Audience 8.2 - Not one of the better ones, it lacks clarity (drums are actually pretty clear though, and the vocals do rise above somewhat) and to these ears, I gotta say, this is the closest I have ever heard Boston sounding like a heavy metal concert. The lack of sonic clarity does not mean you can’t tell they were f’ing loud! Boston Wings Stadium, Kalamazoo, MI December 12, 1976 01 Intro 02 Rock-n-Roll Band 03 Shattered Images 04 More Than A Feeling 05 Peace of Mind 06 Something About You 07 Man I'll Never Be 08 Smokin' - Foreplay Band line-up Brad Delp - lead vocals, guitar (died March 9, 2007, aged 56) Sib Hashian - drums, backing vocals (died March 22, 2017, aged 67) Tom Scholz - guitars, organ Barry Goudreau - guitars Fran Sheehan - bass, backing vocals

Sale!Audience 8.8 - This recording was made with obviously good gear, the sound on occasion will lead you to believe it is a pro-job but it really isn’t. What may give it away is the slightly buried guitars, and I mean slightly. The vocals are soaring and direct at the same time – just lovely. Good band, good recording, the magical 1970’s.
-
Audience 8.7 - This is an ass-kicker of a show, really huge sound and larger performance…completely over the top. The hall effect is present but taper is close enough to the mains to mitigate much of that. There is an underlying “noisiness” in the tape which gets lost on the shuffle anyway once the band is cooking…and man do they cook! Audience 8.2/8.6 - The recording starts out borderline, probably due to taper position…but hang in there because midway through the 4th song it improves and becomes a more interesting document because of it, First of all, it’s literally Bob Seger in the peak of his powers with a handful of chart toppers to display proudly. Normally that would not move me, but Bob Seger is old school, he delivers the goods even if his songs are considered “mainstream”, I mean, its good rock and roll no matter what. I love this document for many reasons. Soundboard 9.5 - A professional recording that has a real 1974 mix – sound engineers might understand what I am saying. Naw, I mean, it’s super clean and tight but it also has a certain kind of “dated” sound, and it really feels like a small venue to me…but these are PLUS marks! It’s for those reasons I love it. Soundboard 9.5 - Somewhat controversial, this tour declared to the world that Bob Dylan would not be owned by a corporation, a label, any entity of this earth…so yeah, when you have something to prove you come out swinging. This stuff is actually some of his best stuff, even if there’s that unmistakable gospel and soul influence, it’s still very much Bob Dylan music. Excellent sound, but if I had to be hyper critical of anything it would be my own personal desire for louder lead guitars.

Various Sources 8.5/10 - So this is, as the title suggests, a collection of recordings made during this tour but the kicker is that the songs are all ones that were one-off’s (with a couple of exceptions). I found that even the worst track (the final track in the set) was not as bad as they made it seem in the liner notes. Still, when compared to some of the truly outstanding ones in the set, yes maybe it really paled in comparison but there’s only two “marginal” tracks here and they aren’t totally abhorrent. This was a very interesting listen for me personally. Pro Audience 9.3 - What is a pro audience recording exactly? This right here. In other words it was set up from the start to be done to the highest standards. These concerts were highly promoted and a lot of media exists including paper goods, photographs, and yes, recordings. This also includes the pre-show gospel songs (disc 3). Personally, I rather enjoy Bob’s “religious” period as I find the songs and performances on a very high level and his singing is the best of his career (imho). Soundboard 9.4 - First of all, this is a guitar fest, and definitely seems a harder rockin’ affair than what one might expect…notwithstanding the more acoustic songs…those seem to rock too! I suppose that is what happens when you have guys like Mick Taylor and Ian MacLagen in the band!

When I saw them in Houston on this tour, being in a live hall (Houston Music Hall) and the loudness and everything else I was not aware how much GE Smith (yes, the guy with the 1001 goofy guitar faces) contributed. Audience 9.2 - Very nice job by taper to capture a show on good gear that allows the listener to feel a part of the experience – yes there’s some hoots and hollers but you won’t be annoyed, you will kind of agree and maybe do the same. The recording is close and bright with amazing atmospherics.

Soundboard 9.3 - This entire set is wonderful. Personally I find this era to be my favorite simply because it’s a snapshot of an iconic artist really exploring the depths of his emotions, talent, creativity, and wisdom. Audience 9.0 - This is a pretty famous recording of the full on assault of the Rolling Thunder Revue in all its glory. A good, clear tape with a tiny touch of tape saturation due to the taper being so close but it’s great nonetheless. It’s not distorted in that sense, it’s just a strong sound coming at you which actually benefits the experience because you feel the energy of the event in a visceral way. Great stuff! Audience 9.1 - God bless the tapers for this one! What a great show it is, and really I can’t recommend it highly enough because it’s TOTALLY immersive, I mean, sure it’s not 100% perfect but in a way it’s as good as you would hope. It’s a fun experience to hear this man just at the top of his game like this with a band that doesn’t miss a thing, ever. Studio Quality 9.3 - Very slight hiss but otherwise super-duper. Definitely this is fly-on-the-wall type stuff, with banter intact. Very insightful, and kind of gives me more of an appreciation for an overlooked album. Soundboard 9.0 - This is a newly discovered tape, and it is a solid board that does bear some signs of age. It sounds, hmmm, a little dated, faded, and there is a small amount of tape hiss present. These flaws do NOT affect the music though, because typically when you have these kinds of issues they tend to clear up during the musical performance (with those few exceptions during very quiet parts). But yeah, it’s not a sparkling tape but it gets the job done nicely enough. The bonus material on this set is similar to the Austin tape in every respect sound-wise. Audience 9.0/Soundboard 9.6 - Both are excellent sources and both performances are excellent. Radio Broadcast 8.7 - This is one of the toughest tapes to review because I don’t know what it is, literally I don’t know how they captured this to tape. To my ears it sounds like it was broadcast over the air and someone placed a microphone in front of their stereo speaker and recorded it. Either that or maybe it was broadcast over AM, I just can’t tell you but for sure it’s not as good as a radio broadcast should be, not is it as bad as an amateur audience recording, this one hovers somewhere in between but I still thought it was decent. Someone definitely re-mastered this, and I am 100% sure it was a major benefit.
