deeper lows…all of this adds up to something really special. Hammersmith 1977 Audience 8.5 Not bad for a ’77 aud. but it doesn’t open up much, stays within a bandwidth that allows you to hear everything on stage but with mostly guitar and bass, with Ozzy singing rising over it all. Drums are somewhat buried the snare comes through OK The more I listen to the more I adjust and like it, like the rating indicates this isn’t terrible seeing as how there are few really stellar ’77 tapes. 6-10-78 Audience 8.4 This tape does not rise above what seems at first a noisiness, where you don’t get a good separation of instruments and a frequency that favors upper mid and highs, but thankfully not annoyingly so. I would say that you might still endure it all the way through regardless because while I was not blown away, I also wasn’t offended. It’s average, but not garbage bin material. 6-19-78 Audience 9.0 The best of the Hammersmith set for sure. It’s pretty clear and has good separation of instruments. I did find it leans more to treble tone, but you can add bass and not destroy this at all…so there’s a lot to like about this show. Audience 9.7 - both of these shows were recorded onto a 4-track machine which is clearly obvious when you hear just how crystal this stuff sounds, as well as the separation of instruments. Grand Funk Railroad Hawaii 1971 - Soundboard 9.1 A scarcity of prime era recordings mandate that anyone remotely interested in this band pursue any and all recordings that are A. Soundboard and/or B. decent audience for the simple reason that this band kicked ass. This is a true rarity – a soundboard and, yes, it kicks major ass. Grand Funk Railroad Boston 1971 Audience 8.7 - A very good tape surfaces and you can actually hear everything pretty clearly. This band played very loud (as did any self-respecting heavy rock band of the early 70’s) and consequently unless you smuggled in superior quality machinery you weren’t likely to be able to capture this sound with any clarity. This taper had better than average gear it seems, and even though it’s still somewhat distant from the stage, it is a tape that allows the listener to experience an entire show without struggling too hard to make out what is going on. Audience 8.8 - A really good tape with a loud and phat bottom end that is probably not that unlike what the actual sound would have been at the show. Audience 9.0 - This recording, while captured from the wilds of the audience, is very deep, full-bodied and pleasing to the ears. You will have to deal with the fans, but they aren’t ruining this capture they are just present. I liked this one a lot, I listened all the way through in fact. Audience 9.2 - A lovely, spacious, almost elegant recording even though it is originating somewhere in the middle I would guess. The sound feels slightly above you, but it’s warm and pleasant. The only knock is that taper missed a little of a couple of songs due to hassles from security. I can forgive that, at least they didn’t seize his gear. Good job taper! Pro Recording 9.1 - The engineers for this live recording opted to not close mic so you have a live recording with lots of atmosphere and probably sounding truer to the actual event than a pure soundboard. The bass is well recorded here, normally you’d expect the sound mix to favor only guitar as that is what the fans are wanting most – but here the mix is rather democratic. Good job! Audience 8.8 - This is NOT the Monsters of Rock show, it’s actually the last DLR (classic era) show and it’s pretty good! It’s not super close up or terribly far from stage, seems to be in a nice spot and everything is clear with decent dynamics. Now, it’s a recording from a rowdy crowd but even with that I felt they did not ruin this or intrude unnecessarily – in fact it seemed they wanted to listen to the band and not hold conversations or stupid hooting and whistling during songs. Stockholm 1983 Audience 8.9 - This tape starts off kind of average and slowly but surely keeps getting better until what we have is a very good tape of a really good show. As most already know, any good tape of this line up is VERY welcome as it showcases what I consider a great band – I did not say a great Black Sabbath because you can’t get away from Ian’s obvious vocal inflections that inevitably recall his old band. That being said if you listen to this without that bias you realize how good this BAND was in 1983. Paris 1983 Soundboard 9.1 - A most welcomed thing amongst Black Sabbath collectors without question is this board tape with the Ian Gillan line up. I love the material they recorded on Born Again, this is almost the logical progression from Technical Ecstasy, to me anyway. The music is more ideally suited to Ian Gillan’s vocals than it would have been to Ronnie James Dio and I think that is obvious. Black Sabbath Quebec City 1983 Audience 8.9 - I like this tape because you really get to hear and appreciate what the bass is all about in Sabbath and it is here in excellent detail. Everyone shines, it’s great to have this abundance of riches because this short-lived period of Black Sabbath is certainly one of the most unique sounding. Soundboard 9.2 - I think this right here is as good as it will get to a complete Tommy Bolin Purple gig in soundboard quality and, here’s the important thing, reasonably cohesive playing. To be honest, after listening to this, it’s kind of apparent that Deep Purple was probably not the best vehicle for Tommy’s talents. Not that he can’t play, but that Deep Purple’s music was too one dimensional. That being said it is still pretty good despite the erratic mix – sometimes guitar is up front and sometimes it is buried. All in all I think I can say this show will be a revelation for Purple and Bolin fans. Deep Purple Springfield Civic Center Springfield, MA. 26th January 1976 Disc 1 1. Intro 2. Burn 3. Lady Luck 4. Audience 9.3 - Legendary Mike “The Mic” Millard recording and what a sparkling one it is. It’s hard to place Yes’s music into any sort of time frame because it is timeless, therefore a good 1991 show is just as “good” as a 1971 show, meaning as you listen you realize there’s no real difference in that the 1991 show might as well be the band during any time frame because it’s just as good. Sale! This set was assembled with both the hardcore collector and casual collector in mind. The variety of material that will appeal to longtime Yes collectors is the immediate standout feature, aside from the beautiful design of the canister itself. Now, let this be the one and only disclaimer: The inclusion of the Dallas 1972 show, even though it may be considered below the high standards set by collectors of this venerable progressive rock band, was too important to not acknowledge here because, as you know, we lost Alan White not that long ago and the Dallas '72 gig was his first with the band. It's also kind of interesting to hear how well he did with only a couple of days to learn the challenging material. The rest of the set is an excellent combination of stuff guaranteed to keep you interested throughout the entire set. Highlights include the new to circulation Providence 1976 which is an excellent sounding tape, and the demos/alternates from Time And A Word. Audience 9.3 - The second this begins you know it’s gonna be great, and it’s better than great. I’ve heard radio broadcasts that don’t sound as nice as this. I need atmosphere, I want to feel the space around me, the venue itself is a part of the event. Audience tapes of high quality can sometimes deliver more atmosphere than the best soundboard, and sometimes it’s necessary if you want to relive an event to have that atmosphere included in the recording.
