Soundboard 9.4 - After the sound mix gets sorted out, and the vocals are brought up in the mix, this recording really takes off and blossoms beautifully. Audience 8.8 - This here is a very nice tape! It also shows the band firing on all four cylinders (yes, I am afraid this is only a 4 banger but this engine puts out more horsepower than a 12 cylinder Lambo!). London Audience 8.7 - A decent recording that remains consistent throughout. Everything comes through, albeit not with a lot of detailed anything, just good overall clarity and decent mix. I would commend the taper because I know he had to have battled with the Hammersmith Odeon acoustics, loud audience, louder band, and consumer grade gear and yet still managed a good capture. Brussels Audience 8.9 - This is a strong recording and finds the band performing at a very high level. Good sound balance, and though you get a sense of the sheer volume, it does not stress the tape. Audience 8.8 - I am SO relieved that the sound quality here is good, because for me I do not really collect Tom Petty recordings, I mean I like him fine but I just had way to much other stuff I needed to listen to...BUT if you pointed me to something different, I suppose I would take you up on it and so that is what this is. I must say, it's really interesting! Quality-wise it's really fine, and very immersive (yes, you know you are rubbing shoulders with a boatload of people) but I find it wasn't off-putting at all. Audience 8.7 - No other recordings strikes me the same way this one does. The best way to describe it is...it makes you feel like these sounds have travelled through a worm hole to reach us, having been hurtling through the past, space, time, to get to your ears again now. You hear the atmosphere of ancient Rome, the Pantheon, the theatre, the crowds, the GUITAR...echoing, then landing like a punch in the face. But, there's problems sometimes when travelling through time and space, you don't always come out completely intact as this old tape clearly shows. Does that mean it's bad? Quite contrary! I was mesmerized and listened to the whole thing. It's not great, it's not bad, it's not going to win any contests but it is UNIQUE and a blast to hear. I'm in Rome in 1972 at a Who concert and my seats are on Pete's side of the stage and I am getting my wish to be smothered by the delicious sounds of a Gibson SG in the hands of a maniac genius at full volume. How can you not want to know about this? It is well worth having. Studio Quality 8.6-9.5 - I was not expecting this to be anywhere near this good. I kinda just assumed it would be a collection of 4th gen cassette tape garbled noise. It's far from noisy and garbled, it's actually DAMN good! Maybe two or three tracks out of the lot are a bit less clear and dynamic, but those are the minority here. All in all, this set rocks! Audience 8.6 - A middle of the road tape that starts off rough as taper situates himself (and a rather rude bump occurs in the middle of Welcome To The Jungle) but do smooth out a few minutes in and gradually sounds somewhat better. A large venue sound complete with that telltale "verb" and slightly boomy, but one thing you get plenty of, and this is key, Slash. At the expense of Axl, you get a heaping dose of Slash and that is fine. Quieter numbers and interludes sound way much better than full tilt volume. I suggest exploring this one if you already collect the band's live shows and do not have this one yet - it's good, it's not great, but to the band's credit I have yet to hear them do a subpar performance and this show is pretty darn good. Audience 9.2 - One thing you get from a great audience tape that a soundboard can't reproduce is how the vocals actually sound. What I mean is that when a signal goes directly from mic to board, it's going to be nothing like what the vocalist will sound like to the audience. The PA system translates vocals to the ears the way the band wants it to sound like, and therefore a truer representation of the live sound that you go to a show to get. This tape delivers that and more - atmosphere, and great individual instruments (especially drums), this is really good stuff. Heart St. Paul Civic Center St. Paul, MN 12-05-1987 Disc 1 1. Boston 1973 - Soundboard 9.7 - Professionally recorded for broadcast, as you can expect with a jazz rock combo the sound has to be extraordinary due to the nature of the musicianship and sound they each produce - in other words it is easier to manage the sound when it isn't over distorted and ear-splittingly loud. This is, as a result, a lovely sounding tape (during the quiet sections there is some minor tape noise in the background but it disappears as soon as the music starts). New York 1974 - Audience 9.0 - I had a hard time figuring out whether this was an aud or a soundboard because of the proximity of the vocals. I determined it had to be a semi-professional audience recording because of the crowd responses being pretty well picked up in the tape after songs...if it was a board tape that would not be as audible (if at all). But it could still easily pass as a board tape if you didn't take that into account - so is it a board tape? It is very good for this venue, Carnegie Hall acoustics did not lend themselves well to loud rock music, if this is indeed an audience tape they did a fantastic job! Audience 8.7 - A recording that won't set the night on fire but will provide enough warmth and light to keep you in front of it. I only noticed some issues with how the cymbals sounded, to me it almost sounded like tape hiss - I had to really concentrate to tell what it was at first, but, it does seem to be Keith banging away incessantly as he is known to do. Towards the end of the tape, the cymbal anomaly seems to get worse. It is still a decent old tape. Audience 8.8 - Anytime you get a halfway decent sounding GFR show you grab it, because let's face it these guys were just balls to the wall loud and normal taping gear could not handle it. But, every once in a while you find something...and again it serves to remind just how badass this band was. This is a really good recording considering how mind-numbingly loud it had to be there. Glasgow - Audience 8.7 - A great tape to hear the very beginnings of Ozzy's solo career. and the brilliance of Randy Rhoads. Clear, and decent separation of instruments. Newcastle - Audience 8.5 - Slightly muddy but it has the bones of a good tape recording. I feel like if this old tape was re-mastered with AI tools it would shine. Nothing is buried beyond salvation here, in fact I would say if you just keep listening your ears adjust to the sound and it gets better and better. Audience 8.9 - Quite an interesting tape, the proximity to the stage makes the energy palpable - good mix of both guitars and the amazing tone they had at this time. Audience 8.4 - A distant recording without a lot of dynamics but the audio is clear enough especially vocals and guitar. Low end is not in abundance but the bass notes are audible and distinct which helps this tape become something collectors should want, it is, after all, a 1975 concert and fills that part of the collection. The take-away? A guitar-centric tape, a great show, worthy of the collection but not winning any awards for scintillating dynamics. Soundboard 9.1 - A somewhat dated sounding tape (a touch of hiss, and a very slight amount of distortion on the cymbals during at least the first 20 minutes as the soundman dials it in) but it is a treat to hear these songs in such good quality. My review is subjective, I think it's a fine recording but I have to nitpick seeing as there's a very steady supply of Santana soundboards. Audience 9.8 - Ethereal, intense, clear, atmospheric, and just about as good as your ears can perceive an audio recording to be. The sound mix is just spot on, and each instrument occupying it's own space just allows you to take a minute here and there to focus on whatever instrument you want...but always drawing back to Steve because let's face it he's a total badass. Audience 8.4 - This is not hi-fi by any stretch, but what it represents is a rollicking good time as only this band was capable of doing. In the mix is mostly Ron Wood and Rod Stewart, with a overdriving bass backbone that forces the intensity of the sound volume. It's a full bodied tape, no bones about it. With modern mastering tools, it has been brought under control...somewhat. Hey, I have heard MUCH worse than this, and once the ears settle in to it, what you have is a recording that delivers the fun and electricity of The Faces. Audience 9.6 - Very well done, with loads of beautifully full drums and bass that do not boom and do not drown out any other instrument. Keys are nicely placed in the mix and at times seem to surround you. Excellent and highly recommended! ELP Long Beach Arena Long Beach, CA. August 11, 1977 Disc 1 1. Portland - Audience 9.1 - Excellent, clear, and a nice atmosphere to it. Denver - Soundboard 9.6 - This board tape is expressive, bright (listen to Bob's vocals), and very well mixed (sounds like vocals panned to one side, back up vocals to the other side...interesting!). Audience 8.7 - This is a decent tape that delivers some sense of the venue and the power of the band in a live setting, it's not "relaxed" sounding but definitely hard rock music at volume...but that being said there is some slight harmonic distortion somewhere in the upper mid band range, and if you had to choose where your live recording suffered, it would be here because it doesn't do as much damage to the sound taken as a whole as you might suppose. It's still a really good recording...with limitations. Audience 9.4 - This recording consists of a matrix between both an audience recorded tape and a stand-alone video recorder audio, and together (when both are rolling and in-sync) they have a wonderful stereo pan effect and sweet, clean quality. Illinois 2002 - Audience 9.5 - Superb recording considering how hard it is to properly capture live heavy metal. Normally what you get, even if on good gear, is a well captured loud sound without much separation of instruments...but here you can really wrap your ears around it all pretty distinctly. Columbus 1990 - Audience 9.0 - This is a good recording with a little less fullness and bottom end definition compared to the Illinois set. Still, it's really well done and can benefit from your own "seasoning" so to speak. TROUBLE Penny Road Pub South Barrington, Illinois 2002-05-18 DISC 1 1. Introduction - R.I.P. 2. Montreal - Audience 8.7 - You can tell the tapers gear was of good quality, the capture is actually very clear but in capturing the actual sound at the show you gotta accept whatever is coming out of the PA system, and however the sound guy has mixed it. That being said, I can tolerate this one much more than 90% of all the other Metallica audience tapes which suffer greatly from sheer volume overload most of the time. Missouri - Soundboard 9.1 - Great drums sound believe it or not, and both guitars are distinguishable from one another which makes it very well worth hearing. These two guys can really play, maybe not quite Dave Mustaine level (ok so I am partial to Megadeth) but they can do what they do in very convincing fashion especially when you can actually hear it. Audience 8.8 - This is better than I give it credit for, mainly because it has all the elements needed to be very enjoyable - namely: clarity, separation of instruments, and atmosphere. Where it lacks the necessary qualifications to enter into 9.0 and above rating status is more in the dynamics range (is low end low, is high end high, are mids clear and punchy?) which here are expressed mostly with the lovely, brassy and defined bass sound. This is good! But perhaps we are spoiled now with all the audio riches we have at our disposal. This is a very good old tape, with a re-mastering I assume it would rise to the 9.0 level, but the bones are here. E.L.P Odeon Theatre Birmingham, UK 1972-11-24 Disc 1 01. ABADDONS BOLERO 02. Recorded in 1977 by a group of musicians who brought different perspectives into the equation. Very much an English folk psyche type of record but features a lot of Eastern influence with the introduction of Sitar, and tablas (and other sounds), an ethereal vibe permeates as Moog synthesizers weave in and out of the music. Lots of heavy, mystical vibe on this one.

Sale!Audience 8.7 - This is a good and reasonably clear (some tape hiss) recording which reminds me a lot of the Hamburg 1971 recording. I would not be surprised if this was done by the same guys. As a bonus, there is a third disc containing the film footage of Atom Heart Mother from this show. It should be playable on most players, this disc is formatted as a video disc (compact disc containing an MP4 file), if you have any problems please let us know. It should play fine on your computer, and most DVD machines will know what to do with it.
