In fact, it’s actually several performances, where they just took the best of each show and broadcast it. I am fine with it! It’s great man. • Four Discs of music that will melt your brain. All are either Very Good or Excellent quality, so it’s not a jarring experience to sit through all four discs, they have a certain continuity to them. I think this is a great time period of music and these guys were just on another level.  It’s a fun thing to ponder, whether there are any bands that can do this sort of thing today – and the answer is “I really don’t think so”. • Various Sources 9.0 - I give this a high rating for many reasons, as it can be easily assumed that the sound quality will vary being a compilation. The producers were smart to put it together this way, I found it to play much like a legitimate record company release. The worst of the recordings is in itself not even that bad, in the context you are hearing it in, it takes on new significance. I myself did not realize how few times some of these songs were played live, so having a collection like this makes sense. I enjoyed it immensely. So will you. • Audience 8.6 – 8.8  - All of the recordings here are good to very good audience recordings made on obviously portable tape recorders with limited capacity to hold the bandwidth needed for a loud, intense rock group. That being said, the tapes have gone through processing that allows more music information to come through, less tape hiss and background gunk, so you get to actually hear and decipher well what can only be described as groundbreaking experimental rock/jazz/prog by the band that wrote the book on it. Amazing power and finesse on display, and to reiterate my point on sound quality – this collection of live KC is still fundamentally indispensable to any self-proclaimed prog rock aficionado. • Milwaukee 1980 FM Broadcast 8.7 - This was broadcast, the question is, was it recorded professionally and did it sound like this when it was aired?  Probably it did not sound like this – because this is below the threshold for what is acceptable for a legitimately broadcast live performance which means it is probably an off-air tape that has suffered from degradation. That being said, it’s been re-mastered and it sounds decent enough to be included in a set which features all soundboards so that says something for it. Vancouver 1981 FM Broadcast 8.8 - This is another one of those not quite living up to radio broadcast expectations probably due to a capture off the air onto cassette tape, regardless it still sounds fine just a bit dated. A re-mastering helped considerably and that is why the show is included in this set. Dortmund 1982 Soundboard 9.1 - Sounds like a large, open air stadium and that atmosphere is preserved onto the tape. A really decent one for the collectors out there. Daytona 1984 Soundboard 9.2 - Wow, the 80’s, and the unique obsession with that (now very dated) certain drum sound that can take any song and make it “new wave” ha ha!  Thankfully it’s not the case on every song otherwise I would have said skip this show, but it’s a good, well recorded one so enjoy it. Raleigh 1985 Soundboard 9.4 - Good hard panning of the guitars so that you can distinctly hear each of them as autonomous instruments. A hard rocking sound was mixed on this evening. • Delaware 1985 Soundboard 9.3 Nice to hear this period of Trower with a good, punchy board tape that does present a minimal amount of hiss (evident between songs) but other than that not much to complain about. W. Hollywood 1990 Soundboard 9.2 Technically speaking this would rate much higher as it is what one would call a “pristine” board tape. Yes it sounds crystal clear and Robin is literally singing in your ear (a bit much perhaps), but the rating reflects what I personally consider to be a downside of board tapes…the lack of atmosphere and reliance on perfect mix. This was probably mixed for the benefit of what was coming from the stage and not for the sake of the recording being made. It’s a reference tape is what it is. Contrast this to the next show in the set and you’ll begin to understand why I always say a great audience tape beats a board tape. Karlsruhe 2009 Audience 9.5 This show gets a stellar rating because while it is not technically a superior recording (mainly due to the very slight amount of overdrive) it represents most of what I love about great audience recordings. This recording captures the lightning into a bottle so to speak. The fact that there is just a slight bit of overdriven energy (for lack of a more technical term) or lets call it “saturation” for the sake of the audiophiles out there – either way the point is that this recording will get more repeat plays than the board tapes in this set. • Hammersmith 1977 Audience 8.5 Not bad for a ’77 aud. but it doesn’t open up much, stays within a bandwidth that allows you to hear everything on stage but with mostly guitar and bass, with Ozzy singing rising over it all. Drums are somewhat buried the snare comes through OK  The more I listen to the more I adjust and like it, like the rating indicates this isn’t terrible seeing as how there are few really stellar ’77 tapes. 6-10-78 Audience 8.4 This tape does not rise above what seems at first a noisiness, where you don’t get a good separation of instruments and a frequency that favors upper mid and highs, but thankfully not annoyingly so. I would say that you might still endure it all the way through regardless because while I was not blown away, I also wasn’t offended. It’s average, but not garbage bin material. 6-19-78 Audience 9.0 The best of the Hammersmith set for sure. It’s pretty clear and has good separation of instruments. I did find it leans more to treble tone, but you can add bass and not destroy this at all…so there’s a lot to like about this show. • Audience 8.8/9.1 - Two pretty good recordings with the second evening (July 4th) having the benefit of much more high end definition and overall clarity, with soaring headroom that makes for a generally relaxing listen, so you’ll tend to favor it more but that is not saying July 3rd is bad, it’s actually also very decent just not as clear and defined as the 4th. • Disc 1 Audience 8.7 - Surprisingly decent effort capturing a rarely recorded Borneo Band in what sounds like a small club. Disc 2 Soundboard 8.7 - A tape showing age, but of decent enough quality that you can dive in and enjoy this rare recording. • Soundboard 9.2 - Again we find Lou and company blazing his way across Europe and leaning on some old, and some new…but mostly older tunes which always work well because there is so much room for the band to stretch out. • Stuttgart 1970 Audience 9.1 - A sometimes startling tape in that in certain sections of the performance you could swear the effects are swirling right over your head. A clear (with a little hiss but not a bother) and highly enjoyable tape! Saarbrucken 1970 Audience 9.3 - A tape that has tremendous depth, really if you play it loud you can imagine you are there. • Audience 9.0 - This is a heroic taping accomplishment, to be able to get virtually all of the performers in really nice quality, it’s an effort to be admired. While lacking super-definition, it does have good dynamics and clarity overall, it’s not thin, and it is not muddy. It’s pretty darn good! • Miami 2019 Audience 8.8 - Tremendous atmosphere while retaining good and clear sound. It’s understandable being that the band plays enormous stadiums that you may have problems getting a solid capture, but provided that you aren’t in the nose bleeds, and your gear is decent, you can really get something worthwhile on tape with PA systems being so good. This is one such job. Charlie’s last gig with The Stones, and thankfully a good capture of the event. St. Louis 2021 Audience 9.2 - This one is right in the pocket!  Solid low end, with some genuine gut punching drums and bass without being boomy at all.  Vocals, nicely positioned in the mix, and both guitars are clear.  Really I have to say this is a joy to listen to and doesn’t have to be a soundboard to qualify. • Los Angeles 1975 - Soundboard 9.5 Offenburg 1977 Audience 8.9 - A very strong tape for sure. Clear, and pretty dynamic with great bass, and deep drums with guitars very tuneful and nicely placed in the overall mix. Lovely. Buffalo 1977 Audience 8.6 - The recording here is pretty clear, it definitely does lean towards the upper mid and highs but there thankfully is enough bottom to keep it from being irritating. Your ears do adjust quickly, and at some point you begin to notice it is actually very decent…think of it as maybe a superb AM radio broadcast (it isn’t, but it sounds like it could have been). Boston 1978 Audience 8.8 - It is apparent that very good gear recorded this show, the sound is warm and rounded, not a jagged, raucous tape like a lot of the amateur recordings can turn out to be. The live mix sound is good too, and the live mix is spot on. I think this tape offers a lot and you’ll probably give it multiple spins…especially after you hear Schenker just RIPPING on guitar. • SDBRD/AUD Disc 1 SDBRD 9.2 excellent material that features some later (’78) performances but seems mostly to be 1974. Unfortunately the tapes were not adequately annotated. Disc 2 Audience 8.8 A very decent tape that has a great live energy to it. I almost prefer this over the board tape, it just captures more of the mania happening on stage at a SAHB concert.  Disc 3 Audience 8.5 The recording seems to emanate from a more distant point from the stage and as such lacks the power and punch your ears crave, but it is not a muddy recording, you can hear the band well enough, just not much in the way of dynamics or power.
