• Audience 9.4 - I really found this to be a real gem. First, I think it starts with a respectful but enthusiastic Japananese audience and then because of the immaculate source tape. The recording, while maybe light on bottom end just a touch, is crisp and clean and features a flawless midrange. Drums have an extremely "live" feel, you almost just kind of look off to your left and right to make sure a drummer isn't there in your living room!

  • Audience 8.7 - An excellent 8.7 too! First off let me just say how blown away I am to find a long lost 1978 recording previously un-circulated and in such great shape! Wow man, this is a fantastic find. The sound is pretty beefy for what sounds like an old tape deck, normally you'd expect something either thin as hell or muddy as crap but it's neither. It lacks a little clarity, but it's maybe near the drums and I can tell you guitar sounds clear (maybe a little thin but bass is pretty solid so it picks up the guitar sound a bit) and Ozzy is situated in the middle and can be heard pretty well. A solid tape that will fit nicely in with your collection.

  • Pro 9.5/Aud. 8.8/Aud.9.4 - The main attraction I would say is the Nokia 09 show which is fantastic audience tape with lots of brightness, atmosphere, and enough punch to really elevate the listening experience. The Disc 1 LA main set is also great, and of course the highlight for me being his flawless rendition of Spanish Castle Magic. The Tonight Show tracks are obviously pro recordings and are nice to have since it was so long ago who keeps up with it anymore? A great title for the collection!

  • Studio Quality 9.5 - This 2CD set compiles some of the best uncirculating or hard to find Badfinger demos and studio outtakes. Many other worthy tracks were excluded since they already appear in excellent quality on other collections. (ie. Apple Demos 1970-1972 and Complete Ass). Highlights include a 'new' version of Coppertoone Blues, the speed corrected demo of Without You (I Can't Live), the first appearence on CD of an alternate 'piano version' of Do You Mind and the rough mixes of several tracks from their classic Apple-era. In addition the original mix of the 1974 'Head First' album taken from cassette obtained directly from Mike Gibbins in the late 90's. These 1974 mixes are different from the 2000 Snapper CD mixes and are a major upgrade from other circulating copies.

  • Audience 9.4 - Excellent sound and atmosphere, enough audience participation near the taper to remind you that you're part of a live concert but not enough to interfere which in my estimation is what lends a missing element to most sdbrd tapes. I'd officially release this if I was the band.

  • Audience 8.7 - While this tape may not enjoy the same clarity as some of the Japan 82 recordings, it does have a good powerful delivery nonetheless. Vocals come through the clearest, but the combination of bass, and guitars follows with the force of a piledriver to your skull...and I rather like it. The bonus here is the inclusion of the set by the band The Rods, and having never heard of any live tapes of them before, it was a most welcome addition to this great vintage Iron Maiden set.

  • Audience 9.2 - Here we have a real treat for those who now realize what we had in our youths with the "Seattle Sound" as epitomized by Soundgarden, a sound that fit the times very appropriately. Now for the kicker: This show not only sounds great but has plenty of fun moments with Chris Cornell and the audience (I think he's a bit toasty on the potent German suds). What I liked most is the live sound here is mixed well for the guitars especially, only Chris gets a bit drowned out during the extreme volume heavier parts but overall it's hitting the sweet spot, at least for me.

  • Audience 9.0 - A big sound here, and I mean it can be asbig as you want because there's just enough headroom here to add volume without fear of too much of any one thing to take away from other frequencies. It's an even sounding mix, with maybe just a little more emphasis on the massive bass/guitar attack. But even then, you still get all the vocals and drums you need...its a well rounded recording giving you sense of venue as one more benefit that comes with audience recordings.

  • Audience 9.0/9.2 - Two very good captures that convey a lot of information, most notably the popularity of the band at such an early stage of their careers, and that the Japanese used very high quality taping gear and knew instinctively how to stealth record a rock show. This is good for historical purposes in that these recordings always eventually take on much more significance with the passage of time. This is my argument for why artists should relax their stances against "bootlegging" because while your moment may be on the surface a commercial venture, in the long run it is a milestone not just for the artist in their career but in the overall culture and therefore should be, if possible, preserved. End of rant.

  • SDBRD 9.2/Audience 8.8 - Two sources comprise this offering, with the first (and thankfully the bulk of the recording) being very good quality, I would say excellent more precisely. Being a soundboard it does come off a little on the dry side, and by contrast the audience taped portion (the last 1/3 of the show) is very good, and lively, which wakes up certain instruments giving them more accuracy as far as what they actually sounded like coming through the at the show. The guitar in particular has a different attack and dynamic from the audience tape, in a good way. This is almost the perfect example of what kind of differences there are, both positive and negative, between a board and an audience tape source.

  • Audience 9.3 - The secret to making a lifelike stealth recording is knowing what kind of microphone to use and how to operate peak level control meters. If you master those two aspects, the rest comes down to location inside the venue and physical handling of the gear. In this case, every element is handled appropriately with excellent results. • Audience 9.4 - Having listened very critically to this performance, I offer the following conclusion: BRILLIANCE. Simply put, this is a mature John McLaughlin leading an ensemble through a series of confident, muscular, thought-provoking pieces of jazz-rock music that goes into many more places than the old band ever did. Does that mean it's all fire and speed? No, it's really not, although there are places where it is appropriate and the band goes there...with the utmost confidence. Bravo to John McLaughlin for knowing the strengths of his band and really allowing all of them to shine. Very mature and a positive outcome was the result. Great recording too! Once he gets his mix right, it's off to the raises and one heck of a winning ticket. • Soundboard 9.6 - Superb recording that delights the senses in every way with precision attack. The distortion this band uses does not in any way mask imperfection as so many other bands use it for, in fact the band is unbelievably tight, and the mix highlights each of them in a very harmonious way but especially tantalizing is the bass sound and placement in the mix. You'd expect, and even almost prefer that the vocals be the star of the show but they are not particularly highlighted as good as they are. The guitar solos are breathtaking, and each player is panned to one side in a non-synthetic stereo sound-field giving the listener a sense of space, like natural surround sound. • Audience 9.7 - Spectacular, crystal clear and lush sound makes you sink deeply into this one. For some, the Grateful Dead are not easily understood, but this show and this recording can easily be understood as beautiful music played with passion and talent galore. Now, to be honest, this set is missing an important segment, the "space/drums" part is conspicuously absent, but there is still plenty of lengthy workouts to keep you engaged with the psychedelic overtones of a Dead concert as well as the more bluegrass and bluesy numbers. • Soundboard 9.4 - Great recording that gives you stunning detail and clarity with guitar, but here the bass sounds round and brassy and complements the guitar sound. In this mix, drums are also very tight, and the fact that the keyboards are panned to one side while guitar occupies the other really allows for an amazing separation of instruments, cohesive because it is expertly mixed but enough room between to allow the ears to focus on any one particular instrument (but I bet you'll not be able to block Ritchie out because he's living up to all the hype and then some in this one). • Audience 8.7 - Better than average, the tape has dynamics to it and even if vocals sound somewhat distant, the bass and guitar have a nice attack with the low end having that chest pounding quality which adds a lot to the electrifying atmospherics. Rory is particularly savage, playing what is probably a really wild crowd since it is where he is from. The performance is worth the entrance fee, the sound quality is good enough to warrant extended engagement. Full disclosure: There is some tape hiss present although it only becomes obvious when the band is not playing. • Audience 9.2 - The first thing that hit me with this recording is the lovely feel of it, silky and round with a solid "thwack" of the kick drum to make you remember what it's like to stand in front of the mains at a stadium rock show. A fine recording that belongs in every Bowie fan's collection. • Audience 9.0 - The only thing keeping this from attaining legendary status is the slight distortion present in a very specific middle to upper band in the frequency range. It's not a deal-breaker, it's in a place where you still get all the richness of the low end and the detail in the high end. The taper obviously used very good gear, so maybe the microphone he used and the location in the venue perhaps limited the recording in a way, because this is still a damn good tape but could have been a bona-fide must have. • Studio Quality 9.8 - Fantastic insight into the working progress of a masterpiece album. One thing that stood out for me was listening to the drums, they aren't exactly going to be the biggest takeaway when considering the performance as a whole but when they are dissected and highlighted you really understand the craft that goes into it. Let's put it this way - the drums aren't just being banged upon, they are being played. • Audience 9.7 - For me, this right here encapsulates the 70's for me growing up. When I first discovered rock and roll, the radio was on repeat with the Frampton Comes Alive! album, and everyone in the neighborhood had a copy. I had it on 8 track. This live recording is the bomb, just a wonderful document of a great moment in 70's rock music history. I love the atmosphere too, everything about this actually does "come alive" and for that it deserves the high rating. • Soundboard 9.3 - What you would expect from a direct to tape from the mixing console recording. It's super clear and clean and every instrument in a place where it's easily distinguishable, but don't assume it's just a dry, lifeless thing 'cause it ain't. It's not mixed for a release of any kind, but as a reference, so there's nothing to tame the Wildman when he's on the microphone - and that's the life of the party right there. • Pro Audience 9.1 - More than likely this was recorded for broadcast, but it's not a soundboard, or, perhaps it is a close/distance mic'd job because it is definitely not from the audience. It's probably a stage mic placement, that is about all I can decipher because while it is not quite up to prime time for a pristine radio broadcast, it is the next best thing in that you get more atmospherics than a straight board recording. • Audience 9.4 - A delightful and warm atmosphere highlight this bright and well mixed concert recording. I struggled to find any reason to criticize it, but there are some occasional voices behind taper, and that is REALLY nitpicky. So, this is certainly a treasure of a recording and I highly recommend it. • Audience 9.4 - Bright, lively, well-positioned recording that doesn't leave anything out. If anything, I would have preferred even more lower end, that being said the bass itself is detailed and clear. I also, maybe, would have equalized just a little more of the mid band and highs, rolling off them just a touch but this is a GREAT problem to have for an analog tape recording. Putting high end into the spectrum is way much harder to do than removing it. Again though, this is just seasoning to taste and the listener may find it perfect - which technically speaking I admit the frequency range is extremely intact here. • Audience 9.0 - I have to say this is a very good recording if your preference is to really be able to make out the vocals and to hear every nuance of the lead guitar possible. In fact, the sonics tend to favor the upper mid-range and highs, to the extent that I was not enthusiastic about the sound of the snare drum here...but that just shows you how articulate that range is. Is it screechy then? No, it's not that this is chirpy or screechy high at all, but one may want to play with the EQ to bring up more low end maybe...because to my ears that is what it needs. Otherwise, again, this is a VERY clear, articulate (especially upper mid and highs) recording. Black Sabbath Mid-Hudson Civic Center Poughkeepsie,NY. USA 31 May 1989 Disc 1 101. • Audience 8.7 - Sometimes a recording that may not be rated in the 9's might be passed over out of hand by picky collectors. That would be a huge mistake in this case. These are both unbelievably cool in a variety of ways - and the sound quality is not even an issue. The audio is fine for a super loud British metal band that comes to Texas and plays smallish venues - you can hear everything clearly. I would say that you might not get the wide spectrum, the sound is going to be focused on the middle range of instruments which gives you good guitar/vocal action at the expense of maybe the kick drum, and definition of bass, so who cares? It's not a deal-breaker at all because once you start listening you soon realize how kick ass these shows are. This is the stuff man!  NOTE:  Both of these shows have different dates than the single CD releases found on this site. You won't be duplicating anything, they are different dates for both the San Antonio and Kileen gigs. • Audience 8.8 - This is one of those kind of tapes that sound realistic. That doesn't mean to say it sounds lifelike, because your ears hear in hi-fidelity and detect all the nuance (as long as the volume isn't earsplittingly loud). • Audience 8.6 - It sounds like this tape has gone through a lot of mastering trying to find a way to mitigate it's flaws, and by some extent I would say it was successful...but at the cost of taking out some of the good aspects of the EQ. What I mean to say is that if they had not taken the effort, you would be listening to a lot of screechiness, it is evident that this tape had overloaded high end. Now that some of the offending frequencies have been removed, it is much more listenable and can actually be enjoyed once your ears settle in to the odd mix. Not one of the best, but neither is it garbage and the fact of the matter is that we don't have an abundance of tapes from Stryper's first tour. This set list is also great, so I forgive the imperfections and applaud the mastering efforts. STRYPER Anaheim Convention Center Anaheim, California 3.15.85 Disc 1 01. intro 02. Loud 'N' Clear 03. • Audience 8.7 - Small club feel, and a good tape to learn what this band was about, since there's a strange sort of "Spinal Tap" mysticism about them that has endured. The old recording here sounds kind of dated, and there's a few occasional sonic oddities that pop up now and again (like gentle phasing) but thankfully these are short-lived. The tape here is not muddy or screechy, it is focused primarily on guitars and vocals in the mix, so season to taste with your EQ if you want to roll in some added low end. It is a very good tape and fun to listen to. ANVIL Golden Mask Bar Arvida,Quebec, CAN. 1981 Disc 1 01. School Love 02. Steamin' 03. 666 04. Flyin' Cryin' 05. I Want You Both (With Me) 06. The vocals do not appear up front in the mix, and low end is not highly defined although very present in a "feel" sense, the entirety of the sound can be roundly enjoyed though, as the relative clarity and presence of the band give this old tape credibility in the collector world.
